Ellis is younger, cheaper and had more sacks last year than Taylor. Why would I want to trade him AND a former first rounder that may see more time this year?

why, huh?

because ellis is a situational player with two serious leg injuries in his career who is, after all, only 11 months younger than taylor.

because ellis's numbers have been declining each year since 2005, and because there is no guarantee that his only improvement -- last year's 12.5 sacks -- will continue this season.

(and because that former first-rounder can barely even get on the field for special teams duty.)

because ellis has missed 10 games in the past two seasons while taylor hasn't missed a game since 1997.

because taylor has registered almost twice as many sacks in his career as ellis has.

because last year was the first time ellis totalled double-digit sacks, while taylor has had 6 double-digit sacks seasons, including the last 3.

because taylor averages 10 or 11 more tackles over the course of a season than ellis does.

because taylor has twice as many forced fumbles as ellis and 75% more passes defensed than ellis.

because when it comes to PLAYS -- tackles, sacks, passes defensed, forced fumbles and interceptions -- taylor outscores ellis 903 to 605.

...other than that, though, no reason.

You don't think part of the trade would hinge on Taylor renegotiating his contract? I would trade Ellis for Taylor in a heartbeat, and the cowboys would be crazy not to. Ellis is solid, Taylor is an elite player. If Taylor wants out of Miami, he's going to be willing to take a salary cut.

Really. How good is Taylor in coverage? At least Ellis has learned this duty. I don't think Taylor has. Yes, I know Saban installed the 3-4 but it didn't stick and I don't think he learned that skill anyways as his responsibility was always rush the qb.

wouldn't you be willing to trade greg ellis and bobby carpenter for jason taylor?

no, I wouldnt

Ellis is a proven player in our system and there's no question he wants to play football and win...you cant say that about Taylor anymore...Ellis is also a huge bargain on the salary cap...Ellis was excellent last yr, and now he's even further out from the achilles injury he had in 2006, so odds are he will be at least as good, if not better this yr...

and we already refused to trade Carpenter to the Fish, no reason to think they've changed their minds (Ayodele got traded instead)

Why?

You have Ellis who is performing at a very high level, why would you give a two for one? Especially when Taylor makes a hell of a lot of money!

We did? I don't think that had anything to do with not wanting to trade Carpenter. It had more to do with the fact that Ayodele made more sense salary cap wise. I believe he cleared a half million off the cap, while Carpenter would have actually added to the cap this season. (if I remember correctly)

Reportedly the Fins asked for Carpenter initially, and the Cowboys said no, that they could have Ayodele

I don't see how someone who wants to be remembered for something beyond football equates in any way to his level of play on the field. It's a good change to see someone who has the intelligence and goals to see beyond a game that ends before the age of 40. Jason Taylor wanting to act and be remembered for it in no way doesn't make him one of the most talented AND productive pass rushers in the game.

As for the cost, that just wouldn't be true. Taylor will take a paycut.

The reports said we wanted to trade Fasano and then we threw Ayodele in there as well but that they had asked for Carpenter specifically (I would assume they would have upped to pick, maybe all the way to a 3rd rounder! Yay!) and we turned that down.

its fair game to criticize him for it here, you have to wonder how committed the guy is to the game

did he tell you this in a private conversation or something?

No way!. We gave up too much to the Dolphins for a 4th round pick. If they want a 6th rounder, sure. We can throw Taylor into the DE position as the Giants have proven (as the eagles are copying), you can never have enough pass rushers. They make the secondary, not the other way around.

I think Taylor would be willing to accept a situational role and may provide some leadership as well.

he wasn't saying that he didn't care about his football career, or that he didn't want to be remembered for it. but he wants to get into acting, and be good enough at it to still be doing it 10 years from now. so, yes, 10 yearsfrom now, he'd like to better known for what he's doing THEN than what he (would have) done 10 years earlier.

it's not what you're making it out to be.

there are athletes who "act" and suck at it, so even when they're acting they're still considered athletes who are trying to act. he doesn't want to be one of those guys.

let it go.

I think your outta your mind. We got a 4th for a probable 3rd string TE and a guy we were gonna release anyway...we robbed them IMO

If they want a 6th rounder, sure.

can we also trade Sam Hurd for Roy Williams or Chad Johnson? Same kind of fantasy IMO

i disagree. I guess we will see how the player turns out, right? Anyway, would gladly take Jason Taylor for 6th round pick and if he takes less $$

I guess we'll just have to see it play out. My bet (which I am willing to make) is that whatever team Jason Taylor ends up playing for in the fall, it will be on a contract different from the one he has now, and it will be for signficantly less annually.
