The Dallas Cowboys are easily the most profitable sports franchise in the US and close to being so in the entire world.

And yet this organization with a world class stadium, world class team facilities, and the highest value in the NFL is paying its head coach and assistant coaches in the bottom of the league’s pay scale. When there is no cap on coaches pay, why is this happening? When it comes to coaching, you usually get what you pay for.

It doesn’t take a football expert to know that to win a championship in the NFL, or even get close, it requires an outstanding head coach and staff. Knowing that, how much does this franchise value its coaches? Surely we are hiring the best possible candidates, and willing to spend at the same high level as our facilities to get the best coach that gives us the best chance to win, right?

Brian Schottenheimer was the guy our owner believes is worthy of leading the storied Dallas Cowboys to a championship. A guy with no experience at any level as a HC, and no other team was even interested in interviewing.

How much is Schotty valued by this organization ? His $4.5 million salary puts him right at the bottom of pay for non-interim NFL head coaches. The bengals Zac Taylor reportedly makes what Schotty makes. The only NFL HC making less is the browns HC Todd Monken. Even when Mike McCarthy was here - a man with a SB ring on his resume - was never even the highest paid NFC East HC, lol.

So knowing it requires a strong, talented head coach to win big in this league, not only did Jerry pick a guy no one else wanted to interview, he pays whoever he hires chicken feed.

There are several old sayings that apply here:
  • You get what you pay for.
  • Whatever you value most, you pay for.
  • If winning is the goal, you must be willing to pay for it.
We’ve had six different head coaches in the 21st century. Two of those six had great resumes and a proven track record of success in this league.(Parcells and Big Mac) The other four - Campo, Wade, Garrett and now Schotty - are not serious hires.

You get what you pay for.

We get it, the organization sucks. You’ve told us pretty much daily and many others hourly say the same thing. I don’t get why people enjoy it so much. Try and enjoy the games win, lose or tie. It’s ok to complain. Lord knows there’s a lot to complain about but doing it every day and others in every thread creates such a depressing forum.

When Johnson and Parcells were here things were about football first.

Jerry doesn’t like that.

Also: Jimmy once said that Jerry WANTS to be head coach, but he can’t. So to scratch that itch he tries to assemble the staff himself. Make guys work with others they are unfamiliar with because he doesn’t want to eat contracts.

When you weigh that against all off the hundreds of millions he has wasted by trying to keep the out of tune band together….

Don't disagree but and a big but, Parcells was looking for a last paycheck for retirement and Jerry needed a stadium deal, MM was a lazy, overrated yes man, so you get what you pay for is correct, yes men who wanted a check more than a championship and Jerry playing football guy is still happy. Remember Jerry says anything can happen and they just need a little luck. It's the way it is; nobody is going to challenge Jerry the organization isn't set up that way.

Uh, HELLO! You don't like it, don't read it. Are you that dense? Culture lover.

Jerry's pockets are full, microphones always in his face, people clamoring for his autograph. He's a rockstar, the owner of the most valuable sports franchise in the world. Jerry has exactly what he has paid for, and after a few drinks he'll tell you it's money well spent. He's okay with the way things are. It is the fan that's in agony

You’re right about how things are set up. And that’s exactly why we keep failing.

Poor to average coaching minimizes whatever level of talent you have. On the other hand, great coaching maximizes the talent you have. And they can teach players how to be disciplined and collectively work together to win.

I saw an interesting video with retired bengals HC Marvin Lewis earlier in the summer. He made a telling comment back in August when watching the Cowboys scrimmage the rams.

Specifically Lewis noticed that Cowboys players didn’t seem to have a good level of discipline whereas the rams were much more disciplined and coordinated in their reps, their routines and terminology. He noted that the Dallas D seemed very undisciplined in its formations, coverages, etc. That was in August. Lewis isn’t a great HC but even he saw signs of problems ahead of the season.

Coaching matters a ton. Great coaches aren’t cheap.

It's 100% GREED that is sinking this organization! When you constantly do you shopping at the bargain bin, you get what you pay for.

Right. Parcells didn’t win but he took an annual 5-11 roster and turned it into one that could get a one seed under Wade. Developed Romo also.

Then Jerry stepped in and said ‘thanks, but I’ll take it from here,’ and destroyed that the same way he did what Jimmy built.

Parcells as much as said that would happen on his way out.

“I bought myself an occupation.” I can’t believe Jerry actually had the nerve to say that to fans.

Jerry could have had Sean Payton. Those two are actually friends, but no way Jerry was paying that type of money for a HC.

Don’t go telling me that Payton isn’t that great without considering what’s here now….and who do you want finding and developing the next QB. I’ll take the guy who brought Romo along over Shoddy. Thanks.

Payton was the best we could have ever done at HC, but he makes probably about 15m a year more than Shoddy. Considering what’s at stake and the numbers involved, that’s nothing….but not to those two. Hope it’s worth it for them. They go out of their way to never have a down season (not going well) but what do they figure is going to happen when Dak is gone? Draft another fourth rounder? An UDFA? Yeah good luck.

If there IS actually a plan, it makes no sense.

We went down the hall haze to get our head coach, and because he filled Jerry with a lot of culture stuff, he loved it!!! I'm sure Dak was highly brought in as well, and we know he likes being comfortable!
