Would you rather be mediocre or just plain bad?

8-8 is the worst situation of a football team...................you are not good enough to beat anybody that is good, but you are too good to get any high draft picks that will pay dividends in the future.

Take San Fran for example. They just flat out sucked for a while and were able to use high draft picks to rebuild their roster and now they are reaping the rewards of that. If San Fran had gone 8-8 every season, not only would they have not had the high picks to rebuild with, but their loser coaches (like Singletary) would have stayed on claiming there were just right there and the owner would have never made a move for Harbough.

We are the opposite of that situation. We are not bad enough for any high draft picks that would make a difference and being 8-8 every year has convinced Jerry that his loser coach Opie is just right there.

Like others have said, it is going to take the wheels coming off this thing for Jerry to make meaningful changes and maybe we only get 2 or 3 wins a year for a while, but you are rebuilding your roster during that time to be a great team later on. This 500 crap season after season after season is not accomplishing anything.

I like this post, but what I don't like is for posters to say that tanking a season will give the team a better chance for the future because of higher draft picks. This team is loaded with talent, something else is fundamentally wrong. And, I think it is the Star on the helmet that the players wear, thinking, "we are the Dallas Cowboys, fear us".

The culture of this team is missing what it is about by representing the Dallas Cowboys.

I'll take bad.

At least I know with 7 top 5 picks in each round we could turn it around in one season. Well that and the new coaching staff that is. ;)

For those fans who think that losing seasons = higher drafts picks = success to come, here's a reality check:

The Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills have been bad teams for a very, very long time.

How much good did all of those high draft picks do for them?

Obviously you have to draft well, so of course nothing is guaranteed. However, my point is that at least you have an opportunity to significantly increase your talent level with high picks compared to low picks.

Most fans would agree that the Herschal Walker trade really set up our SB wins because of all those draft picks we got. Now if we took a bunch of scrubs with those picks, then of course it would not have mattered so you do have to draft well with those high picks.

Thinking this team is loaded with talent is another fundamental Jerry Jones fallacy.

We have good players in certain positions, but the coaches do not get the best effort from them and the schemes are a mess on both sides of the football. 8-8 and a handful of missed plays is all that is needed to continue the cycle at Valley Ranch.

A combination of two things - not enough good players at certain positions (safety and pass rusher, for instance,) - combined with poor coaching - has created a mediocre team.

I agree with this...............we have a couple of star players mixed in with scrubs.................couple that with terrible coaching..................you get 500 every season.

A good safety and additional good pass rusher might have made the difference in two games this year - could be 7-3 instead. Good coaching might have even won more games. But oh well.

If there was a New GM there could actually be a Coaching Staff.

Spew it from your mouth, take a cold 1-15 over the lukewarm 8-8...at least you get a hot Draft.

I would rather be "mediocre". "Mediocre" teams gotten hot in the past and won a Super Bowl, despite being 9-7. I'd rather have a chance to win a super bowl, then not have one at all. That's just me though.

We had a losing record in 2010 and got nothing out of it other than a patsy unqualified coach.

Being bad for no-gain means nothing, but a couple of losing seasons would be welcomed if we were doing so with a visionary rebuilding-minded coach while trading vets for future picks and taking cap hits in the near term by cutting expensive over-the-hill players. Jerry is incapable of supporting a re-build like that.

I've thought about this off and on. It's sad that it's got to this point, but I truly believe the only real way to permanently "fix" the Cowboys is for the team to completely bottom out for multiple seasons without any real improvement. If it got bad enough, it might be enough to shame the Jones family into stepping back.

I'm talking like 3 or 4 wins a season for five straight seasons while blowing the resulting high draft pick every year. Jones' ego is so big that it would take that type of catastrophe for him to step back.

Painful, but really the only true way forward, IMO.

We've had no chance in the Jerry puppet coach era excluding Jimmy and Bill so your hope every season outside of that has been misguided.

Everyone living outside the Cowboys BOX knows the problem is Jerry "Puppet Master" Jones and with the mentality that comes with it for 18 years and counting an 8-8 Draft isn't going to be able to overcome his death grip on the throat of this once great and respected Franchise.

At least bad can get people fired. Top draft picks are good too. Would love to be Colts bad for a season or 2 just to nuke this team.

Maybe in your mind we've had no chance, but the last couple years have down to week 17 win and you're in. I don't know about you, but to me that's still a chance.
