That'd be a pretty even trade, considering it would probably required us to give him an extension.

Sign Dwight Freeney and if he can't play anymore you cut him, but Catch is right - DE is a draft priority.

Send Ron Leary + 2017 3rd round pick to Seattle for Michael Bennett

The Cowboys planned to be without Randy Gregory for four games, but now that will be at least 10, and possibly 14, after he has failed an additional drug test(s). Gregory may return this season, but knowing his history it would be insane for the Cowboys to treat his presence, in 2016 or beyond, as anything other than a bonus. The club needs a starting defensive end.

The best free agent on the market is Dwight Freeney, but at 36, Freeney is a situational rusher, though one that would still make a ton of sense. If Dallas wants more, they should make inquiries as to the availability of Seattle’s Michael Bennett.

Bennett is unhappy with his current contract which he signed two years ago. The deal pays him a little over $7 million a year over four seasons, and ranks him 10th among 4-3 DE and 20th among edge rushers in the league. Bennett led all DEs in pass rush productivity in 2015 (combined sacks, QB hits, QB pressures) though, and is well-regarded as having one of the best skillsets for the position.

Not only would the Cowboys have to give up collateral for Bennett, but he would obviously require a new deal. Already at age 30, it would be difficult to see Dallas giving Bennett anything beyond a three-year deal (adding one to his current two years remaining) if they did acquire him. Would Dallas be willing to give up assets and still give a three-year $33 million deal?

If so, Seattle has a dire need for offensive linemen as they have one of the worst units in the league. Dallas could offer their disgruntled lineman Ron Leary, and the inclusion of a third-round pick might entice the Seahawks to make the move...

Firstly, I'd try not to get my hopes up, because I think there's no way that Seattle would part with him.

Secondly, if they would take this deal, I'd make it in a heartbeat. Bennett is one of the best 'disrupters' in the entire NFL. He wreaks havoc in multiple ways, from multiple positions, and his impact on the game is worth a 3-year, $30 million contract.

He's vastly underpaid for what he brings to the table in my opinion, and I'd be upset with that contract too, especially after seeing what Olivier Vernon is getting!

While he's a bit if a screwball like his brother, he gets the job done on the field. But if I can work out a deal, I'd do it and not think twice.

I think there's a reasonable chance that a deal like this bears the probabilities of being equally as unfortunate as fortunate. To be sure, this team needs to develop its youngsters just about as desperately as it needs to fortify its DL. I'd prefer to keep Leary and be assured of having a capable backup at OG if and when an injury occurs.

You have Leary for this season, that's it. After that, he's gone, with zero chance of coming back. And you would be trading a backup who may never play at all for a guaranteed starter and the best defensive lineman on your team.

We have several youngsters in house that I believe offer legitimate potential at DT to get the job done. Honestly, Freeney appeals to me more than Bennett, anyhow. Be that as it may, if the Dallas brass elected to make a deal for Bennett, I suppose I could live with that as well but not for 7 million bucks -- that's just too much.

Seriously? Check out what the Giants just paid Olivier Vernon and then let me know how you feel.

If a trade was going to happen then it should have happened by now. Roll with the guys that show up to training camp.

POINT MUGU, Calif. - Despite pressing pass-rush needs, the Dallas Cowboys aren't actively pursuing a trade for reserve left guard Ron Leary as the club prepares for their first training camp practice Saturday, sources said.

Unlike linebacker Rolando McClain, Leary accompanied his teammates on the flight to Point Mugu Naval Base on Thursday as the Cowboys arrived for the start of training camp.

Leary was a no-show for the Cowboys' voluntary offseason practices in hopes of facilitating a trade to a team that would give him the chance to start again. Leary, however, did attend the Cowboys' mandatory three-day minicamp in mid-June.

The Cowboys view Leary as a valuable asset to their talented offensive line and are comfortable with him on their 53-man roster to start the season. They feel he will push second-year left guard La'el Collins in training camp and at the very least provide the club with an insurance policy if a starter were to get injured before the season.

The Cowboys are willing to listen to offers for Leary but would have to be blown away by a deal to trade him away...

One of the best aspects of signing Freeney, besides being just what the doctor ordered on 3rd down, is that he is a consummate professional that will give these young guys someone to emulate. A 'ole wily veteran who has seen it all. We need one of those on that side of the ball.

I'm thinking Freeney already has an agreement to sign with Arizona and he just hasn't signed because he wants to skip training camp.

I can't imagine Dallas or some other team wouldn't have him on their roster right now unless he's told teams he doesn't want to practice.

My preference would be to keep Leary for this year as I previously stated. Bennett's not in Vernon's class nor worth 7 mil, imho. I'm betting the Dallas brass won't feel any differently, what with their newfound cap-spending policies in effect. I like Leary as a backup, though, let's make no mistake. My first option would be to keep him in tow. I believe there's a good chance he'll fill in for someone on our OL before the year is over. Realistically, I'd say there's about a one in ten chance that we might outbid the other teams that are considering Bennett anyway but we'll see.

Also, if something happens to a tackle as well, it may be necessary for Leary to take up a guard spot and say, Martin to kick out to tackle...if Green doesn't own up shortly.

The 3rd and Leary is a little rich for me, considering Leary is a bona fide walk in pretty darn good guard.

But you are right Bennett is a flat out stud! People on here must have not watched much of Seattle or something, because he is amazing. He is easily top 10 disruptor in the NFL today.

Absolutely. That's another aspect of the situation that could easily develop as the season progresses. OL injuries are extremely commonplace.

We good again? This is going to be too good of a season, to watch, for lingering misunderstandings...:)

Of course, CC -- in my mind, we were never at odds to begin with. The only thing that lingers on my part is respect.

My first inclination is to say "HELL YEAH!"

But logic and reason applied, I'm not sure I want another foray into the psychedelic mind warps of the crazy Bennett escapade.

They must have been raised on a mayonnaise farm or something. Strange.
