Twitter: Would you rather have Clowney or Miller

I'm OK with not keeping Sam Williams. I just think we've seen what he brings, and it's not a lot.
I still remember the Sam Williams in Quinn’s defense. Sure, he’d have his mental blunders, but he also flashed.

I’m optimistic that the new staff can help get the good traits out of him.

I do hope to see improvement from Eze and Lawrence can hit the ground running, even though the odds are against great things as a rookie. I liked what I saw from Eze against the run last year and think that he will be out there opposite of Gary when we are in our 3-4 sets. Depending on the down and distance, I expect Gary to play inside in clear passing situations, which means we need someone to be disruptive off the edge. Maybe Eze can, maybe Lawrence can, maybe Houston can. I believe Miller certainly can.
I expect improvement across the board.

For every play Sam Williams made, there was a bonehead play or penalty. Frankly I want him gone.

I would take Clowney. I think Miller is just about done, but look at their stats from last season.

In 13 games, Clowney had 8.5 sacks, 41 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 10 QB hits.
In 17 games, Miller had 9 sacks, 26 tackles, 6 tackles for loss and 15 QB Hits.

I think at this point in their careers, Clowney plays a better all around game. Miller is 37. Clowney is 33.

in todays NFL what is a situational pass rusher? If we are ahead by a touchdown or less with 2 minutes to go how effective is a guy going to be that only plays 10-20 snaps when he has to go all out for the last 2 minutes?

At this point in their respective careers Clowney is just a much better player IMO. Pass rush nowadays is about equal, but coming off about the same number of sacks in less snaps last year I think the 33 year old Clowney will even be a better pass rusher in 2026 than the 37 year old Miller. Against the run Clowney is a much better player. If the salaries are similar this isn't even close IMO

Clowney because he is an every down edge rusher. He can help the team a little more in case someone gets hurt. Miller is a little limited there but still a really good situational rusher. If Gary was to go down you'd rather have Clowney take his place. They could have skipped Gary and williams and paid both these guys.

Sam hasn't flashed much.

I don't count on improvement. Some players may take a step forward and some may take a step back. I've learned over the last 30 years to hope but not expect.

Even though he's ILB I keep wondering how Bobbly Wagner would fit

Depends on which one is a better fit for what Parker wants to do. Whichever one it is that's the one I want. Bobby Wagner is another one I want if he fits in. But signing an older veteran will probably get a young unproven high draft pick waved/cut/traded. We need a veteran no doubt, but I'm not sure getting rid of an unproven young player is the answer. Going with only 5 receivers or 3 backs to make room isn't smart either. Glad I'm not a GM. I probably won't even make for a good couch GM.

GO COWBOYS! :star:
I dunno, I think if we gave you 30 years you could get past the divisional round.

4.0 and 4.5 sacks in 2022 and 2023 respectively, playing 27% and 28% of defensive snaps.

That’s what I’m doing, hoping.
Sorry, you said expect. I don't consider hope and expect to be the same thing. If I expect something, then I'm OK waiting on it to happen. If I'm only hoping, then I'm more likely to prepare for if those hopes don't pan out.

I think believing that Sam Williams can be more than what he's been for us strictly falls into the area of hope. I'd rather prepare in case he is what he has been.

Ok. I’m not as hung up on the word usage. But if you prefer hope, we can go with that.

That’s my point. “What he has been” hasn’t been as bad as you’re making it seem.

If I got 4.5 sacks out of him in a rotational role playing 28% of the time, I’d be fine with it.
