Would you trade a #1 pick for Steve Smith?

With Carolina going nowhere and probably a few years from having a franchise QB again, I wonder if the Panthers are open to dealing Steve Smith. Smith is having a down year, but I put that on a terrible Delhomme.

I know the Cowboys are only a year removed from the Roy Williams disaster, but Smith is exactly the type of player that the offense needs -- a field-stretching WR. With RW then becoming a #2 receiver, Witten up the middle and the running game what it is, that becomes a pretty imposing offense.

There does come a point where it's just throwing assets into a leaky bucket (the Joey Galloway deal), but I don't quite think this team is there.

and then we could trade the following year's #1 for Ochocinco when Smith didn't work out...

5 years ago, maybe, but not now. He has lost a step. I see him play just about every week. He is still one of the top receivers in the league, but he doesn't have the same burst and also drops catchable passes ala TO.

And BTW, the Panthers are NOT going to deal Steve Smith. He is the cash cow for that team. Steve Smith is everywhere in Charlotte and is the marquee guy for the franchise.

No more giving up #1's or 2's and 3's, for that mater. You build a team through the draft. We need to keep our draft picks. I hope JJ stops giving our pick away.

NO. I think Jerry will be gun shy in trades anyway since the general opinion is he got took in the Roy Williams deal (By the way, I still think we did just fine in that trade).

Plus, the 2010 Draft will be the best in years. Mark it down. 2011 Draft will be weak (unless you get Julio Jones).

id say no, id like to see them spend some quality high round picks on O-Line...not wrs or lbs....due to popular belief i think our receiving core is just fine

I completely agree. Getting rid of a pick for this upcoming draft, especially a first round one would be very stupid.

There are two reasons you cannot even begin to compare a trade for Steve Smith and the trade for Roy Williams.

First, Steve Smith has actually been a super star in this league and has been one of the top WRs for some time. Roy has not.

Second, Roy W. has upside...he's still a young guy. Steve Smith would probably light it up for 2-3 years with a change of scenery and a decent QB.

I want more than 2-3 years out of a #1 draft pick.

No.

Miles Austin number 1, Roy Williams Number 2, Crayton number 3, and Hurd and Ogletree behind them. Also use Witten a lot, and use our running backs as receivers more (Meaning Felix Jones). Draft a receiver next draft.

I think we will be ok like that for this season.

No, I think you only make a move like that when you need that 1 player to put your team over the Championship Hump.

As an NFL General Manager, you cannot give up on Roy Williams in just one season as there were too many draft picks given up and money paid to him.
