Zimmer is not the reason for the conservative play calling. He used to Blitz a pretty fair amount under Campo. Parcells is the reason they don't Blitz, he even stated his reasons for not wanting to do so in his Press Conference.

Fact is that Zim tries to scheme to cover up for poor coverage in the Safety position. When he had Woodson back there, he didn't have to worry about this as much and Blitz accordingly.

Its not so much blitzing. You can create pressure without blitzing.

We don't run line stunts, and we don't move people around.

And when we do blitz, its blatantly obvious where the extra blitzer is coming from.

We do not disguise blitzes to save our life.

We're 5th worst in sacks, while running a defense thats main premise is to generate pressure by keeping the offense off balance.

Unbelievable.

Where to we rank in interceptions?

No Mike Zimmer defense has ever been able to force interceptions either. But then again, that goes hand in hand with creating pressure.

You pressure a QB into bad throws, and the interceptions follow.

We are suprisingly tied for 12th in the league at getting INTs. Which is not great by any standard but not bad considering we do not pressure the QB much.

You can only get so exotic, depending on the people who execute the schemes and the strengths/weaknesses of the opponent. Our Safeties are horrible in coverage and our Defensive Ends are underperforming. It is hard to run an efficient blitz when the DE's can easily be taken by a single blocker, that leaves people free to block the blitz and really nullifies the overall effectiveness of the 3-4. Zim has to scheme in a manner that causes pressure without exposing our weaknesses. He cannot get too aggressive and exotic if Parcells tells him not to, which Parcells has done.

I am in total agreement that our schemes are vanilla, but Zimmer is only doing what Parcells is telling him to do. This is only his second year coaching the 3-4, so that alone should tell you Parcells is still heavily involved in the game-planning.

All I'm saying is not to blame Zim for doing what he's been told to do.
