Not long ago, the Cowboys had to address the defense. Now we are talking WR and C. How quickly things change.

I still think they need a dominant DT. If Brown or Kinlaw is available, he has to be the guy. If not one of them, the take Henderson.

But if these guys are all gone but Ruggs or Jeudy is there, how can they not consider taking him? They need a slot receiver and both of these guys will be very effective there.
Lol, they just have alot of needs

I can see us taking a WR in the 1st round if one of the top 3 fell to us. Otherwise I don't see us taking a WR until 3rd at the earliest. Our needs at CB and DE are too glaring.

This is just a bad take. it's common but bad.
You can go back through any of the last 5 drafts and I can show WRs better in round 2 or 3 then in 1.
Lamb is my WR1 but he's at most a hair better than WR5.
And as WR3 that hair is non-existent.

Using 17 on a WR3 with Cooper and Gallup set in place for 2-3 years would be a criminally bad use of resources.

Ruggs is an elite weapon but he isn't a very good WR. He's basically a healthier Tavon Austin. Avoid at all costs at 17.
I agree.
Not even taking into account the discussion on how good the top WRs are......WR3 is not your top WR anyway.

All positions are important, but WAY off base if anyone thinks WR3 is a most pressing need.

In fact, if ranking most import position from 1 thru 22, starting with QB as 1....WR3 (not WR1 or even WR2, but WR3) is very near the bottom--in the 16 to 22 range

My favorite Hope is Shenault makes it to round three with his injuries. I would be willing to trade up for him.

someone posted about Bryan Edwards earlier in week and I liked his highlights. Big, physical player.

I don’t know a lot of the deeper prospects but Peoples-Jones from Michigan was once the top er recruit and Collin Johnson from UT once looked like a future star. I would gamble on someone like that later in draft.

KJ Hill, Mims, Pittman, Proche, Duvernay, Reagor, Shenault were the names he mentioned.

He said we probably won't take a WR in the first 3 rounds because of how deep it is and proceeds to mention mainly guys who will be taken in the first 3 rounds lol.

Here's the question I'm thinking........which one could play both, slot AND outside. I'm guessing the higher we select one the more likely they're expecting him to start or play a bunch.

True , but what if Lamb or Jeudy are sitting pretty at 17
Assuming nobody else also slipped that you have ranked them in the same tier as those guys you either
1) take the player!
or
2) try like heck to trade down if you get good value

What you don't do is take a player in the clear next tier down in that situation.

The list was basically all the Dallas area guys they could interview without costing them a visit.
This is not impressive sleuthing work, lol.

The Dallas area is very rich in WR talent for this class and for the next few years as well.
Texas HS have been heavy passing oriented so are producing lots of top WR talent.
6'2" guys that used to only play HS basketball can now make it to the NFL with football.

A point I'd like to make to yall.

In 2018, we waited until the third round to draft Michael Gallup.

We had Allen Hurns, Terrence Williams, Cole Beasley, Deionte Thompson, & Tavon Austin as our receiver group. We now have Amari Cooper as a #1 & Michael Gallup as a #2.

You may want to be prepared to be disappointed.

If a player falls there is usually a reason.
WR is loaded this year and scouts will have different flavors than fans.
I'd rank them something like:
WR1 Lamb --Competitive guy who attacks the ball and then makes people miss.
WR2 Jefferson --Physical with great hands
WR3 Jeudy --Precision route runner. Ready day 1.
WR4 Reagor --High ceiling. Plays as fast as anyone in the class and brings skill to handle the speed.
WR5 Aiyuk --Big play guy. Elite Special teamer. Still a bit raw but tools galore.
WR6 Pittman --Big, tough WR that play possession role but hurt teams who sleep on him coverage.
WR7 Higgins --A lot like Metcalf last year. Too much to handle outside one on one but needs those single match ups to win consistently.
WR8 Mims --Less polished version of Higgins.
WR9 Ruggs --Fastest guy in class. More a change up player than every down WR imo. Electric w ball in his hands.
WR10 Shenault --Has some bad habits but wasn't in a machine of an offense like some other guys.
WR11 Proche --Caught everything thrown his way and consistently got open. Lots to like.
WR12 Duvernay --Elite physical specimen. Built like a track star. UT tweaked offense every year he was there probably limiting his numbers. Likely a better player as a pro than in college.

End of day I think any of these 12 could come in and be WR3 for Dallas and get you 600 yards receiving next year as a rookie on about 60 targets. That'd be a slight bit better than Gallup as a rookie.
Pick 17 might net you another 1 catch per game and 14-15 yards. I am not ready to make that investment given I can definitely reduce the other team's output far more with a solid defender at pick 17.

If a player falls there is usually a reason.
...........
Sometimes the wrong reason
Derwin James in 2018 fell to 17 for no good reason, for example

But as I said, with this deep WR class, I'd try to trade down in that situation if I got a good deal. But if I didn't, I'd take the player.

Then again, maybe Dallas doesn't even have Lamb or Jedy tiered separated from a bunch of other players that would also be on the board. Different story then.

That's one of the biggest mysteries I'm excited to find out about.

Does MM prefer the traditional slot type like a Randall Cobb? Or a guy with some flexibility that can play all 3 of the positions like a Jordy Nelson? I'm hoping for the latter.

We have a coach who really values the position so I have hope that we'll address it on day 2 or early day 3 at the latest.
