OK, Yankees are up 9.5 up with 23 to go. When I first asked this question, you guys said there were still to many left.

What do you think? Can the Sox come back or is it a done deal yet?
Here's what I said 4 weeks ago:

I am not sure I would say a team was "done" when they are currently tied for the lead in the Wild Card, but I do think you can start printing those "NY Yankees AL East Champs" t-shirts. I read somewhere they've never blown a division lead this big.

The only part of that statement I would change is the Red Sox have a 2' game on the Wild Card, instead of being tied.

Are the Sox not a billion dollar roster either?
Well, the Yankees are in a whole other stratosphere, but certainly Red Sox fans should not be crying poverty. However, the Red Sox might not be as high as you seem to think they are. They are roughly 60% of the Yankees. This is a USA Today table from the beginning of the season:

Team2009 payroll
Yankees $201,449,189
Mets $149,373,987
Cubs $134,809,000
Red Sox $121,745,999
Tigers $115,085,145
Angels $113,709,000
Phillies $113,004,046
Astros $102,996,414
Dodgers $100,414,592

Congratulations to the Yankees for winning the East, becoming the 1st team in the majors to clinch, winning 100 games and winning home field throughout.

What really shocks me is the fact that the Sox got sweeped again and they still have a 6 game lead on Texas for the Wildcard race. Texas was neck and neck at the begining of the month but since Clevelend series early in the month, the Rangers have kinda fallen off a cliff. In 16 games since sweeping the Indians, the Rangers have gone 6-10. On Sept. 10th, the Rangers were just two back of the Sox and coming on. From that point on, they just didn't do anything. Really disappoint cause I really thought the Rangers had a good chance of winning the Wild Card with a pretty favorable schedule.

Since that time, the Sox have gone 10-6 and have pretty much clinched the Wildcard. Congrats to the Sox as well I suppose but man, I really thought the Rangers might be able to pull it out.
