Would you consider this band "talented"?

Are you from the D/FW area? I grew up there and the radio station 97.1 KEGL The Eagle got on a kick where every 3rd song was Rush back in I believe the late 90s or early 2000s. Basically, they ruined Rush for me. I heard them so much that I grew so sick of hearing them and specifically Geddy Lee's voice. Now, I immediately change the station if I hear them come on.

It's basically like listening to Stairway to Heaven. I absolutely love Led Zeppelin, but if Stairway comes on. I change the station. The last time I listened to Stairway to Heaven all the way through is when Stevie Nicks performed it at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The only difference is, it's every song with Rush. Not just one.

No I'm not from Texas. Geddy does have an usual voice. You either like it or hate it I guess but he's a great musician.

There is a VH1 special on Rush that plays all the time. That's sort of my education on Rush. I don't have any of their CD's.

I kinda like the fact it's been those 3 guys for decades now and Geddy said if one left they'd all quit.

The songs of theirs I hear on satellite radio I like..their "hits" I guess you could say..but I cannot stand long 10 minutes songs from any band and I know they are known for having some VERY long songs. I'm just not into that.

Aren't Rush or U2 considered the best live bands? Rush in particular..

I don't like Muse.

Coincidentally, Muse didn't get popular in the states until they toured with U2 a couple years ago.

As far as the UK (where I'm from) and the rest of Europe? Muse has been an insanely popular band since 2004, becoming the first band to ever sell out Wembley Stadium in 2007 (my first concert).

Are you sure that 4 octaves is an impressive range? If his range is 4 octaves I don't believe that's huge. My daughter sings and isn't renowned for her range and I asked her what her range was and she said it was likely 4 or so. I know that there are people out there with a reported 7 octave range.

Maybe you got the number wrong, but if it really is 4 that's fairly mundane for someone who's a professional. The one caveat is that my daughter sings classical and opera, so that's what I'm referencing, and it's possible that in pop music 4 is less ordinary.

For comparison, Freddy Mercury had a four octave vocal range.

I think Chris Cornell has a cooler multi octave range voice, but I can see why this guy is popular with some.

Muse seems pretty talented, but there's something about them that seems somewhat canned.
That would play to masses in a big way in some markets...as it has.

Muse is about as talented as it gets.

But their style is so abrupt I can see how people don't like them.

I'm not a big fan of today's music. I find a lot of today's artists sound alike and their voices are quite bland.

That said....I like Muse and Coldplay. I love this song:

Music is like beauty it is int he eye of the beholder. Not fan of the Stones, The Who, Springsteen, the beatles. Yes I like Nickelback, Billy Joel, 80's Bon Jovi, The Eagles, Muse, I likes Old Linkin Park, Chevelle, Staind. I am sure many will take issue with my likes and dislikes.

I'm in my 20's and I LOVE the Beatles! To me their music is timeless. I listen to something by them or Paul every single day. WIthout fail.

The beatles have some good songs but beyond that I do not think they are anything special. I consider them the original boy band.

Oh my...so far from that....their songs are exceptional.
They were creative I guess, but in terms of actual talent, they're nowhere near the top. There are tons of bands, including Muse, who are more technically talented than the Beatles.

Freddy Mercury had a great voice.

When you get right down to it though, voice is the last thing singers really need. Fantastic voices are a dime a dozen, but the most popular bands and singers rarely have great voices.

Lady Gaga is a supremely talented singer, but you'd never know it if you listened to her most popular songs. She wasn't making money really singing, but she made about a billion dollars from that dumb assed 'Poker Face' tripe.

Talent takes a back seat to presentation and catchiness almost every time.

Hence why we have Miley Cyrus.

Boy band?
While their first few albums were mostly pop radio friendly fluff everything from Rubber Soul afterwards was exceptional and showed that the band had grown not only as individuals but as a band. Rubber Soul, Sgt Peppers and Abbey Road all make the "greatest rock albums of all time list and puts them up in stellar company{Pink, Floyd, Zeppelin, Stones} without question.
40 plus years after their demise as a band and they still sell albums and get tremendous airplay. Can we say the same for Muse 40 years down the road.......I think not.:hammer:
