Here's a break down of the deal according to Jeff Cavanaugh. This is almost a zero risk deal.

Base salary if he makes the team on opening day: $910k
Weekly paycheck if on active roster: Roughly $40k (x 17 weeks: up to $650k)
Incentives:
8 sacks: 500k bonus
10 sacks: +500K
12 sack: +500k
16 sacks: +500k

I think the difference between your personal opinion and what other teams are thinking is in accurate. Keep in mind that after Dez got hurt he had a long recovery, plus mentally broken. I believe that this can really change you which I'm sure you can agree. The Saints were willing to give him a shot because it was a smart thing to do. He was a very talented player who lost some skills and his confidence. Much of his lack of confidence came from not getting on the same page with Dak as well as his riff with the Freckled Puppet Jason Garrett.

I think if you look at things objectively, Dez is in a head space right now where he wants to prove everyone wrong and he has most definitely been humbled. There is a chance that with a better offensive system, and a physically and mentally healthy Dez Bryant he could be a very good weapon. The Saints thought so, why not us?

I’ll play along. The Saints took a cheap lottery ticket on Dez because they were desperate. The fact remains that Dez played very poorly since he signed his second contract with us, and that has not changed. He scorched the earth on the way out and burned bridges down on the way out.

I suspect that he was more of a problem behind the scenes than most people knew.

Is it plausible that Dez has been humbled enough to take a back seat and be a contributor? I don’t think so. Did Witten embrace a backup role last year? No. Too much ego involved. Dez will most likely always be the Dez that sees himself as in his prime. That’s why he never cared to learn to run a proper route.

hey Corso--- yeah its been almost 5 years since Aldon played a snap....the upside...no wear and tear from overuse in football....the upside...no guaranteed money.....the upside is Reggie White and Doleman of Vikings and Bruce Smith played late in their 30's and where very successful....and Smith did not rely on being super fast to begin with...so his understanding how to shed blockers and get to QB he still has in his head ( i would think? )....pair Smith with Gregory and I can
see cowboys getting back 11 sacks they lost losing Quinn....i dont see that possibility being impossible...downside now....how much did his over drinking and drug use ravage his body?...he is 30 and that is not too old....i think it was Riser who commented one name when this thread started.."Will McClay"......overall i think it is a very smart move by Dallas.....little downside and a lot of upside in potential....but percentages are not in Cowboys favor...but maybe they hit on this?

If you remove the 2014 season, when he was suspended nine games for violating the league’s substance abuse and personal conduct policies, Smith was arguably the best pass rusher the NFL had to offer from 2011-13, posting 42 sacks (second-most in the league during that span) and 231 total pressures.

As his run-ins with the law and NFL caused him to miss 16 of a possible 32 games from 2014-15, Smith’s productivity and effectiveness waned significantly. After averaging 14 sacks per season from 2011-13, Smith produced just 5.5 sacks in the 16 games he played with the 49ers and Oakland Raiders from 2014-15. But even at a reduced version of himself (he appeared a little less explosive during his stint in Oakland), Smith still generated a good deal of pressure over those two shortened seasons, posting 68 pressures in 16 games (4.25 pressures per game). For comparison’s sake, 4.25 pressures per game would have ranked first on the Cowboys’ defense last season, when Robert Quinn led the way with 4.07, according to Pro Football Focus.

I think (though it's really just an assumption) that it would be much tougher to put together a no guarantee type deal like this and have it be more than one year. I can't recall any '2 year prove it' deals.

They say everyone deserves a 2nd chance. Aldon probably has passed this sum but hopefully the 3rd or 4th time will be the charm. Or fifth???Either way it's a no risk deal for Dallas and hopefully a spring board for Aldon to become a great player again and citizen.

Another RDT seems likely. McCoy and Poe are bridges, Hill is a so far disappointing development project, and Woods is a value play, not a talent play.

I always like to go in with some high hopes, but it is mitigated by the circumstances.
It would be really great if this signing works out.

All I can say is Smith must have looked good in his private workout to get chance at $4 mill contract after being out of football 5 years. Dallas is really only on hook for 2 million as rest is incentives. If Gregory & Smith truly have healed themselves and are all about football that could be interesting tandem to watch this year. I am optimistic one of them puts up good sack numbers.

Honestly, unless they can get some clarity on Kinlaw's knee, they may pass on him, especially if Henderson is there.
