Witten needs to retire

So, cutting the receiver with the best hands on the team is the answer to improving the offense? The plays where he stops a yard or two short of the first down is something that you need to take up with the legendary Jason Garrett and his sidekick Linehan as those are designed plays that he runs, it's not like he just gets tired and decides to stop.........here's a secret for ya....this has been this way for about three years now it's nothing new.

The idea that a player either has to always be an elite player or should retire, without there being any level between, is nonsense. The way to improve the position is not for the current best TE to no longer be on the team, but to have the current bottom of the depth chart TE no longer on the team. Find a younger TE to play a significant role, and have Witten as a 2nd TE. We run a lot of 2 TE sets, and Witten still has the best hands on the team and has value as a receiver and blocker, even if less so than in his prime.

I’m ready for Rico to start. We saw flashes of how explosive and dynamic he could be in preseason. We haven’t had a player like that at the TE position in years.

Then u should remove that first part because its a really dumb thing to write

It's not, if you read the entire sentence. It's not my fault you decided to respond to half of what I wrote.

The first part is in there because there are two reasons why a guy should retire: 1. he wants to retire or 2. somebody better takes his job. Both are valid. I didn't think anybody would only read half the sentence and then react to the fragment.

Much less that it would be a dude named 'jwitten82.'

You're misunderstanding his point. He is saying until we get someone to push him out, he is here to stay, and I agree with him. James Hanna isn't going to beat out Jason Witten. Rico Gathers won't beat out Witten when he is on IR. Gavin Escobar won't beat out Jason Witten because he was a huge bust and no longer on the team.
Perhaps, but it seems like the original statement had two criteria. 1) play as long as he wants or 2) have someone who offers more. The first one shouldn't be in any sentence. Second one, I hope you guys understand that some of us think he has already been beaten out if an impartial decision was made about snap counts. Hanna has completely been wasted his entire career as nothing but a blocking TE when he clearly had other skills that could have been utilized if Witten didn't get every route. Rico, who knows what he will or won't become but if he can do half of what we have seen in his limited action, he offers much more.

I do know this. There were games mid to late season last year where Wit was simply outmatched in the blocking assignments. He was late getting where he needed to be & didn't have the oomph to get it done when he got there. The look on his face told me all i needed to know about where he was as a player and that's why it will be a little disappointing if he doesn't acknowledge that in some way. If he is coming back only if he is the TE, its not good for the team.

There are always players that have flashes like that in preseason, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are starting material, or will ever amount to much in the NFL. Preseason is a very small sample of work in a very different situation and often playing both with and against backup players, practice squad players and guys that will be cut.

I'm not saying Gathers can't become a good NFL player, but we are a long way from knowing that right now.

I think a lot of you as a poster but you are thinking with your heart. He is a serious liability. Anyone who can't see that is looking at him with rose colored glasses.

I agree that you should think a lot of me as a poster. I don't agree with the Witten stuff, but I'll let it slide because I like you, too.

I think he's a fairly mediocre player at this point, to be clear. I've got pretty much all of the TEs except for Rico clumped up together pretty close right now, though Witten is still the best player in that group. I'd be all for phasing him out if we really had better options. I'd just rather spend the draft picks on S, DL, or LB or even OL or even WR. But, hey, if Goedert were to slip to the 3rd or 4th somehow....

I just really don’t understand the sentiment across this board that it’s Witten’s duty to retire. Is Witten a #1 TE still? No. But it’s not like he’s embarrassing himself out there either.
It’s not Witten’s fault the FO isn’t competent enough to find a better replacement, nor is it his fault the coaching staff doesn’t have the balls to make him the #2 TE.
These things aren’t issues for real teams run by a real gm and coach.

This offense needs more athletic skill position plays BOTTOM LINE. There is no legit speed on the field at either TE or WR and it ******* shows!!!!!!!!

They need to dump him and move on....

That’s just a lazy assessment. “Other players have looked good in preseason and haven’t been good, so Rico might not be good too.” When I said flashes, I meant every single opportunity presented to him, because that’s what it was. Rico wasn’t the benefactor of blown coverages and poor effort, he was dominating with raw athleticism and out sizing people. Sure, it’s “only preseason”, but it doesn’t take much to see his game will translate well to the regular season and beyond. The question mark has always been his blocking, which is the only real reason we haven’t seen him yet. His floor is a monster receiver, but they need him to be more well rounded than that on our run-first team.

lol - no, it's a realistic assessment. No matter how you cut it, preseason is not the same as regular season, and until a player proves himself in real games, against the starting players on the opposing team, and with the opposing team actually forming a game plan, he hasn't proven himself. Again, I'm not saying he can't be a good NFL player, but there is no way to reasonably act as if he has already proven it.

Nobody’s acting as if Rico’s proven himself. Zeke was unproven too coming out of college but everybody knew he would be a great running back. How could we make that assessment though if he never proved himself against NFL players in the regular season? Because it didn’t take much to see his game would translate well. Rico’s game will translate well. Sure, everything is “yet to be seen”, but you’re just using that as an excuse to be indecisive. He will be a good player, especially once he develops as a blocker.
