Worst call in NFL history Face Mask

Here is a paste from NFL.com:

5 Yard Penalty:

19. Grasping facemask of the ball carrier or quarterback.

15 Yard Penalty:

8. Twisting, turning, or pulling an opponent by the facemask.

Anyone who reads this can be 100% sure the call was correctly determined to be 15 yards. No where is there a tackling or time limit on the rule. That being said, neither team is playing a consistent game right now. There are good reasons why neither team is above .500

What the 'Skins fans aren't getting and some others is that turning the facemask ALONE without the other prerequisites is not enough to call the penalty according to the rules. You actually have to grab and twist in an attempt to tackle and not let go, which did not occur.

That's just silly. Taylors head going sideways is exactly what constitutes the twisting specified in the rules. Yes, it was a brief yank and yes Taylor was barely slowed down. Unfortunately the head going sideways is all it takes for the refs to make that a personal foul call.

It's text book and gets called like that every weekend.

No, the call was wrong, but it doesn't matter.

15 yard facemask my arse!!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

for some reason this team has gone face mask happy. if they'd quit being stupid and committing stupid penalties, then it won't be in the hands of the ref to have to decide.

agreed - don't do either and you don't put yourself in a stupid position.

it's like when people block intersections in traffic and the light changes. when you stare them down they blame the traffic for the delima.

i blame them for putting themselves in a stupid position and hoping on luck to see it through.

if you stop doing stupid things stupid things will quit happening to you as much. pretty simple really.

My understanding of the rule is that if the defensive player's hand touches the facemask or if a finger gets caught in the mask on the way to the ground but the force or momentum of the tackle isn't from the headgear where the hand is caught, its a 5 yarder.

A 15 yard penalty occurs when a player graps the ballcarrier's mask and tackles or attempts to him by the mask, or when a finger or hand in the process of grazing across the facemask becomes stuck or grasps the facemask, even momentarily, and causes the defender's head or neck to twist.

So even though he let go within a second or two of his finger getting caught in the mask, Taylor's head is clearly twisted sharply to the left because of the contact with his mask. The ref's look for that head to twist, if it does and your hand is grasping the mask, or a finger is caught in the mask, its 15 yards. Seemed pretty standard to me.

Oh...I thought this thread was going to be about our HOF fame coach going for a two point conversion.

I'm still flabbergasted over that call ... absolutely floored.

No, it's fifteen if you are agressive with the face mask, tackle or not. That call was a five yarder. Incidental.

I could have sworn that the penalty had did not stem from the severity of the foul, but how sincere it was. Intentionally meant 15 yards, unintention meant 5. It certainly looked intentional, while weak.

Actually, what's silly is all the 'Skins fans defending such an egregious call. If it was against them, everyone in the free world would know they'd be on the opposite end of the spectrum whining about the call.

If you look at the play in regular game speed, it's barely a twist. You could have slapped the guy and his head would have been turned because of the way the player was running.

Davis was slapped with a 15 yard personal foul for not grabbing the facemask or jersey. Yet on the next drive, Barber was pulled down by his helmet in a worse manner than Portis on Davis' personal foul penalty and it was never called.

The refs were clearly one sided in this game and I expected them to be. Just not so egregiously. You have people on this board who complain about people who complain about the refs, now complaining about the refs. That's how atrociously inconsistent the reffing was.

I haven't complained about the call because so many other bad things happened in the game. Mike Golic mentioned on Mike & Mike this morning that he thought it was a questionable call. We will certainly make NFL replay again this week....as the losing team.
