Would you rather be mediocre or just plain bad?

I think many of us agree this team is good enough to get another 8 and 8 record. Maybe. I wouldn't be surprised by 7 and 9 either. In any event, we're mediocre as opposed to just plain bad. We're not going 1 and 15 like in '89, and it's unlikely we'll go 5 and 11 like in the Campo years (though not impossible -- scary thought).
So anyway, that begs the question. Are you glad we're not exactly horrible? Someone posted in another thread that we're 15th in the power rankings. That sounds about right; we're middle of the pack. We're not the worst, but we're a long way from the best. We're smack dab in the middle of that bell curve. Is that any consolation that there are a bunch of teams worse than us? Or would it be better to just get it over with and to suck so that we get high draft picks? I know in school at C sucks, but beats the pants off an F.

Does it even matter? We did get to celebrate 8 wins last season, and 5 so far this season. Is it a glass half full situation that we're not the worst or is it just a "**** it" situation where anything other than being championship calibre team blows? I put the question out there.

As someone who lived in upstate New York for a while - lots of Buffalo Bills fans - let me tell you, it is indeed worse for your team to be bad than just merely mediocre.

At least when your team is an 8-8 team, you still have football to look forward to in December. You can legitimately say that there are important games in December for your team to play. Sure, the outcomes of those games are frequently disappointing, but at least they were relevant and important games to watch.


Do you know what it's like to have your season essentially be over by October, almost each and every year? To know that November and December is pretty much meaningless?

Many Cowboys fans here may say with bravado that "I'd rather my team go 3-13 and not give me false hope than go 8-8 and break my heart every December."

I'm sure that if or when such a 3-13 season happened, they'd all suddenly be talking differently instead.

Im not sure if you have been paying attention to the Dallas Cowboys since 1995, but THIS IS OUR REALITY.

As Cowboys fans, we have been fortunate for 7 out of the last 8 seasons. In what sense, you ask? In the sense that the Cowboys were at least always in contention for a playoff berth in all of those seasons late in November and December, except for 2010.

2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012. In all of these seasons, all 16 of the Cowboys' regular-season games were meaningful - except perhaps the 2007 season finale, but that's because the Cowboys had already sewn up homefield advantage; perhaps the best possible reason for your season finale to not be meaningful.


In 2010, Cowboys fans got a taste of what it's like for a December to NOT be meaningful in playoff terms. And I think we can all agree, it was really boring?

The biggest obstacle this franchise has faced over the past decade is Jerry getting his hopes up over minor victories. This team has never bottomed out like it did during the Campo era so Jerry is compelled to think success if always right around the corner.

However, I too like playing meaningful games in December. You must admit it's a sad of affairs when success is measured in how late in the regular season you're eliminated from the playoffs.

8-8 is the worst situation of a football team...................you are not good enough to beat anybody that is good, but you are too good to get any high draft picks that will pay dividends in the future.

Take San Fran for example. They just flat out sucked for a while and were able to use high draft picks to rebuild their roster and now they are reaping the rewards of that. If San Fran had gone 8-8 every season, not only would they have not had the high picks to rebuild with, but their loser coaches (like Singletary) would have stayed on claiming there were just right there and the owner would have never made a move for Harbough.

We are the opposite of that situation. We are not bad enough for any high draft picks that would make a difference and being 8-8 every year has convinced Jerry that his loser coach Opie is just right there.

Like others have said, it is going to take the wheels coming off this thing for Jerry to make meaningful changes and maybe we only get 2 or 3 wins a year for a while, but you are rebuilding your roster during that time to be a great team later on. This 500 crap season after season after season is not accomplishing anything.

Contention for a playoff birth is something to be happy about? This franchise has fallen so, so far.

Is it really THAT interesting watching this team blow it late in the season?

Exactly. Jerry is out of his mind so he goes back and picks a handful of plays and convinces himself that if the team had those plays back that this is an 11 or 12 win team so the status quo of mediocrity continues.
