Payton took a QB under 6' tall that can't run and made him the
most prolific passer in NFL history.
The Mike McCarthy/Aaron Rodgers tenure was quite safely more successful then Payton and Brees over the same period of time, with more wins, playoff wins, playoff appearances, division titles, etc.

In addition, Mike McCarthy completely overhauled Aaron Rodgers mechanics, something Payton never did for Brees, who was already a good player before ever even playing for Payton.

Now just think if Payton had coached Rodgers and Brees was with McCarthy.
Brees was kicked to the curb by his original team.
New Orleans signed him after Miami said no thanks.

I'd say Big Mike and Payton are essentially even as head coaches.

But why would you assume that Payton is any better of a QB guru then McCarthy? McCarthy is the one who completely overhauled and changed his guys mechanics, in addition to Brees being good before ever meeting Payton.

I dont see why they would be even when McCarthy's tenure with Rodgers is simply better then Payton/Brees over that same span of time. *shrugs*

The list was Best Head Coaches.
I guess you could make a QB guru list, if you like.
Payton has been robbed of a couple title games here recently.

I like them both. Not knocking either one.

Okay. And McCarthy/Rodgers tenure was better then Payton/Brees tenure over the same time period. So why would they be even? Unless you think Rodgers is significantly better then Brees, and while I would say he is better, the gap isn't significant.

Payton lost a single title game controversially, likewise, his sole title game victory was always quite controversial, so that is kind of a wash.

You called Payton a discount McCarthy.
Two years ago rumors were swirling that Payton could possibly
leave NO and become the new Cowboys HC.
Had that happened, fans would've been doing cartwheels.

Payton went 4-0 with Tedy Bridgewater. McCarthy's teams struggled when
Rodgers was out.

Like I said, I like them both. I can live with you not agreeing with me.

Two coaches that will make that list next year are
the Bills Sean McDermott and the Colts Frank Reich.

Does anything you just said overrule the fact that the McCarthy/Rodgers tenure was clearly better then Payton/Brees over the same timespan?

Bridgewater was a better, more expensive backup QB then GB ever had. I dont really think that reflects upon Payton, but even if it does, isn't even close to enough to overrule what I just said.

Sure. I agree. Fans would have loved Payton. And according to the results, they should love McCarthy even more.

Based off his work as HC of Packers, where would you rank new Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy among
the better Head Coaches in the NFL ?
i can kinda see it like this:

1 Bill Belichek Pats

2 Andy Reid KC Chiefs

3 Sean Peyton Saints

4 Pete Carroll Seahawks

5 Mike Tomlinson Steelers

6 Jon Harbaugh Ravens

7 Mike McCarthy Cowboys ?

8 Doug Pederson Eagles

9 Kyle Shanahan Niners

10 Sean McVey Rams

Honorable Mention: Mike Zimmer, Vikings .....Mike Vrabel Tenn

Interestingly all top 6 HCs have so-called elite QBs ( except Belichick ). How good are they with a say average QB? This is why I think Shanahan is ranked way too low.......he should at least be in the top 5 IMO. As for MM, to ask how much is his success was Rogers is a fair question but he's def top 10 IMO.

They both have ONE SB ring.
One was suspended for a year.
One was fired in midseason and sat out the next year.

I've said several times I like them both.
I didn't rank them. I don't recall claiming one was better than the other.
You did that.

One QB attributes his success to his HC.
One QB ran his HC out of town.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree.

I love the coaching staff Big Mike has put together.
He should also receive credit for the moves made this offseason.
The season, on paper, looks very promising.

-Peyton has had similar success with a hall of fame QB and more control in selecting players
-I believe Tomlin hasn't won since legendary DC LeBeau left the franchise
-Andy Reid can be lumped in that Peyton category
-Pederson's offense hasn't been the same after his Reich left for the Colts
-Shanahan/McVey are up incomers that haven't won yet

-I would put Harbaugh/Carroll ahead of the pack, outside of #1.
-The likes of Peyton, Reid and MM all should be ranked the same as they all won 1 title with elite QB's.

I’d take anyone in your top-12 over him with the possible exception of Tomlinson, who I’m not a huge fan of, but who’s comparable to McCarthy.
Yea, I’m not sure I’d take McCarthy over any of them. Although I’m not that sold on Pederson. He is looking more like a one year wonder.

But if he can take this franchise further than the last 5 Cowboy head coaches then he might be elevated closer to top 5 in this group.

McCarthy is hard to judge.
He coached 13 years and had two HOF QBs the whole time, yet only has won one Super Bowl.
Then again, that could be said for Sean Peyton as well.

isn't Russell Wilson also in the elite class of QB's who have won a SB as well ?
Or do you still have people that consider him a " bus driver" managing QB ? o_O

I have Carroll above with Harbaugh, as they have been to multiple super bowls and have rings. Carroll does have an elite QB, but Harbaugh never did.

The Favre that McCarthy inherited was absolutely awful.
