l Brandt: Cowboys Stadium is unbelievable

Gil Brandt, writing on NFL.com, is clearly a huge fan of the Cowboys' huge new stadium. As one commentor on the post wrote, it's as if Brandt considers the place almost cathedral like. Then again, maybe it is.

Part of the story:

While access to the plazas might be affordable, the luxury boxes aren't quite as reasonably priced. I ran into an old friend of mine, whose father was the first to buy a box at Texas Stadium, which opened in 1971. He told me he wanted to continue the tradition, so he was the first person to buy a luxury box at the new stadium. His father's box at old Texas Stadium cost $50,000 when he bought it. How much was the box at the new stadium, you ask? Try $3 million.

That being said, this stadium is unbelievable. The Cowboys needed a $350 million loan late last year to apply the finishing touches, and while other organizations were finding it impossible to land funding, Jones said his team's brand name allowed it to quickly receive the necessary money. The final tab for the stadium was $1.25 billion.

And there will never be another stadium like this. Just because of its magnitude, I don't think anyone can afford to duplicate this building.

could this be why jerry jones didnt go after a big name in free agency or get a top player in the draft?

economy wise, cowboys management trying to get money built back up before they go after top name players in free agency again;

I'm secretly rooting for this stadium to break Jerry Jones so he has to sell the team. Love the Cowboys but Jerry has let me down for too long.

Bring on the kool-aid drinkers.....

dont know if i would want that or not, now if some way, say jerry needs money and roger staubach can buy into the team some way, and have stock where roger has some say that jerry might have to get a general manager and let a real head coach coach the team, i wouldnt mind that;

but most likely jerry will make the money back

Never going to happen.

And at this point, that wish is incredibly foolish. While you may not like what he has done, he is showing signs of learning from his mistakes.

And most importantly, his time will be over not too far from now and his son will take over.

Can I assume the seat licenses brought in $550 million from this story?

$1,250 Total
-350 Loan
-325 Arlington
-550 Seat licenses?

I think Jerry paid a good amount to begin with.

really really doubt it. the organization is hardly cash strapped. frankly the reason why we didn't go after FAs is that we already have a ton of highly paid, and in some cases overpaid (Adams, Hamlin) players already.

makes you wonder if our civilzation ever goes under, will stadiums like this be viewed as pyramids of our time? : )

I think you are spot on. Between the stadium cost overruns and DeMarcus Ware's new contract, Jerry is pinched.

i like stephen, he has a head on his shoulders for knowing what he sees on the football field

and best i remember way back stephen said he would hire a head coach and let him run the team;

While i'm not thrilled with Jerry the GM we could do far worse then Jerry as the owner, so be careful what you wish for.
Just look at some of the penny pinching owners around the league and be thankful for Jerry who would do just about anything to get a SB win.

Far worse? Heck ya! Jerry is THE best owner in the league, imo. Too bad he's been more often mediocre as the GM. Currently, we can't have one w/o the other so we'll just have to ride it out until Stephen takes over.....

If Jerry was JUST the Owner I would have zero problem with him. It's the fact that he thinks he's qualified to be a NFL GM that drives me crazy.

Jerry may not be the smartest football mind in the NFL but he DOES know how to make money. Him going broke is the least of my worries concerning him.

Do you know that for a fact? This off season Jerry has done nothing but shed big contracts, make Kmart FA acquisitions and trade down to a back of the class draft. From what I read in February, that $350 mm auction rate loan was going to get converted to a high fixed rate note due to lack of market liquidity. I'm sure that his financials were also predicated on whoring out the naming rights to the stadium as well, ooops.

The one truly CONSISTENT element of this off season has been thrift, something heretofore not seen in Jerruh.

im not saying jerry would go broke, but that he gets in a bind with the economy with the way it is; and somehow, roger staubach steps in with his millions to buy into part ownership with the cowboys

350 million dollar loan is pretty big;
and youve got to think about this, whatever ware signs for, he is going to get a huge amount in bonus money, most likely 12 million or more;

then youve got players coming up next year with miles austin if he steps forward this year, then marcus spears, then a couple more players, so that would be about 20 million or more in bonus money right there;

and most likely you know or you would figure that roger staubach has some land around the new stadium too that he is going to make money off of ;

I really wish those of you with no knowledge of how an NFL team operates financially would stop spouting off with moronic ideas of how this team is making financial decisions with regards to player acquisition and retention.

All teams have what amounts to a nearly hard cap and floor each year. That number is about 130 mil for 2009.

If a team actually pays out 150 mil because of signing bonuses for new deals this year, they're actually using future cap dollars.

Either way the Cowboys, just like every other team make decisions on whom to sign or resign based on the player's talent and how they fit with the team.

There are only so many cap dollars to go around. The Cowboys decisions on how to allocate those cap dollars aren't always correct.

But they have nothing to do with how much or little Jerry's got in the bank!

So all you goofball conspiracy theorists can stop now.
