I don't know that there's no reason to. He could ensure that he's a top 15 or even possibly a top 10 pick if he ran around a 4.3 flat. Typically only the top 2-3 players in the draft don't show up or sit out of exercises. Players projected toward the middle of the first round usually always show up and run. But given his injury, he has a good excuse.

typically, fast prospects who are being told that they have a good chance to go quite high in the draft won't run at the Combine, esp. on Indy's notoriously slow field

any chance landry or nelson falls to us?
I will never say never again after Witten lasted until the 3rd and Stephen Jackson was there 2 years ago.

Laron Landry is still my number one hope.

I don't know of enough examples of fast players that have opted out of the combine to say that there's a trend. If you can point out several, that'd be helpful.

Reggie Bush and Santonio Holmes didn't run at the Combine last year

Ashley Lelie

There's the case of wide receiver Ashley Lelie's workout last year. Lelie was considered one of the top receivers in the 2002 NFL Draft, but opted not to run at the Combine. Instead, he wanted to run at his Pro Day. The workout starts, Lelie started to run, and he wound up pulling a muscle and that was the end of his Pro Day. He left about 40 guys who wanted to watch him work out with nothing. He was still a first-round pick, though.

Reggie Bush doesn't count. As I stated typically the top couple of players in a draft will sit out because they have nothing to gain.

Santonio Holmes might be a good example. Ashley Lelie...maybe. If you show me something that says Lelie sat out of the Combine because he was afraid to run on the "slow" field. He may have had a muscle pull that was aggravated at his team's Pro Day.

Either way, giving 2 examples hardly shows a trend from which to conclude that Ginn would most likely sit out.

No one ever comes out and says that the slow track (although it was resurfaced and is now much faster) was the reason that they didn't run, they'll always claim a hamstring tweak or such but everyone knew that's what it was.

It's also fairly common for players projected in the first round, especially QBs and speed WRs, to show up at the combine, do the interviews and have their measurements taken but not run or do drills.

A player like Ginn will bulk up for the combine, packing on ten or more pounds, just to step on the scale, then shed the weight for their pro day 40.

I would agree that this is all possible, but I'd like to see a trend of it happening before I would claim that Ginn would likely sit out.

More than a dozen (and that's just who I can think of off the top of my head) first day picks last year didn't do everything last year at the combine.

Could a few have had legitimate medical reasons? Sure, but it's a trend that's been happening for as long as I've been following the draft.

That may change a little now that the track is faster but we'll still see a few who skip the 40.

Out of the 31 receivers that attended in 2006, 30 of them ran the 40. (The guy that didn't run was a 4th rounder).

Santonio Holmes didn't appear at the combine. He had a strange scenario, however, because he was uniformly considered the top WR pick. He basically had nothing to gain from the combine. That's certainly not the case with Ginn.

I will go on record now and say that I believe Ginn will run very, very fast at his Pro Day. He will catch the ball well and he will impress scouts by running very good routes. Having said that, he will not be a top 10 player and may be available to us at 22 because of his injury and inexperience at WR. Ginn was originally recruited by OSU to be a CB. He was moved to WR because of his speed. I don't think he is going to measure in at 6 ft and that too will hurt but he is going to be the fastest WR and maybe player in the draft. He is the best Playmaker in the draft IMO. His ability to return kicks is significant. Ginn is going to be a player in the NFL in my opinion. Somebody is going to be very happy with this kid. Of course, that is only my opinion.

The '06 year was a terrible year at the top for WRs and the only WR who carried a first round grade prior to the combine didn't run. Jackson jumped up boards when he threw up a 4.32.

At least five first rounders didn't take part in everything at the combine, Bush, Lienart, Young, Holmes and Hali, and there's probably a few more if I look it up if you want.

What does Ginn have to gain by running at the combine? He puts up a fast time but it's in the ball park of some of the other WRs and he drops like a rock.

This line of discussion was about mid-round WRs skipping the 40 in the combine.

Bush, Leinart, Young, and Hali have no relevance. I've already stated that several times in this thread.
