Anyone know what the guaranteed money is?
Here's a break down of the deal according to Jeff Cavanaugh. This is almost a zero risk deal.

Base salary if he makes the team on opening day: $910k
Weekly paycheck if on active roster: Roughly $40k (x 17 weeks: up to $650k)
Incentives:
8 sacks: 500k bonus
10 sacks: +500K
12 sack: +500k
16 sacks: +500k

So a milly and a half IF he makes the team and lasts the entire year with incentives starting with 8 sacks.
I cannot complain.

The money is not the problem really. It's the idea that we sign this guy and don't go after other options. If the guy doesn't work out and you don't pay him much, how does that really help the team? We are basically in the same situation rather then improving a problem area. That's the real problem.
You have no idea what they are planning or not planning.

I doubt that signing a guy four years out of the league with all that baggage made everyone in the war room jump up and down and made Jerry scream out ”WE GOT US A WAR DADDY!!!”

so why did you whine about not going after other players because of this signing? signing him has nothing to do with pursuing other players.
I think way more misses then hits but it's possible. It's just not probably and I guess I prefer to play the odds rather then the long shots.

We have how many more years of Dak and this OL left? It is just crazy to me that we would take a flyer on a guy to produce at such an obvious need position when you know you only have some many shots left. IDK.........
but there is no risk?

He will receive $90,000 when he's reinstated and an additional $50,000 thirty days after, followed by a $100,000 payout when he reports to training camp

$100,000 more after he shows up for two preseason games and a final August payout of $100,000 at the end of the preseason

If Smith successfully reports to all of the above but fails to make the final roster, the Cowboys will only lose $440,000 total with the deal.

-- per Todd Archer of ESPN.

How is that jeopardizing the Dak/Zeke/O-Line window?

Nice follow up! I had the other numbers i posted from Cavanaugh's, but it didn't quite add up. There's the additional 440k that was missing.

Here's an Aldon Smith draft/highlight video for fun. It shows some of what he was back then, and as an added bonus, he kicks the crap out of Eli Manning for about half of it!

Enjoy!

I got another one. Look at the report again.

Aldon Smith's daughter is 10 years old. What is a 56 year old man like McCarthy doing traveling halfway across the country to visit her? There has to be more to this story for everyone to be okay with this.

I think it is saying Aldon Smith was visiting his daughter in LA, and also met with Mccarthy.

It's kind of funny actually. We appear to be banking on two players who are both waiting for the league to let them play. I feel like Stephen told us where we were going a long time ago. He said way early on, we would be looking at the DL with our first pick.
I could see D-Line easily, even with D-Law locked in long term and the signings of Poe and McCoy. I could also see CB.

It's as zero risk as it gets. All upside. The complaints about this can stop now.

Good Jerry.

But Aldon should fire his agent. He was robbed.

His performance and ability on the field will determine those things.
His performance on the field can't determine if he is willing to accept that kind of contract because he would have to sign a contract before he could get a chance to perform on the field, right? In any case, we don't know what he can do or what he would accept, so my point remains that we can't automatically say that by signing Smith we should be okay signing Dez.

Another RDT seems likely. McCoy and Poe are bridges, Hill is a so far disappointing development project, and Woods is a value play, not a talent play.

McCoy, Hill, Woods, Poe + high draft pick RDT.

Dez has the added complication that we won't be as ruthless toward him as Smith. Too much history.

I didn't pay attention to him after his problems, but his first two years in the league, he was the most dominant young edge player I've ever seen. Just extending and knocking Pro Bowl OTs a couple yards into the backfield. It looked like you made some overpowered guy in a video game.

At this point though, I expect he's more likely to crash and park his car inside AT&T stadium.
