Weak analogy - being better than 75% of the teams is great if the sack averages are good but bad if the sack averages are bad. 75% is not the equivalent of getting 25% of your answers wrong on a test.

Upon further reseach.

The Cowboys are in fact 16th in the league in sacks not 8th with a total of 9 sacks. The Ravens lead with 17 sacks. The Cowboys (even though they are 16th) are closer to the bottom in total sacks the worst being the Giants with (2) and Broncos/Oakland having (4) each.

LINK

1. Ravens: 17
2. Eagles: 16
3. Bears: 15
4. Saints: 13
5. Dolphins: 12
6. 49ers: 12
7. Packers: 12
8. Bills: 11
9. Patriots: 11
10. Chargers: 11
11. Bengals: 10
12: Browns: 10
13. Seahawks: 10
14. Falcons: 10
15. Steelers: 10
16. Cowboys: 9
17. Jets: 8
18. Colts: 8
19. Titans: 8
20. Texans: 8
21. Panthers: 8
22. Cardinals: 7
23. Bucs: 7
24. Commanders: 7
25. Rams: 7
26. Lions: 6
27. Vikings: 6
28. Jaguars: 6
29. Chiefs: 6
30. Broncos: 4
31. Raiders: 4
32. Giants: 2

So, sack wise. The Cowboys are actually middle of the pack and not 8th in the league and in a league were defense matter, a 75 is barely a passing grade. If you are only at 50, you arn't dominating any pass rush.

Not sure where the 8th in the league in sacks came from unless he means 8th in the league in NOT giving up sacks as I beleive we've only given up 3. (cheers for the O-line!)

Sacks per game
1. Ravens: 4.25
2. Eagles: 4.00
3. Bears: 3.75
4. Chargers: 3.67
5. Saints: 3.25
6. Cowboys: 3.00
6. Dolphins: 3.00
6. 49ers: 3.00
7. Packers: 3.00
8. Bills: 2.75
9. Patriots: 2.75
10. Chargers: 11

These numbers don't mean too much. The Packers and 49ers have terrible pass defenses.

Which is why they blitz so much, they know it's the only chance they have because they cant cover anyone

Look at AVERAGE - we've played one less game than many teams.

Nevertheless, your equating ranking with grading is wrong.

Top 10% doesn't mean much if the average GPA of the student body is 2.5, but it's a hell of a lot if the average GPA is 3.5. Ranking alone meants little - the overall success of the league has to be factored in.

As it is, 3.0 sacks per game is pretty solid - much better than the Cowboys have been used to in recent years. I suspect it could be better, but it appears our game plan against the Titans was to contain Vince Young and keep him from beating us with his legs rather than attacking him.

once again I'd say this points to how some stats are not indicative of a true result, because we had almost zero pass rush all of the Jacksonville game and then no pass rush again this past Sunday...we racked up 6 sacks against Washington but they were missing their best player and have played much better offensively since he returned...

I dont care as much about the sack number as I do about seeing opposing QB's get hit, knocked down and hurried...if we get the sacks that go with that, awesome...but if the QB has all day to throw (as they have in basically 2 1/2 of our 3 games) then eventually that is going to catch up with us

David

Exactly, look at each game individually and that isn't impressive. Against Jacksonville there was no pass rush, except the one sack. Even against Washington there wasn't much of a pass rush in the first half, same against tennesee.

I am a big fan of observing the Qualitative data rather then the Quantitative data, which means you have to watch the games and get a feel directly, instead of just looking at stats and averages.

I have not been impressed with the Defense so far (surprise surprise). From my observation, the defense was sub par the first game, dominant the 2nd game and solid in it's 3rd outing.

You can only play the teams that are on the schedule, but as of now, dominating the Skins and Tennessee (and we didnt get too much pressure on the QB that game), is not what am going to rate the Defense on.
