Yeah but thanks to Jerry's coddling, at least the players still feel like champions....and act that way.

I didnt want to pay Cooper at all...

However, I'm not entirely sure how not a single snap has been taken, yet it's considered a problem.

At least give them the opportunity to fail.

I wouldn’t have paid Cooper but that’s just me. Don’t think he’s worth anywhere near what they have him. I think they paid because if they didn’t they’d have egg on their face due to the spent 1st rounder.

Just MHO.

What about the teams that didnt win last year and didnt get any better at all due to no cap space?

They in the clear?

Wow this is garbage. Awful.

The only issue they have cap wise is if Dak can't carry his cap weight. In that I mean he has to play big in those must win games. He has to make the plays in the 4th qtr. He can be a bus driver for the first 45 minutes but in the 4th qtr he better be ready to pull one out of his hat.

I think good writers do their homework on actual cap and contract numbers before they write articles about it. But funny how rarely it happens.

Anyone unsure can feel free to check and do the homework for themselves:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cap/2021/

This team is in fine cap shape, both today and for the foreseeable future.
Agree not a cap problem but a GM problem. We don't have a strategy.

I think the depth issue and particularly young, talented depth is where my concern is. 3 years ago we had really nice talent on their rookie deals. That is where every team wants to be. Now with poor drafting we have two Players who fit this criteria. Gallup and LVE ( who has serious injury concerns).

We are getting back to the point where we are very top heavy. A concern since very few players who have big contracts outplay their $. Young, talented and cheap players are probably the most important assets in the league ( after a star qb] and Dallas has very little of that right now.

losing Jones and Quinn hurt us, but I would have been more upset if we signed either to big deals. But our talent base is deteriorating. The next two drafts are so important to this franchise. If they don’t have A drafts, this may be a full rebuild soon.
Well said. Exactly what I was thinking. Our next 2 to 3 drafts are so important. We can't keep missing on high round picks. Must hit "A's" on these next few drafts.

Not the best article, I see the premise the author started with - i.e. big salaries for a top heavy team. But yeah, didn't really do his homework. The Dallas front office has known and planed for this year for awhile now. They knew they had 2-3 big contracts to do , as well as several middle of the road contracts.
I agree they have been diligent in making sure they had plenty of resources available, this year and in future years. Im not worried in the slightest about our cap.
But.
I am somewhat disappointed in how they have squandered that cap this year.
Now, if they can finally get a deal done with Dak, and sooner rather than later, it will free up a "**** ton" of money to fill out this roster, and really fill the holes that we currently still have. If as projected Dak signs, either a 4, 5, or 6 year contract it frees up close to 20 million of dead money currently held for if he plays on the tag. Also, would soften the blow of Fredericks cap hit - as unpredicted as that was - and again, why they have been as frugal recently as they have, you just never know when things like this may pop up.
That would get us someone like Griffen, Maybe another corner, maybe another safety or WR. Thus making the draft purely BPA.
And next years draft looks like we will have a plethora of draft picks, and more money to play with. Sign Dak, Sign Poe, sign whoever the hell they need and just get on with it.
Virus permitting ….
Good post.

Two crushing misses in recent drafts really hurt. Taco and (thus far) Hill. We haven’t had great draft success since 2016, and last year’s draft was nearly a total non-factor, save for a backup tailback.

That needs to improve and fast.
Exactly. Well stated, Stasheroo.

I guess the whole point is Garrett and his staff did less with more rather than the opposite.

We have known this for quite some time, but Jerry had his ultimate hand picked puppet in place.

A real coach probably would have gotten us much closer, but we will never know.

Its Jerry's toy. He played with it the way he wanted.

And he comes back for more. Remember when he told us all what an advantage that was?

The Cowboys May Have Spent Themselves Into a Bad Situation

After years of getting great offensive production at a low cost, Dallas had to shell out this offseason—and it’s come at the expense of depth and defense

There are plenty of memories from Jason Garrett’s time with the Cowboys. There was the stretch when Dallas lost a playoff spot to a division rival in the final week of the season three years in a row. Twice. Dallas had a promising season end with a devastating playoff loss to the Packers. Twice. Garrett wasted the prime years of Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, and DeMarcus Ware, and when he stumbled onto their replacements with Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper, and DeMarcus Lawrence, he failed to capitalize on that group’s potential too. But mostly Garrett will be remembered for the clapping, which inspired his nickname and sealed him as the emblem for the Cowboys’ failings, a real-life “this is fine” meme.

When Cowboys owner Jerry Jones finally fired Garrett in January (after a lengthy delay), he replaced him with Mike McCarthy, the coach of those Packers teams that ripped out Dallas’s heart. McCarthy’s first words as Cowboys head coach in his introductory press conference immediately set him apart from his predecessor.

“It is great to be here,” McCarthy said. “I’m having a moment here because I don’t know where the hell to put my hands.”

The move from the Clapper to a coach who doesn’t know what to do with his hands is a perfect metaphor. In truth the Cowboys have tied one of McCarthy’s hands behind his back. Jones and his son Stephen, the pair who runs the team and makes front-office decisions, hired McCarthy to win a Super Bowl. But the Joneses are giving McCarthy many of the same stars Garrett coached while they were on cheap contracts after the Joneses have paid them top dollar. Whereas Garrett oversaw rosters teeming with talent and value, McCarthy is getting less of each and being asked to do more.

It doesn't look pretty. Welcome more cap hell...:banghead:

What say you?

I do not buy into any of this - so many ways to work around the cap and the new contract made it even easier - Dallas is still in good shape. Just need to draft good

Check..

Check

and triple check.

Just look at KC.

They win with Mahomes young and in his rookie deal.

Once his deal and others get redone in the next few years..

they are going to struggle.

I wrote a thread today that critizes the salary cap as the problem.

Players anymore do not play for the sake of the game and winning.

It's to be the highest paid at your position and polish your brand.

It's driving everything and I now watch college games 3 to 1 over pro games.

I prefer players playing for their educations and their pride than pros playing for their next Maserati.

It's getting so the pro game is about social protests and politics from the first commercial on.

You have to choose your own filters but mine are getting thicker and thicker anymore.

On defense the Cowboys have lost Byron Jones, Robert Quinn and Jeff Heath. They have gained Gerald McCoy, Dontari Poe and Ha Has Clinton-Dix. That
s probably no worse than a wash, and free agency isn't over, and the draft hasn't occurred, so I think it's pretty premature to suggest the defense is going to suffer. I doubt the defense will suddenly become top 5, but it can be improved.

Yeah playing 20/20 is always tricky, but if you could just go back and pick Watt and your highest rated safety last year, this team would be in a much better spot and could use resources in different areas.

I don’t want to be all doom and gloom, because things change quick in today’s nfl. Two good drafts could set us up quickly. But they need to hit on these.

also I don’t expect the NFC east to be as poor as it has been so I don’t believe there will be 3-4 easy wins we can count on.

In my opinion, odds for a successful draft have greatly improved based on the people who have been removed from the equation. Turning things over to coaches these past few years has proven disastrous.

I'm of a different mindset and I'm not all that worried. Lots of changes going on in the rest of the division, and I'm confident in the fact that the Cowboys corrected their most serious issue in sub-par coaching. We won 5 of 6 games last year and don't see the rest of the division being appreciably better. I like our chances.
