Send Ron Leary + 2017 3rd round pick to Seattle for Michael Bennett

The Cowboys planned to be without Randy Gregory for four games, but now that will be at least 10, and possibly 14, after he has failed an additional drug test(s). Gregory may return this season, but knowing his history it would be insane for the Cowboys to treat his presence, in 2016 or beyond, as anything other than a bonus. The club needs a starting defensive end.

The best free agent on the market is Dwight Freeney, but at 36, Freeney is a situational rusher, though one that would still make a ton of sense. If Dallas wants more, they should make inquiries as to the availability of Seattle’s Michael Bennett.

Bennett is unhappy with his current contract which he signed two years ago. The deal pays him a little over $7 million a year over four seasons, and ranks him 10th among 4-3 DE and 20th among edge rushers in the league. Bennett led all DEs in pass rush productivity in 2015 (combined sacks, QB hits, QB pressures) though, and is well-regarded as having one of the best skillsets for the position.

Not only would the Cowboys have to give up collateral for Bennett, but he would obviously require a new deal. Already at age 30, it would be difficult to see Dallas giving Bennett anything beyond a three-year deal (adding one to his current two years remaining) if they did acquire him. Would Dallas be willing to give up assets and still give a three-year $33 million deal?

If so, Seattle has a dire need for offensive linemen as they have one of the worst units in the league. Dallas could offer their disgruntled lineman Ron Leary, and the inclusion of a third-round pick might entice the Seahawks to make the move...

Robbing Peter to pay Paul works sometimes, but in this the Cowboys are risking there overall strength as a team, while delaying (if not stunting) the growth of their youth, and losing a valuable 3rd round pick for a player on the cusp of age-induced decline.

No thanks.

That's an interesting trade. He probably has three seasons in him. He and Freeney make a lot of sense to me at this point. I'd sign Freeney yesterday. I'd hate to loose Leary but trading him makes sense since he's not the swing interior lineman. Right now for better or worse I think I read Looney is. The OL is strong enough to carry at least one less talented interior lineman esp at G if one of the starters goes down.

We could use some talent and some veteran experience on the DL.

Just go sign Freeney and look again in the draft next year.

Don't give a 30 year old a big contract like that.

In fact Bennett should be happy about that contract.

They need to look in FA next year and the draft. Romo only has 2 left after this one fails to be a sb year. Drafting a DE isn't going to help the next 2 seasons.

Something about him makes me dislike him.. Just seems arrogant and untrustworthy IMO

Would not trade for him, for all the reasons people have already stated. However, this Bennett is far from arrogant and untrustworthy. Is he a character ? Yes.
He spends the offseason in Oahu, married to a local Hawaiian girl. And he gives back to the community alot. He runs free football clinics for kids every year, and donates his time and money to helping in his adopted community. He just recently called out Steph Curry, who came to the Islands and held a basketball camp for the kids.
And charged $2,200 for each kid to attend !!!
Bennett called him out for it, as a millionaire coming here and charging local kids that much. CURRY said, then tell them to go to my brothers camp.
Thats an arrogant piece of **** !
(Still dont want us to trade for him, but i think hes a good dude).

Dude hates the Cowboys and no I have no interest in him at all. Give me Freeney on a 1 year deal and let him split reps with Mayowa, Russell and Irving then go into the draft with the future at DE in mind

Id give up Leary amd a 5th. A 30 year old on sizeable deal doesnt have enough value for me to part with a 3rd rounder

Leary is valuable depth and plays at a pro bowl level. The only way I trade him is in a lopsided trade that's in our favor.

One of the best aspects of signing Freeney, besides being just what the doctor ordered on 3rd down, is that he is a consummate professional that will give these young guys someone to emulate. A 'ole wily veteran who has seen it all. We need one of those on that side of the ball.

I think there's a reasonable chance that a deal like this bears the probabilities of being equally as unfortunate as fortunate. To be sure, this team needs to develop its youngsters just about as desperately as it needs to fortify its DL. I'd prefer to keep Leary and be assured of having a capable backup at OG if and when an injury occurs.

We have several youngsters in house that I believe offer legitimate potential at DT to get the job done. Honestly, Freeney appeals to me more than Bennett, anyhow. Be that as it may, if the Dallas brass elected to make a deal for Bennett, I suppose I could live with that as well but not for 7 million bucks -- that's just too much.
