I'll never understand the 90s image of bad music. In my opinion, it's one of the best next to the 60s and 70s. Some of my favorite bands come from the 90s, Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, O.A.R and Umphrey's McGee, to name a few. Not to mention some of the best rap in its existence, with Biggie, 2pac, Dre, Snoop etc. If you're looking for bad music, turn to the 80s. With a few exceptions like Gensis, that music scene was a train wreck.
Well, I hate DMB, but I agree for the most part.

90's stations today don't play any of that stuff, they play all the pop stuff, so the perception is really skewed. The 90's put out a ton of great stuff, especially in hip-hop. VH1 has a pretty awesome documentary/miniseries called "The Tanning of America" about that. Hip hop then was just as important influence as anything from the previous decades.

There was some good music in the 90s. No doubt. There's good music in every decade.

I still love Gangsta's Paradise, btw.

But there are a lot of bad songs that are excruciatingly 90's... Spin Doctors, 2 princes is the epitome of such a song, IMO. I really have it in for that song right now.

Overall, I think the further we get from the 90's the more annoyed I get with the music. I don't know if that's because I'm getting older, or if I'm getting more tired of the songs. But mostly, I think I'm annoyed with the overall tone-- the reminder of spending $17.99 for a single disk, the excessive rebel without a cause aspect, the over serious boy bands. Can't quite pinpoint it.

Every decade has a significant amount of bad music.

I would walk 500 miles... Oh lord lol

That may have been an 80's song. It came out big after Benny and Joon. Or at least that is what I thought.

There was some good music in the 90's. Nirvana, early Snoop, Violent Femes, Greenday, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc., just stay away from pop. Never a big pop fan, most of those bands/singers don't have staying power

Love that song. Like iceberg I am partial to the 60's and 70's music, hated most everything out of the 80's except a few bands specifically later in the 80's. Early 90's rocked mid to late 90's sucked.

Definitely, the 90's is easily one of the best music decades. I was baffled when I saw this thread.

the 90s sold you honestly and gave you crap. there were some good bands to be sure, but the overall feel of the music was just "we're not the 80s".

and NEVER EVER EVER put rap and music in the same sentence. to me anyway. :)

You may not like hip hop, but the 90's was the golden age of hip hop. There was plenty of good bands in the 90's, and that's what I care about. I don't care about the Billboard top 100, Madonna, or any of the garbage that has been mentioned in this thread. However, if you get past the pop there is plenty of very good music in the 90's. I love the 60's and 70's as well, but I also love good 90's music.

Yeah I think the best 90s music came in the early 90s, but there were also some awful songs during that time, too. But you could say that about any time frame.

I can’t think of many songs that I like from the latter part of the decade and into the early 2000s.

Alice in Chains/Mad Season
Kyuss
Soundgarden
Tool
Nirvana

for me anyways

Add Pearl Jam to that list and that's my playlist still today. I like the new AIC but DuVall can't hold a candle to Staley.

Same goes for electronic music like Detroit techno, Chicago house and the British (Detroit inspired) scene.

Overall, I much prefer 90ies music over today's crap. But people in this thread only seem to know about mainstream.
