While doing some voting on the best picks of all time thing on NFL.com (Or whatever they're calling it) it got me to thinking who people might pick as their starting lineups if they could choose any players, from any era, in their prime and build a dream team.
So I thought for fun maybe we could do that here just to do something different and kill some of the boredom while we're waiting for the draft to eventually roll around.
I'll start it and I'd like to see it go like this. Tell us what kind of offense you're going to want to run (Run and shoot, west coast, etc) and what defense (46, 3-4, 4-3, etc) and then give us who you'd have as your starters. For WRs, depending on style of offense, pick 3-4 guys you'd have and 2 runningbacks, if you wish, as the trend now is a two back system.
I'm more of a ball control kind of guy so my offense wouldn't be so much predicated on speed, though I'd have some, as it would be effective, effiecent, smart play.
Starting offense:
QB- Joe Montana
I seriously thought about going Roger here but I couldn't do it. I've always said that Joe is the best I've seen and I'll stand by that.
HB- Emmitt Smith and spelled by Gale Sayers
The workhorse in Emmitt being spelled with the speed and athletics of Sayers would be frightening to any defense.
FB- Larry Csonka
I imagine most will put DJ here, and rightfully so, but for my offense this guy gives me not only a blocker but a really solid running threat as well and like I said I'm more of a ball control, grind it out, kind of guy myself.
LT- Anthony Munoz
LG- Larry Allen
C- Dermonitti Dawson
RG- Randall McDaniel
RT- Erik Williams
A couple guys might not be playing right where they would have normally but I think this would be a pretty darn dominate O-Line.
TE- Jason Witten
Yeah there are guys how folks will think are better and more deserving but he's one of my two favorite TE's of all time and I had to go with him.
WR- Jerry Rice & Bob Hayes as starters with Michael Irvin and Paul Warfield as the 3rd and 4th receivers.
This, to me, was probably the hardest position to pick the guys from cause there are so many guys I could slot into the spots and be thrilled with. Cris Carter, Randy Moss, John Stalworth, Raymond Berry, etc. I would have loved to have had Steve Largent in there as well but I figured I needed Hayes and Warfield for their playmaking and speed. Rice was a given and I just couldn't put in my heart to leave Michael Irvin off my all time team. He'd be the heart and soul of this team as well.
For defense I'd run a 4-3. This will obviously cause me to neglect a great player like Ware but I'm more a 4-3 guy myself.
DE- Charles Haley & Deacon Jones
The D-Line was another really hard place to choose from cause of all the great players there have been but I really love these two as my bookends.
DT- Bob Lilly and Joe Green
I'd be absolutely terrified to have to deal with these two guys inside. It was hard to pass up having The Manster in there but I think Lilly was better.
OLB- LT and Bobby Bell
MLB - Ray Lewis
CB (I'll go 3 deep here)- Deion Sanders, Mike Hayes, Mel Blount
The perfect combination of size, speed, strength, agility, all that for my top 3 corners.
Safety- Charlie Waters and Ronnie Lott
I like the combination of a very smart player in Waters and bit time hitter and playmaker in Lott.
Special teams:
Kicker- Morten Anderson
Kick Returner- Devin Hester
Punt Returner- Deion Sanders
