Articles like this are gonna tear this team apart. You would think the Lions are ready to dump him.

Bly blames Harrington for Mariucci's departure
Tuesday, November 29, 2005
ALLEN PARK -- Detroit Lions cornerback Dre Bly said Monday that head coach Steve Mariucci was fired largely because of the play of quarterback Joey Harrington.

In a radio interview with NFL Network, Bly didn't pull any punches.

"When coaches are fired, there's one person that they look at in that development -- it's the quarterback," Bly told NFL Network. "The quarterback here has been bad, you know, as far as his play, hasn't really gotten the job done, ever since I've been here.''

Harrington, in his fourth year with the Lions, lost his starting job to Jeff Garcia earlier this season only to regain it when Garcia was sidelined because he was still recovering from leg injuries sustained in the preseason.

"At this point, I feel like if Jeff Garcia was healthy from Day One, we'd be in a better situation and this would have never happened. Coach wouldn't be fired," Bly said. "I was really happy when we got him (Garcia, in the off-season) and without Jeff, Joey didn't have anyone to push him.

"Joey's struggled before, he's struggling now. I just feel like if Jeff started, we'd never have to fire coach."

Bly didn't exonerate Mariucci completely, but said he shouldn't have taken so much of the blame.

"There were things he (Mariucci) could have done better,'' Bly said, "(but) it's one guy in particular who I feel is the cause of this whole thing, and that's just how it is.

"I've been frustrated every year I've been here, this year in particular, but it's sad to see Mooch take the fall for what's going on."

Very TO-like statement. Suspend him!

Harrington needs to leave. The Cowboys loved him in the draft, and I remember reading that they would have considered drafting him had he fallen, even though they just got Carter.

Anyway, Harrington needs to go somewhere and sit a couple of years. I'm not against it here, but only if he's cheap and only if he knows that he will not be starting.

i could be the lone wolf here, but i think harrington isn't that bad a qb. so much in detroit just is out of whack right now how could any ONE person be responsible not named millen?

4 1st round picks. 3 wr's and a qb.

no ol? where's the focus on the fundamentals vs. the "glam" positions? i don't know if he'll ever be what people hoped coming out and when drafted, but i don't think he's a total waste at this point either. i'd rather have him as a backup than undrafted FA's.

They have a decent o-line. They went out and signed a top free agent in Damien Woody a couple of years ago.

great center - but if a decent OL then kevin jones should be able to do better. his season is pathetic and i don't hear anyone blaming the rb.

but if the wr's, rb's and qb's are all having issues, i look back to the OL, not just a qb.

The expectations on Harrington were very high right from the get-go. He has struggled, but the bigger issue here may be that the wrong guy was fired. Millen has to take some of the responsibility for the situation. As for Bly's comments, he's done himself and his team no favours. Harrington will likely need to go to a situation where it doesn't rest on his shoulders, but Bly may need to go as well. He's set himself up for trouble regardless of the outcome. I can see Harrington in a place like Tennessee or KC to learn the game more completely. I'm not sure he'd fit in Dallas, as the QB position is the ultimate mind game in the cowboy's organization.

Correction. Larry Lacewell loved Harrington.

Which is one of the reasons we are very fortunate he is no longer a major part of our draft process.

I think we have our own version of Joey Harrington, sitting and watching as a 3rd QB.

A year or two ago, I really liked the kid, but he just does not get it, kinda like Henson.

I think he has all the talent in the world but the WCO isn't for him. Didn't oregon use the chuck and duck aka run and shoot?

Harrington's no Carter, but I'd take him over Bledsoe's backups anyday. In fact, I'd take Carter back as our starter and make Harrington his backup and dump the rest. We'll be lucky to make the playoffs with Bledsoe, despite his qb rating. Whatever good he's done so far, we know he'll only get worse with age and continue to make bad decisions. It's his history. Time to liven this board up today. Ha. Ha. Ha.

No way. Absolutely not. He is terrible. His confidence is shot, plus I have to hear about him on the radio every day.

I think we have a very good reason to not want Harrington based off the above endorsement.

Their oline is horrible, one good FA center doesnt make a good line. They have been drafting horrible, and I am sure Millen is the one making the choices. he should be fired for drafting 3 wr's in a row. I have no idea what Ford is doing with that team, but if it wasnt in bad enough shape already, he is driving the Lions team and reputation down into the dirt. I just dont see how Millen can still be standing after such pathetic years.

Harrington reminds me so much of Steve Young years ago. Yes, I would definatly take Harrington if the financial situation were correct. I would not give him a huge contract but I would probably give him a respectable one. He's definatly better then either Romo or Henson right now. I also don't think he needs to sit a couple of years. He would probably have to if he came to Dallas but he's a guy, IMO, that would be able to step in and start for you if Bledsoe went down. I would be very interested in signing a guy like that to back up Bledsoe if he were interested in doing something like that.

Remember, the same type of things were being said about Drew Brees, Jake Delhomme etc. Heck, I remember the same things being said about Trent Green and countless others. Joey Harrington is only in his fourth season and I would say that he's never been in a situation, his entire pro career, where you can honestly say he's had good coaching and good supporting cast. I would take this guy if the money could be worked out.

I think Bledsoe needs somebody to wash his car and mow the lawn while he's playing away games. Joey could use the money.
