You need a mix buddy. This team was Sorely lacking on the defense side for veteran leadership. NOt that Aldon will provide that. But the others will.

Was he bad in the locker room? I mean, just because he had problems off the field doesn't mean he did on the field.

With Aldon Smith agreeing to a contract, he is the fourth former first-round pick the Cowboys have added in free agency so far, joining Gerald McCoy (2010), Dontari Poe (2012)and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (2014). Smith was the seventh pick in the 2011 draft. The Cowboys are following philosophy they have held over years in bringing in players who at one time teams liked greatly. Smith is a risk but likely mitigated by the financial commitment.

I think Aldon is a low risk long shot and is not a progress stopper or will stop the team from drafting a player at his position.

His only issue was availability.....other than that dude is a premier pass rusher

4 years out of the league is tough though

hope he does good things here

Do you not understand why a player who has been out of the league five years getting $4M is surprising? Everyone else seems to understand.

Reportedly, 0 gtd, 2mil salary, 2mil incentives.

He only gets 2 if he makes it to the season. He only gets 4 if he makes incentives. And if he makes them, we're set for a comp pick the following year.

I don't care who is surprised about what. Feelings are not an argument.

No risk, all upside contract. Nothing not to like.

How old is he now?

I believe elsewhere in this thread, somebody posted that he's 30. But it isn't really the age that matters. It's the wear and tear. Smith has played nearly five seasons, so he should have plenty of tread left. Plus, having cleaned up his life, we might get the best version of Smith. It's just the time off that's a concern, which is the reason we got him primarily for incentives.

Because it directly impacts what they do at the position. Meaning if no Gregory or Smith were available the Cowboys would have to find a real option.

Is that cool? Let me know if I can still feel this way.
Brother Risen,, you can feel however you want,, that's why I always give you likes... :)
But what your missing is the fact that having Gregory on this roster does not inhibit this franchise from doing whatever they want at the position, still.
Im not trying to butt heads with you, but having options is a part of the evaluation process,, it sucks cutting down to the 53, but sucks less with limited dead cap hit.
Neither cost a red cent, so chill out man.

So we lose a legit player in Quinn, our best pass rusher by far last year, and our response is to count on two guys who hope to be reinstated this year.

Quality front office work being done down there in Frisco.

Should we rely on a guy who got busted for roids? Who is to say Quinn isn't still juicing? Or won't be back to juicing with the Bears?

So I guess the Mike McCarthy had nothing to say about it? Just Jerry rolling snake eyes again? Oh wait Mike McCarthy brought Tomsula into the fold and he more than likely had positives on Aldon Smith. This looks like a collective management and coaching decision getting Aldon Smith on board.

I don't think I insinuated that. I think this is completely on McCarthy and Tomsula. Jerry is just an easy sell when it comes to second-chance players. I personally don't mind that. You win some and you lose some when you take risks.

I love a good story and redemption sequel. Even better because he is not a JG type of guy. For the last couple of years I've been begging this team to sign some tough and fundamentally sound players. I'm not going to complain now because at least the new coaching staff is doing "SOMETHING".

It like the old saying: Nothing happens until something moves. Well friends, this coaching staff is moving. The only thing that would shock me is if they signed Abi Masatora as a 1 technique. But seriously, I like the fact that they are turning over every stone. It never hurt to look. Aldon Smith could probably give more or the same as a 1 DE draft pick for a minimum of 1 year.

Risen beat me too it, but we have Gregory, Aldon, Crawford, Armstrong and whoever else trying to man the RDE side. 2 we are hoping Roger is in a good mood for old jerrah for trying to run him out of town to reinstate. Ok then.

I am still processing this.

Aldon Smith was a beast in his first three seasons and then the wheels started to come off for him. His last two seasons, he wasn't good but he also was in a downward spiral that eventually ended with him out of the league.

He's 30 yrs old and hasn't played football in nearly five years. That's also time that he hasn't had the wear and tear on his body.

Will he still have the strength and burst that made him a great player? I don't know.

At the price he's signed- no guaranteed money, 2 million base salary with incentives that push to 4, it's a decent gamble. If he's not reinstated or cut in camp, the Cowboys are out little. If he makes camp, but he is simply a rotational player, then his 2 million doesn't prohibit or hurt anything. If he's good enough to earn the four million, it is likely a great signing.

There's no indication that this will affect how we draft at all.

And the money doesn't keep us from further addressing the position.

Can't see much to not like here.

Very well written and thought out sir.

Well he looked like the next great pass rusher 8 years ago. This is a very Cowboys esche type signing. Former 1st rounder as a reclamation project. Happy to take a flyer, RDE will be quite the experiment between Gregory and Smith.
