With no cap money Saints sign Byrd

I guess they are really putting a lot of eggs in the Victor Butler basket then.

This is a big mistake. I don't think there's a safety in the league I'd give 9 mil a year to, but especially when I'm tight to the cap and don't have my best offensive weapon signed.

Also, IIRC, they built Brees' contract so that he is easier to cut after this year and the next. I think its something along the lines of, if they cut him right after the Super Bowl, they save like 19 or 20 million. He'll be 36 when this season ends...something to consider if they stink. They were the beneficiaries of a cake schedule last year, and weren't a serious contender, imo. With a serious decline this year, against the cap, and being more than a player or two away, I don't think its unrealistic for them to at least consider moving on.

The safety position is probably the most important position on the defense. We've had monster contracts at WR and OL. Where did it take us? What have we not had since the days of a feared defense? What have we been needing for almost two decades??? A safety!!!

Actually, we were a top tier defense when we went 13-3. Not two decades ago. What we've seen wash away since that day was offensive production first. (T.O. getting old, Miles Austin back to mediocre, Barber slowing down after taking a beating, The whole OL got old and injured.) Now that we've put together a competitive offense, the defense got old and beat up and we keep drafting injury prone players to save a few bucks. Hopefully we get some work horses out of this years draft. Not that I disagree with safety help. I just wouldn't call it the "one" thing we haven't had in two decades. We have been on a see-saw. I do miss me some Darren Woodson. What we really haven't had in two decades is smart GM decisions. You don't keep giving guys pushing their 30's or in to their 30's (that are starting to have surgery constantly) big money. I hate being Mr. Optimistic sometimes but, I am seeing some smarter things going on within the organization. At least in my mind. Still dumb stuff? Yes. Just feels like something's shaking.

Can't wait til they can't afford Jimmy Graham beyond the franchise tag this year. Rob Ryan sold Loomis on Byrd like he sold Jerry on our corners, hope it works out the same

if you have people that know what they're doing the NFL salary cap can be easily manipulated

You pay a premium in free agency. This is nothing new, and all teams do it from time to time.

The good teams avoid the horrific contracts like Carr's.

Only to one up that decision by wasting a 1st and 2nd on Claiborne the following month.

You could GM for 10 years and not make two bigger mistakes than that.

I never understood the Claiborne thing. I watched tape and was never thrilled.

From where we were at the CB position at the time? Unlikely. You're wrong re the importance the league places on CBs, too, though it has nothing to do with the premium the Saints payed at S today. Which is, of course, the topic of this particular thread.

it's not like Byrd is a one year wonder. he's a 3 time all pro

The thought that people on this particular board would be dumbfounded by a team signing players with little or no cap space cracks me up.

New Orleans knows that they have to get the job done before Brees goes. They're trying to win before the window closes.

If NO players are worth the price, who cares if we are 100 million under the cap. There is no logic here today...

I wanna win the Super Bowl with an overall team salary maxed out at $85 million so we can show everyone how good Jerry is at GM

They are sure putting a lot of resources into safety. First round draft pick last year and now this. I wonder how much Seattle invested in their safeties.
