Hey, at least we didn't pull a John Gruden and draft another Sebastian Janikowsi.

It isn't even a case of last year. The #53 is for all intents and purposes a protected developmental player in many cases. Others it is veteran insurance.

It gives you flexibility and injury insurance without the worries of having to scramble to find talent off the street if disaster does strike.

Who is talking about wind-up monkeys?

Only you.

and in some cases it can be on the special teams w/a goal of improving the kicking game.

On draft day, when I heard the pick, I didn't feel pro or con.

I gave the Cowboys a bye on the pick.

We'll see how it works. If the Cowboys want to get a little cute in the 6th or 7th round, I don't have a big problem with it.
I was sick to my stomach and at the same time a bit exhilerated. Not that I believe they paid any attention to me, but after the first game of the year I sent Jeff Ireland a letter about him. It's kind of fun to think I might have had a small hand. Then again...he is a kicker.

I bet you haven't had a wink of sleep since the draft because you are too giddy about getting Folk and you calling it.....

You try to hide behind this "anti-kicker" mentality. But you are pleased with it and giddy.....hence, the no sleep.

;)

I rarely sleep as it is.

I actually called to other things I am way more proud of.

I called it that we would trade down and get Spencer.

Once Steve Smith of USC was taken I called it that we would trade out of the 2nd round to try and get back our 3rd and 5th (ended up being a 3rd and 4th) lost in the trade back up to get Spencer, and I said we'd go O-line, though I admit I was thinking Allen Barbre or Andy Allemon, though I did like Doug Free after reading a post by Silverbear.

Keeping two kickers is less than ideal, but can certainly be justified. If a kicker gets you an 8-10 yard gain every kick-off, that is meaningful. That translates into less points for the opponents and more points for the Cowboys. That is a good thing.

A judgment call has to be made when you get to that part of the roster. Often you have say a kicker like Folk who provides something tangible every sunday, versus a guy who has potential. You need some developmental guys, but if a guy can really boom kickoffs, he does have value.

Although most teams don't employ two kickers, some do, such as the Colts and it has worked well for them.

hey - i hope the kid works out and BEATS martEEN "you got female parts i'll chase 'em" gramattica. it's not as if we didn't pluck our current kicker out of the stands or anything.

wait...

we've tried home grown (and we all know how bad the home grown stuff can by w/o steve "hydro" hoffman) we've tried big name, we've tried yesterdays hero - i for one am not ready to call this important position taken care of simply cause we've got a body there as it is.

if he can't out kick marteen great - PS him and let's see what happens. but all this whining and moaning over a 6th round pick in a weak draft is just old.

I certainly wanted Dallas to draft a kicker since this class seemed pretty deep. I really wanted Medlock instead of Folk but Folk actually has a stronger leg. He needs to improve his consistency to be an NFL kicker but he can certainly change the field position game for us.

Well, I remember that you had a long snapper in one of your earlier mocks. Was there a kicker in it too?

In my very 1st mock I had us taking Folk in the 6th round and a LS in the 7th.

In a later Mock I had us taking Zack Deossie, who is also a LS.

It's about value and need. There was value and we had need.

I was not too happy with the pick. Thought it was a waste, however, I guess if he proves himself as a real value than I guess I was wrong. I really don't think he will beat out Martin G.

"Kicking" prospect? Obviously not placekicking. But overall "kicking", you are right.

If you really want a true placekicker, he is not as accurate as necessary.

that's why he's a rookie

I'll trust the scouting department on this one, I don't think they picked him just because they felt he was going to be nothing more than a kick-off specialist

If it works out like the Pats draft last year I will be very happy, wouldnt mind keeping 2 kickers on the team until midway through the season but I would be shocked if we kept 2 kickers all the way through Dec and into the preseason.

I wouldn't, as Wade has kept 2 kickers in the past

Yeah, with how Gramatica tore it up last year and boomed his kickoffs, it would be hard for anyone to beat him out.

Folks here act like Gramatica is some sort of great kicking saviour.

He's an average field goal kicker who sucks on kickoffs.

Boy, that's hard to beat out.

I think we're cursed with kickers. We went expensive with Vanderjagt and got burned!

I thought that too this time last year, but Gramatica gave me some new found confidence in our kicking situation. But that doesn't mean I'm against him getting competition from Folk though, that will hopeful make them both better.

I would love to be a scout again. I did that for Saguaro High School here in Tucson and then for the U of A. I think that is one of the most fun jobs in football.

No, I didn't and didn't expect to. I have been thinking about writing to tell them I will scout Antoine Cason for them and give them full reports and video if they wish.
