Twitter: Cowboys Signing Aldon Smith to 1-yr/$4M Deal (must be reinstated first)

You have to wonder, though, if the drop-off wasn't due to his personal problems. If he's clean and sober, we'll find out whether he's able to overcome that four-year obstacle. The odds are certainly not in his favor.

I have yet to come up with any player who’s been away from the game for four years fighting personal problems who’s returned to make an impact. Plus Smith isn’t that young a player he’ll be 31 in September.

I don't think the list of players who attempted it is that long.

The age doesn't matter as much as the wear and tear, and his wear and tear isn't that bad. The question will be conditioning, stamina, etc. He has to get used to the game again and that might prove to be too difficult.

Vick was gone for two years not four years and he wasn’t in decline when he left. Smith only had 5.5 sacks the last two seasons he played. The Cowboys have never signed a player with a longer rap sheet than Smith. He may not even get reinstated.
Obviouisly the drop in sacks is a concern, but he was suspended for large parts of both of those seasons, and in his last season he didn't even have the benefit of a training camp with his new team.

Ultimately, as I understand it, the contract he got isn't guaranteed, so he can be let go without consequences if things don't work out. And, like you said, there isn't even a certainty the league will reinstate him.

He’s been away from the game too long battling personal problems. He won’t pan out. Book it!

It's kind of funny actually. We appear to be banking on two players who are both waiting for the league to let them play. I feel like Stephen told us where we were going a long time ago. He said way early on, we would be looking at the DL with our first pick.

That did stand out. And if it's the place that McCarthy works out, can we really trust reports about Smith being in great shape?

I got another one. Look at the report again.

Aldon Smith's daughter is 10 years old. What is a 56 year old man like McCarthy doing traveling halfway across the country to visit her? There has to be more to this story for everyone to be okay with this.

Not really, there's plenty of time up until the draft and the draft itself to get to a point where it would be accurate to suggest anyone is banking on a couple of "maybe's."
Both are essentially risk free.

10 you're sure?

Not necessarily true. Aside from the question of what kind of ability Dez might still have, would Dez sign a $4 million non guaranteed contract, and would he be happy being the #3 TE?
His performance and ability on the field will determine those things.

Don't forget also currently suspended and between the two, they've missed more games in the last 4 years then they've started or even played in.

Good luck to them.
I hope everything works out.
I'm not putting money down on anything so you get where I'm coming from.

I don’t think it influences one way or another if an elite DE falls.

But it does keep us out of a Taco situation where DE has to be the pick.
And I’d argue that K'Lavon Chaisson isn’t even elite. He could surprise but then again, anyone could
