I don't care about 31 other teams. It doesn't cost anything to bring him in for a look.

Doesn’t say much for the organization to keep bringing players like this in. None of these type of players have ever panned out for the Cowboys. They’ve given us nothing but headaches. Jerry and Stephen must love distractions.

Even if Smith is reinstated there’s not going to be much of an offseason with everyone stuck at home for him to work off any of the rust from 4 years of inactivity.

It's super low risk. No guaranteed money, and to make the full $4 million he has to get 14 sacks. If he managed that i would be jumping for joy. If he doesn't make the 53 man roster he only gets $500k.

It's not a distraction.
If it works out then great.
If not, move on.

Anyone with the reputation and rap sheet he has is a distraction. He’s not going to work out. He doesn’t even have youth on his side.

No April fools here. Wow.

This is new Dline coach Jim Tomsula hire. Was his former coach all 4 years at SF.

2mill base salary if/when he is reinstated and then 2 mil in incentives.
Smith and those close to him claim he's turned it completely around with anew perspective.
Guess we'll see.

Can anyone name an NFL player who returned to the league after four years away from the game and had success? Smith was already in decline when he was booted from the league four years ago.

I think it is misguided to assume that Dez can still play. 31 other teams have passed on him. Why would we even take a flyer on a guy like that? A proven cancer. A baby on the sidelines.
I think the difference between your personal opinion and what other teams are thinking is in accurate. Keep in mind that after Dez got hurt he had a long recovery, plus mentally broken. I believe that this can really change you which I'm sure you can agree. The Saints were willing to give him a shot because it was a smart thing to do. He was a very talented player who lost some skills and his confidence. Much of his lack of confidence came from not getting on the same page with Dak as well as his riff with the Freckled Puppet Jason Garrett.

I think if you look at things objectively, Dez is in a head space right now where he wants to prove everyone wrong and he has most definitely been humbled. There is a chance that with a better offensive system, and a physically and mentally healthy Dez Bryant he could be a very good weapon. The Saints thought so, why not us?

This makes you hope for the man:

"There is beauty in the struggle," Smith wrote after the signing, via social media. "Life will always present us with tests. I've learned how to take a different perspective on the adversities of life. Instead of looking at life as a victim, I have embraced the journey as God has planned it, making exponential strides towards becoming a better man."

Plus, there's this:

The promising news is Smith has apparently not failed a test in "nearly 10 months," a source tells CBS Sports, so now it's simply a matter of keeping the proverbial car on the road. It's key to note this doesn't mean he failed tests in his four-year absence prior to 10 months ago, but instead once he decided he wanted back into the NFL, he was again subjected to testing -- having not failed any in nearly a year from that point forward.
All of a sudden Smith is the proverbial Rhodes Scholar, imparting pebbles of wisdom like Mr Miyagi. Believe me, I wish him well but it’s kinda hard to chew on at this point in time.

I don’t know about that. We have had a fair bit of success plucking dudes off the scrap heap and getting results
Lots of people bag on Jerry. It’s a meme. There is some good stuff from the front office but hell, some people didn’t even enjoy the three Super Bowls because of their love for Landry and it we win another super bowl there will be people who will continue to hate on him because of Jimmy

it’s a cant win situation for the team in many respects
That’s fair but this wildcat Jerry stuff hasn’t netted any tangible results in over 20 years. Allegedly he has little to nothing to do with the draft, FA etc but this has Jerry’s stink written all over it. This is why other fans laugh at us, Jerry always keeps the Cowboys relevant without producing results. The dog and pony show gets old after 2 decades.

Vick was gone for a while and came back better. Yes he was a QB but he played harder then anyone on the field .

After this. No one should have a problem giving Dez another shot.

Not necessarily true. Aside from the question of what kind of ability Dez might still have, would Dez sign a $4 million non guaranteed contract, and would he be happy being the #3 TE?

Vick was gone for two years not four years and he wasn’t in decline when he left. Smith only had 5.5 sacks the last two seasons he played. The Cowboys have never signed a player with a longer rap sheet than Smith. He may not even get reinstated.

I don't see any problem with being skeptical. He hasn't earned anyone's trust yet. The contract is reflective of that. He has a chance to either prove his word or prove he hasn't changed his behavior.

You have to wonder, though, if the drop-off wasn't due to his personal problems. If he's clean and sober, we'll find out whether he's able to overcome that four-year obstacle. The odds are certainly not in his favor.

Broaddus on theFan said from what he's heard if Aldon Smith gets cut before the season it will be because he no longer can do it. (Apparently people feel his off the field problems are not an issue anymore)
