You find a way to stack that d line. We've already done the thing with investing a ton of resources in the corners. They still get lit up with great quarterbacks when they have an hour to throw due to our d line applying zero pressure

Yep, that's surely been a problem in the fairly recent past, although significant improvement is underway with Demarcus Lawrence and David Irving coming into their own. At least, it's a good start. There's still hope. Perhaps Damontre Moore might come around pretty soon, as well. I enjoyed seeing Jaylon Smith get a sack vs. San Fran Sunday. With luck, the draft could hopefully provide more help with our pass rush in 2018.

Coming into the season the FO knew this club was a yr or two away defensively. The upcoming draft is the big one. The Cowboys are on the cusp of big things. The Defense needs a real leader both on the field and more importantly on the sidelines. The D really needs some nastiness, a Burfict or Suh would be perfect for the Cowboys.

I agree that our next draft should bring a positive effect that year. As I understand it, we're on tap to receive about 9 or 10 picks in that draft. It should get our 2018 year off for a great season to follow. It should be very enjoyable -- especially so, since we'll be hosting it. :)

They didn't need to be one or two seasons away. They could have still overhauled the secondary while putting out a competent defense.

For example, go out and sign Micah Hyde instead of just giving Heath the starting job. Hyde, alone, would have made this secondary much better. Plus he'd be a good guy to work with Woods and Jones.

Nothing is more frustrating about this organization than the fact they think it's an either/or situation on how to build a club. Either spend like a drunken sailor and blow your cap on FA or just draft and shop the triple bargain barrel in FA.

Fix the D?

1) Dump Marinelli

2) Find a real SS

3) Find a real MLB even if that means moving Lee back there and maybe playing Smith at the WILL next year if he's completely healthy.

4) For god's sake invest in the ********* 1 tech spot. Enough of the grocery bag boy approach.

5) Bring Lawrence back, tag him if need be. But also, invest another high pick or even some FA money in the DE spot. 6th in sacks is great but I still think we lack that true speed rush end.

In an outside the box thinking, I'd move Jones back to CB and install Woods as the FS. Jones could make someone like Scandrick expendable. Further in that outside the box thinking, if Jones can play CB, I'd consider then moving Awuzie to S to pair with Woods.

EDIT: Cutting or trading Scandrick doesn't save much in the cap so you might as well keep him.

Need a Safety that can cover Ertz, and MLB like Rolondo with size, speed, and strength. If Jaylon was 100% we would have a similar player. In fact when we play Philly I would send Jaylon a lot to go get him. That would be his objective for the game because down hill he looks explosive again.

The middle is the key to beating Wentz. He loves to run a lot. Speed speed speed and discipline football.

I get rid of Marinelli and look for a coach that uses 4 linemen and has similar philosophies in how the D-Line is used except if they use a wide 9 technique. I wouldn't be against more of a gap clogging 1-tech, but it's not a big priority either.

I want different schematics in terms of how we use the DB's and LB's, particularly in the pass game. I still want us to mix up zone and man coverages.

We need to be much stronger up the middle because passes between the numbers are too easy to complete. I think we really need to look at a veteran MIKE or WILL for next season who can step in and start right away if needed. I would still look for Hitchens (who I would be re-signing) and Jaylon to start at the MIKE, but with Lee's injury past I wouldn't want another situation where we are forced to start Jaylon if he's not ready.

I would be willing to pay a guy like Micah Hyde what Micah Hyde got if he could play SS (5 years, 32.5 million/14 mill guaranteed). However, as great as Byron is at FS, I would consider moving him back to CB if it means replacing Scandrick and if we feel confident in Xavier Woods at FS and we have a SS that can play deep zone if needed and make plays and tackles in the box. But we better feel super confident in our safeties, otherwise I would stick to Brown/Lewis/Awuzie as the corners for next season.

We need to get better at 3-tech and at RDE. I wouldn't begrudge us drafting a RDE in the first round again if we had the guy we wanted. This would allow us to have Lawrence, Taco and the rookie to alternate the DE spots.

you dont have a blank check
you cant fire Jerry

seriously

to be in the playoffs every year
you only need to beat the east. you can fine tune the defense to stop their strengths
you know you got at least 5 years of Wentz and 10 if he keeps playing well

Cousins may go

Eli will go in the next 2 or 3

you know what each of those 3 do well and what they want to do

my take is with the receivers Giants and Skins have a pro bowl caliber safety is a must have

a 1 tech that can push the pocket and stop the run
guy like Wentz i just try to collapse the pocket and control the edges
both Commanders and Eagles have elite tackles but they are getting old for nfl players
of course they can replace them, but its a thought

i trade or draft a safety to play with Woods
secondary has to be a strength

you have to push the pocket and make the qb easy for your ends

Dallas needs a fast linebacker
not a general, just a tackle machine

those 3 make the defense able to compete with top defenses i think

the middle of the defense is where I would be strong. Great MLB, hard hitting safeties, DT's that can get up the field. You need the edge stuff too, but you got to make people pay for going over the middle and you have to stop the run.

- Give me Poe or Logan in FA at the 1 tech.

- Give me Chubb or one of the speed rushers in the first round to pair with Lawrence

- If (and this is a big if), Smith gets his nerve back fully over the next 6-8 months, he's my starting WILL and Lee goes back to MLB. I know MIKE has been rough on Lee in the past but our best alignment at LB might be with Lee in the middle and Smith at the WILL.

- Get me a coordinator who is aggressive and will attack the LOS with his front seven. A guy like Smith will be better served playing in a system like Philly's than ours IMO.

I'd drool over a front seven of say this.......

SDE - Lawrence
RDE - Chubb (or Key, or Landry or Ferrell).
1 Tech - Poe
3 Tech - Collins
MIKE - Lee
WILL - Smith
SAM - Wilson or a draft pick who can slowly work his way in eventually replace Lee.

Also a guy like Vaccarro would interest me in FA to replace Heath.

Foster would have been perfect in last year's draft

Yes. I think it would have been a much better pick performance wise than Tank. So far that pick isn't looking too good for us. There is almost no doubt it would have been a much better pick, at least in the short run.

Along these lines, who are the up and coming DCs in the league? Rarely do DCs take a lateral move so if we want to make a change at DC it's either going to be a guy who is looking to get back into a DC job (like a Mike Nolan or Gus Bradley), a guy from a fired staff or some up and comer.

What are some of the hot up and coming names? Two college guys mentioned were Venables and Elko but I am not sure either is a likely option.

Replace the d coordinator
Ensure d coordinator is not a jerry yes man
Ensure d coordinator does not clap like a circus seal
ok if i take you serious
who will replace him?
a 4-3 dc that can build with this roster or a complete system change that needs 3 or more years to transform?

why change Marinelli when it looks like theres 3 pieces away
you still have the holes in your defense if you change
Dick Lebeau would not make this roster a top defense without adding help

if you want change fine
but who and how with this cap and these players

If Lawrence is gone then i'm going DE & DT.

There is no way they can let him walk if he continues to put up sack and pressure numbers like he has. I get the injury concern and the cost concern but to let your best pass rusher walk when you finally have some cap space would be insane IMO.

They have to bite the bullet and pay him. If you let guys like him walk you are forever going to be "building" the D through the draft.
