And they made a offer before wentz got a deal. They offered less. So when Daks agent saw what he was offered and what wentz got then things probly went south for a while. We let him play out his rookie deal and goff gets even more. I never really took what wilson got into it. But now it looks like Dak will get Wilson money. This is exactly the way I wanted things to go. Dak was playing for peanuts, as some would say, so show him your appreciation by signing him early. The deal would have been team friendly back then and I'm sure Dak would have loved the pay raise.
All he has to do is renegotiate during his fourth season and threaten to sit out his fifth.
Sign the damn offer
I like the notion of doing a 5 year deal with the final year voided should he hit certain milestones. Dak would be able to take advantage of the market which would including a new TV contract agreement with the league increasing players salaries. He wants to bet on himself this would be a way of doing it while also giving the Cowboys more flexibility in managing of the contract
That's a terrible idea to me. You give away all control if you do that. Either you pay Dak and CAA whatever they want at the next negotiation or you lose any ability to recoup on investment. Why in the world would anybody do that?
I like because it puts Dak in a situation where he either accomplished major goals to have the final year voided. If he hits set goals then it benefits the team as much as it does him. If Dak fails within 3 to 4 years the Cowboys would still have an out as all contract do and would be able to move on. I don't think Cowboys nor Dak want to go the path of Franchise Tag and for Dallas the only reason they are using it was to extend the time to get a deal worked out.
Does it? What's the downside of simply missing the 5th year and holding out for a new contract?
What about the following:
1. QB market has changed from the time of Cousins etc.
2. Salary cap falls - due to coronavirus disruption.
3. There may be no 2020 season, or a reduced length season.
At the moment, the risk meter is saying sign any reasonable offer.
The only QB that deserved the gtd money is Wilson. Goff somewhere between Dak and Mayfield, Carson is between Dak and Tannehill. But neither "deserved" their guaranteed money. And the rumored offer isn't reasonable when you talk guaranteed figures.
Wilson: 4 years, $140M ($107M guaranteed)
Goff: 4 years, $134M ($110M guaranteed)
Wentz: 4 years, $128M ($108M guaranteed)
Dak: 5 years, $175M ($105M guaranteed) - rumored and $175M based on $35M yearly average
If Dak accomplished a goal such as leading this team to a SB Dallas will be more than willing to pay. If he fails Dak will likely be looking at backup QB money elsewhere. It is not just Dak with a new TV contract due in 2022 and reports being that you could see the NFL getting double what they are currently getting from networks these deal we see today will be fairly modest.

There absolutely was discussion from the perspective of the team. For example, if they have Dak on the franchise tag for two years they would be paying him a higher annual salary than under a 4 year contract, but without the control over the player a 4 year contract allows. Also that salaries are only going up with new TV conracts becoming a factor and with Watson and Mahomes due to negotiate new deals in a year, and if they don't sign Dak now, they could be faced with negotiating next year in a market that is paying QB's over $40 miilion/year. That's not to say Dak would get as much as Mahomes, but as the top contracts higher and higher, all other contracts get pulled up to another level as well.I see nothing in that article that explains why the Cowboys shouldn't stick to their guns here. The entire part, that I read, was written from the perspective of the player and agent. I guess I'm still where I was previously. Tag him and if he doesn't sign a deal, trade him and get value. Take what you make through trade and get serious about drafting a QB. Trevor is out there next season.
I agree, but if he doesn't, what then? The other thing is that there is no guarantee what the NFL will look like in 4 or 5 years. This latest stretch should teach us that. Lastly, none of that helps us sign players or win. Also doesn't protect us from CAA. No, that's a bad deal to me. I'm not for anything that puts us at a disadvantage with those guys.

But what happens to all the prorated bonus money when that 5th year is voided? It all hits the cap at once? That may work for some deals but I doubt for mega deals. You could have $10-12 million unexpectedly hit the cap when that year is voided and then you have to sign him to a new deal on top of that? I’d go with the 4 year deal if he will give some concession on the $$$ to help with the cap. Another option is to offer an escalation for the 5th year that would increase his salary that year if they win a Super Bowl or if he wins a MVP during years 1-4.
