There is no such thing as fear in the NFL. I've been told even Mike Singletary doesn't use that tactic. When he threatens to bench an O-Lineman, that O-Lineman just says ok; I'll get another job somewhere else. No mention of not wanting to let himself, or his teammates, or his coach down, or he'll do better......... He wants to lose his J.O.B.

Fear? In the NFL? Nah...............
It worked for Jimmy Johnson.

Ok. My OP in this thread, was a fun jab at someone I'd debated with on this very topic. Ironically this poster hand picked, for his argument, Mike Singletary as not instilling fear into his players. Also, according to the said poster, Jimmy didn't use it and if he did it was all tongue and cheek. The players didn't fear him or fear losing their jobs.
I was on the opposide of the fence saying IMO - Fear is a good tool.

I thought for sure the 'rolleyes' emo was enough...............

What evidence is there that someone like Mike Singletary would accept our H.C. position? Yes. Parcells did. But Singletary and Cowher are not unaware of how the Parcells deal turned out. The two strong willed caches we had - Jimmy J. And Bill P. could not come to terms with Jerry. I think we are doomed to weak willed coaches. A strong willed coach is not likely to hook up with an owner/gm whom he would have reason to fear may undermine his authority in the eyes of his players.

Maybe I am overthinking this.

Didn't Singletary interview for the Dallas job before Wade got it? I think he did, which means at that time, he had no problem working for Jerry.

Yeah, because the niners are close to winning a playoff game, let alone make an appearance.

Yeah, they are.

They are 7-2 in the last nine games.

They are 3-1 this season. 3-0 in their division.

That loss this season was on a last second miracle from Favre.

They look like a playoff contender right now.

I like Singletary,he shows a passion for the game. However, let's not annoint him the second coming of Landry or Lombardi until he has the Niners in the playoffs not only this year but in the years following as well.

What act will?

The cupcake approach certainly won't.

If you have a veteran team of fat-cat millionaires, you start purging them and getting young, hungry guys who want to play. That's the way good teams do it like the Patriots, Steelers and Giants. Get rid of the guys who are getting settled in their millions or who are reaching their peak headed for a downhill slide and get a head coach who can mold young guys to play the type football you expect and demand.

Amen! :clap2:

Ummm. I am not so sure you can logically come to the conclusion you came to.

So you think he interviewed just for the hell of it and if he had gotten the job, he would've turned it down? I like my logic better.

I don't think Singletary would have worked for Jerry knowing that Redball was supposed to be next in line.

Only a few guys would do that and all of them are going to be old.

If Jerry wouldn't have committed to Red, I see no problems with Singletary working for Jerry.

I really love Singletary's style too. He's intense, to the point, but manages to respect his players in the way he communicates to them (ie he's not a raving lunatic dog cussing or belittling them). He doesn't seem to exhibit the extreme characteristics of Parcells and Jimmy, both of which I think wear thin in the long run.

It will be interesting to see how it turns out in SF, I like Mike and want him to succeed, but I hate the Niners.

Last year, I had concerns that Singletary was going to be that raving lunatic coach always yelling at guys. But that clip really showed how he got after guys but you could see the respect behind that. Especially when the lineman came up to him later and talked to him, that really showed me the culture of respect. In parenting, it is called an authoritative parenting style (I like to call it "rules with relationship)----kids know what is expected, but trust the parent and know why the rules are there.

The thought of Ray Rhodes's defensive toughness and genius, in Dallas, would always get my heart pounding.

And now a Mike Singletary.

And give Butch Davis credit for his success in Dallas. At his prime, he was an all-out attack coordinator Their type of attack defenses are a thang of beauty, I tell you.
