Would McFadden accept being PUP'd?

I read that maybe the best thing for the team is to put McFadden on the PUP for the first six weeks, keep all our 4 other RBs on the final 53, and then have McFadden fresh for last 10 games if we need him (if not, trade or cut him then). Would McFadden view this as a slap in the face? If he's healthy for week 1, would players union even allow? Not sure, but the thought of having a rested 1000 yard rusher in the bullpen is appealing.

Eatman claimed a week ago that he was 2 weeks away. So if he's ready, I don't see it.

What's more do you see the Cowboys paying him his salary? Since he broke his elbow on his own and it's NFI, they are not obligated to pay it. He counts 2 million against the cap and only 100K is dead money if he's traded or released.

It's not up to him. He is 5th RB in the depth chart, maybe he should stay healthy then maybe it wouldn't matter......he is also the only running back that don't fit the zone blocking scheme we have

With our backs I'm not worried about not having Mcfadden in the roster

I'd give McFadden a little more respect, he took a back up role last year behind Randle, and when it was time to start, he did what he was supposed to. If he's healthy, and wants to play, we should either play him, trade him, or release him so he can find work elsewhere. The patriots need rbs back.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Accept?

Is it like he has a choice in the matter?

He is the imbecile who broke his elbow in a non-football activity in the offseason.

Don't believe he can go on PUP. He's on the NFI list. In order to go on PUP for the regular season, he would have had to be put on the preseason PUP list.

Here's dem rules:

A player who finishes the preseason still on the PUP list can then be placed on the regular-season PUP list. Such players must sit out the first six weeks of the regular season. At that point, teams have a five-week window in which to allow the player to begin practicing; from the day the player begins practicing, teams have an additional 21-day window in which to decide whether to activate the player to the 53-man roster. If either of those deadlines pass, the player must remain on the PUP list for the remainder of the season.[1]

Non-football injury
A similar list, known as the "non-football injury" (NFI) list, is functionally equivalent to PUP, but is used for players who are unable to practice as a result of conditions unrelated to football. For example, New England Patriots tackle Marcus Cannon began his rookie season on the NFI list as he recovered from chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Also, David Quessenberry of the Houston Texans was put on the NFI list in mid-June, 2014 after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of 23.

The NFI designation, despite its name, also covers injuries sustained during football played outside the NFL, including college football. Willis McGahee spent his entire rookie season on the Buffalo Bills' NFI list due to the major knee injury he sustained in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl.

NFI is virtually the same thing different title for non team injuries.

I think it's already been discussed with the player. I'm just not sure which list he's allowed to be on.

EDIT: Just saw the explanation above

The correct answer has already been said... it's not up to him. A stupid none football related injury has him at a disadvantage to say anything about how they decide to keep him on the team.

most of the DC.com guys are now sayin they think we'll keep him on NFI, to hold onto his rights just in case someone gets hurt in the first 6 weeks....Mick even added it can be stretched to 9 weeks (or games?)....If McFadden wants to get butthurt about it, who cares?

Pretty sure they can't keep him on either list if he is healthy and he wants off

I'm not sure if they can keep him on there if he's healthy, even if he agrees to be on there. You can't just say a guy is injured and stash him away,,, can you?

He was on their legitimately so they can keep him on it to finish rehab if he needs it and wants to be on it. But that was the OPs question, would he want to be on it.

The operative phrase being "if he needs it". I'd be surprised if a team is allowed to keep a player on PUP if he isn't still legitimately injured.

isnt it once the season starts and your on one of them lists, you have to stay on it for the alloted time? like once that designation is official, he could be "ready to go" one day into it, but still have to sit out 6 weeks or whatever.....

And they originally claimed he would be back around the middle of August and Eatman claimed a week ago that he needed a couple more weeks. So that doesn't sound like he will need it. But it's also possible (just kind of unbelievable) that a player and team could agree to keep him on it -- and that has been speculated not only by fans but by the teams media people. Once the player is legitimately on the NFI, I seriously doubt the nfl cares if a team milks it. But both the player in my opinion and the team have reasons not to do it. The Cowboys shoudn't want to pay his salary and keep his cap hit and he should want to be paid and play for a team, even if it's with another.

yes, if they can keep him on until the season starts then he has to miss 6 weeks......but I think the NFLPA would file a grievance if he is healthy....a broken bone is pretty easy to prove that it healed

I read that if DAL keeps JSmith on the NFI for the year then it is considered a 'medical redshirt' and he doesn't accrue a season......DAL would still have him for 4 more years...but if they go that way then they 100% can't activate him this year
