It's easy to find stats that tell you how many yards a receiver averages per reception, but it's hardly ever broken down into how many of those yards are before or after the catch.

TOP 10 Air Yards Per Reception 2007

1 Owens, Dal.....12.3
2 Moss, NE.........12.2
3 Edwards, Cle...12.2
4 Chambers, SD..12.1
5 CJohnson, Cin..12.1
6 Evans, Buf.......11.7
7 Fitzgerald, Ari..11.1
8 Galloway, TB....11.0
9 Wayne, Ind......10.6
10 Burress, NYG..10.6

Taken from the top 50 leaders in receptions, these ten players averaged the most yards at the catch (as opposed to Yards After Catch). IOW, these are the guys who caught the deepest balls, on average. They're all wide receivers, which makes sense. The two players considered to be the best in the league are #1 and #2.

The next two lists are taken from the top 50 leaders in total Yards After Catch. They show the YAC that each player averaged per reception. In the first one, running backs have been filtered out, or else they would dominate the list (as you'll see later).

Top 10 YAC Per Reception 2007 (WR only)

1 Jennings, GB.....7.4
2 Stallworth, NE...7.1
3 Galloway, TB.....6.8
4 DLee, GB...........6.4
5 Crayton, Dal......5.8
6 Welker, NE.........5.7
7 White, Atl..........5.7
8 Cotchery, NYJ....5.4
9 Driver, GB..........5.3
10 Boldin, Ari........5.2

The first thing you notice is that there's only one receiver who appears on both lists (Joey Galloway). The next thing that jumps out is that the Packers obviously have the best corps of YAC guys in the league. Very QB-friendly, if you will. I was surprised to see Crayton in the top 5--remember, this is an average, so it has nothing to do with having a lot of catches. It's more a product of defenses focusing on Owens and Witten.

If Crayton can get that many YAC per reception, imagine the posibilites when Felix is added to this mix. Which brings us to RB YAC...

Top 10 YAC Per Reception 2007 (all players)

1 RoBrown, Mia......10.1
2 Jones-Drew, Jac...9.9
3 Tomlinson, SD......9.6
4 Portis, Was..........9.6
5 Watson, Cin.........9.1
6 Westbrook, Phi.....9.0
7 Peterson, Min.......9.0
8 Weaver, Sea........8.9
9 Addai, Ind............8.6
10 Jackson, StL.......8.0

The elite YAC RB's are up over 8.0 YAC per reception. Last year, Barber averaged 6.1 YAC per reception.

Last year, no team had a player on all three lists.

Where will Felix end up on that last list in 2008, and what will that mean for this offense?

Great info!

If Crayton's spot was taken by a faster shiftier guy - wouldn't that be great?

Great stuff man.

Felix, based on the two preseason games we've seen so far, seems like he finds the seams really quick and hits it with great burst.

I can't wait to see him in the regular season.

Or just let Crayton do his thing, then add Felix to that.

Mostly we think of YAC guys as being elusive, but I think Crayton boosts his YAC as the hot read on blitzes.

Alot of the YAC can be attributed to the type of offense a team runs and the type of routes a reciever runs. Felix should be up there.

He's 5th in the league on that list, and you comment is 'wouldn't it be great if we could replace him?'

YAC also has something to do with the QB and how he can lead a WR in his route along with the offense that is ran.

Not an accident that there are so many Packers on the list and they had Favre at QB.....its not just the WRs.

Yeah--this year after the catch the Packers receivers will get WACK instead of YAC.

I'm looking foward to seeing what Felix will be able to do with some of his YAC. He seems like a guy who really does a good job of getting you quite a few of those on catches and he's been doing that essentially with nothing but #2's so far. Wait till he gets out there with Romo, Owens, Witten, etc.

I get the impression that has more to do with the system than the WRs, aside from Jennings.

Some guys fit their systems better than others.

FWIW, there's been a lot of research that shows that YAC has very little to do with the QB.

One thing that we know we can't credit to the particular offensive system is if a team gets one player on all three lists--that's personnel. The Pats probably would have done it last year if Maroney had stayed healthy.
