ZONERS:

I cut this out of Micky Spags answer about our punter.....he spoke of our Kicker and his chances to make the team.

WHO or WHY did you Zoners get me excited about the rookie kicker we drafted who could consistantly BOOM them out of the dang ENDZONE!

Talk to me!

DID WE WASTE A PICK?

He did a decent job last year, and from I've seen so far, rookie Nick Folk is going to have to come on if he's going to force his way onto the roster.

Never liked the pick, but it is still early.

I hate him, but only because he's a Wildcat. I bet he kicks like they win Rose Bowls.

I do like him but not enough for him to be the 2nd kicker on the team. If he flat out beats Garmatica in TC than Im all for it but if not than Id rather have an extra WR,CB OR OLmen than an extra kicker.

They are called mediots for a reason.

OTA Observations

Rookie receiver Isaiah Stanback, still recovering from last fall's foot surgery, appeared to be running smoothly with the Cowboys trainers and said he's made "huge strides" this week. "I was running full-speed routes this week, cutting full speed, everything," Stanback said. "It's still not 100 percent, but it was looking good. Felt good." Stanback said he's still targeting training camp for his full return, though he might try to participate in some individual drills during next weekend's mini-camp.

Had a nice chat with second-year safety Pat Watkins, who has done some traveling recently. Not across the globe, mind you -- that's for another off-season. Watkins, a Florida native, wanted to see what the great state of Texas had to offer. "I'd never even been to Texas until I moved out here to play for the Cowboys," he said.

I missed most of the first mini-camp because of DCC duties, but rookie kicker Nick Folk's leg appears as strong as advertised. Kickoffs certainly weren't a strong suit for the Cowboys last season, and Folk can provide that if Wade Phillips can find room for him on the roster.

I think drafting a young leg was cool, I mean they could have did worse. Folk might be the kickoff guy...

Ive never seen him kick live so i would have no way to tell. The reports on him were very very mixed but thats why TC and preseason are fun.

If he does not kick FGs better than Gramatica, the pick is a waste.

End of story.

A kickoff specialist is a waste of a roster spot.

All that says is that your kickoff coverage is terrible.

He was the best kicking prospect in the Draft. A 6th round pick is a roll of the dice. It was worth the risk.

He will pin teams deep on kickoffs. He has a chance to beat out Martin. He can be an emergency Punter if McBriar gets hurt.

No guts, no glory.

"Kicking" prospect? Obviously not placekicking. But overall "kicking", you are right.

If you really want a true placekicker, he is not as accurate as necessary. He had a great combine and that is to his credit, but if you look at his overall numbers, there is a reason why he was ranked where he was prior to the draft. He was not accurate.

If you want a combination player who can boom the kickoffs and hope you can get better with his accuracy, fine.

We had another kicker around who had the same profile. Great on kickoffs, but spotty on FG kicking (what really counts).

His name was Jose Cortez.

How many 6th round picks even make the team let alone play a lot? If Folk can be a good kick off specialist right away and then develop into a good kicker in a year or two then it's a pretty good pick. Montavious Stanley, Justin Beriault, Rob Pettiti, B.J. Tucker and Zuriel Smith were are last 5 sixth round picks. If Folk makes ANY IMPACT it's not a bad pick.

I hope he just straight out beats Automatica. I dont want to feel like we wasted a pick, and I dont want to carry two kickers. We are going to need the extra spots.

Since I am not given to hyperbole I figure I should defend my comment that he was the best kicker in the Draft. Here is what he did this year for a putrid Arizona Wildcat team. Notice how few PATs he had to attempt. Notice how often he punted from real deep. Notice how his FG misses are all over 41 yards. The one blocked was a freaking jailbreak.

After you look at this if you still feel he isn't accurate and only a kickoff guy then that's your opinion and you are entitled to it. No freaking way. He got better each year, and had to try mostly long FGs and even kicked under pressure. Plus he was also the Punter which is added pressure.

Oh, for anyone wondered about the kickoffs vs. Oregon. Mostly squib kicks to prevent a return. Links provided. I will try and find breakdowns of the 2 missing games.

PATs Attempts...22
PATs Made...22
1/19 yards 0/0
20/29 yards 5/5
30/39 yards 4/5
40/49 yards 5/9
50+ 1/1

One miss under 40 yards, obviously in one of the 2 games I couldn't find the breakdown. One other attempt from 40+ that was missed that I also did not find. 9 of 10 from 39 yards in. 6 of 10 from beyond 40 yards. 100% on PATs.

I stand by what I said. You can make up your own minds.

At first I didn't like the thought of drafting a kicker, but as I thought about it more I figured they saw something in the kid.

I'll trust the GM, coach, and scouts in their decision and pray it works out.
