Fans here may have been, but a lot of draft experts had Charlton and Watt rated about the same. (Some had Charlton up to 10 spots higher than Watt.) It wouldn't surprise me if most GMs did as well.
Watt is a DEFENSIVE football player!!! He has attitude, ability, and a desire to be great! Taco had non of that, especially attitude and desire to be great. You need a new GM if he thought Taco would be a better professional football player than TJ Watt!!

Taco Carlton was the worst pick ever. He didn't play good football in college and his combine times was terrible. Come on, who would spend a first round pick on a DE that runs a 4.8? Terrible, terrible pick and we all knew (most of us knew) that Taco was going to be a bust all along.

I'm not real sure that's what the article said. The article says that McClay agreed that Watt fit more of a LB role and Taco fit DE. It did not say that he agreed with the pick or analysis or whatever. And that is a true statement IMO. He's not really a 43 DE. The article also didn't say that Marinelli liked or rated Taco over Watt. It said they slated DE position and that's why the decision was made to take Taco. Horrible decision for sure but the honest truth is that this was all driven by the teams blind pursuit of a pass rusher and not the more reasonable approach of Best Player Available.

There's the key right there....."blind pursuit of a pass rusher".
Yes we needed a pass rusher, but that doesn't justify picking the St. Bernard that lives in the dog house across the street just because he calls himself a pass rusher. Marinelli didn't just whiff on this pick, he favored numerous lousy picks. In my opinion Marinelli was THE lousy pick.

I mean yes hindsight is 20/20 and I am sure every team could look back and wish they had drafted a different player at one point with multiple of their picks in multiple drafts,
but at the end of the day you make a "pick and hope" its right.

The difference is, some teams "pick and hope" much, much more effectively and regularly than did Marinelli.

Of course if everyone here could have been in charge of the draft there would be all pro players at every position. The entire point of hindsight being 20/20 is that people overestimate how often they predicted something right and underestimate how often their predictions were wrong and they were probably wrong a lot more than people give credit for.

Randy Moss, Troy Polamalu, TJ Watt, and Tua Tagovailoa are the only ones I can remember having a really strong feeling for. Usually I know that it's pretty much a crap shoot.

Blah blah blah. The draft is a Crap Shoot. Sometimes a franchise gets lucky/sometimes they don't. Move on already.

If Gregory is a viable DE option then so is Watt. They have the same measurables except Watt isn't a pothead.
Link?!

Normal Jerry Jones revisionist history. Taco did not develop because the "grumpy old men" were trying to play the weed head who they liked more instead of letting Taco play and develop. This made Taco frustrated pulled in and out the line up which lead to the doghouse.

This happen because you did not have a Head Coach in charge of personnel. A real Head Coach would have responded to the grumpy old men.."we are going to go with Taco because Gregory is unreliable so play him and let him develop."

So let's see how long McCarthy will be Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys with the main grumpy old man still around.
Taco sucked, he was never going to play for us, Grumpy coaches or not.

The draft is a crap shot in the late rounds. In the early rounds you CAN NOT pick a dud like Taco. Good teams consistently hit on their early round picks!

Are you being serious or trolling? You gotta be trolling. If not, then you’re not a real Cowboys fan. I’ll take 35 sacks over 3 seasons over a stupid *** Hot Boyz nickname.
Sacks are an offense stat

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Gregory and Taco about the same weight? They had no problem putting Gregory in as a 4-3 DE.
Gregory, Quinn, and Watt are similar in size. Actually Watt is probably bigger than both, butt Watt was not a scheme fit and Gregory and Quinn were!!
What kind of sense does that make? NONE!!!

No. But this board overrates him
You may think he is overrated but not many knowledgeable football fans do. I would take Watt over either of our starting DE’s. Watt is a much better pass rusher than Lawrence, and plays the run way better than Quinn.

Watt is not better than Dlaw. Yes he's better than quinn.

You're acting like I said he's a bad player lol.
