After this Mess of contract negotiation, will a team be willing to pay Dak?

If the guy down the road is going to pay you 25-30 million more over 4 or 5 years, that’s where you go.

Since when is “ all you need “ a measurement in professional sports “. Or any profession.

We have to stop thinking from a fans perspective with the envy of money they make.
I'm not. I'm thinking from a reasonable human being perspective.

30 mil makes a reasonable human being just as happy as 35. So, you go where you'll find the most happiness.

Yes, perhaps if you could maintain that level of earnings. And it was more of a lifetime decision.

But if you knew your earning potential was limited to 5 years for example you attempt to maximize . Cause when it’s over, it’s over.

And who’s to say you wouldn’t be as happy with another team. Playing football is football. Winning just makes it more fun.

Very true. I don't think Dak is happy here.

Disagree about maximizing. 100 mil guaranteed is retirement money.

Playing professional sports isn’t a reasonable human being experience anymore than an actor in a film or TV and an artist touring.

It’s entertainment at the highest level in sports. It can end at any time.

For some reason fans take issue with Athletes making tens and hundreds of millions but not Actors making undress of millions in film making or TV . And what about an Artist making hundreds of millions on a tour?

I think it’s probably cause many fans have played sports at some level and don’t hold their talent level as in high esteem as an actor or artist. But it’s all entertainment. A show.

I couldn't care less how much other people earn - that's their business.

But there is a salary cap and how much each player earns contributes towards a team's chances.

If there was no salary cap people wouldn't give two hoots. You make it sound as though people hate their jobs and are envious of anyone making a lot of money especially sportsmen who only entertain after all. When in reality they are the elite in their sport and most think fair play to them.

The money in professional sports has turned many fans off. My uncle RIP who played was completely turned off by the money of this era. His first contract offer was $10,000 a year. And lost interest in the professional game falling back to exerting his energy and interest in college football.

I recall when Staubach retired in 1980 as the highest paid player in Cowboys history making 200 grand my uncle and father saying how he deserved more. That they earned more and wouldn’t suit up for that. The game changed shortly after that in the 80’s as the TV revenue grew significantly.

I doubt we have many fans saying their QB’s deserve more now. And wouldn’t suit up . It is what it is. We didn’t have billionaire owners back then either. But fans still want to disconnect the big money to these players. I’d argue fans haven’t come to grips that’s it’s not just about the game and winning anymore

There is a segment of fans who are envious .

Your point is valid regarding the Cap and why tough decisions must be made. And if Dak over valued himself and we refuse to meet those demands then we will have to deal with the effects and impacts .

But the Cowboys knew this deal with Dak was on the block. They didn’t draw a line in the sand with Zeke last year or Cooper this year. They’d assured us they had enough Cap space to get everyone signed.

Cowboys have made their choices where their priorities rest. And they’ll ultimately be judged if their investments and evaluations were in the best interest of the team.

Ultimately you feel like the front office had to resign Cooper. They gave up a first and he played very well.

If I was sold on Prescott then the QB is more important so objectively one of the others along with Byron Jones should have been sacrificed.

Personally I think the contract for Elliott isn't horrific as he can be moved on in two years without much damage to the cap and I still rate him as a quality back regardless.

I rate Lawrence as well. Some people only focus on his sack numbers which were down last season but he's excellent against the run and I think his presence helped Quinn rack up his sacks. Crawford also facilities his game and I think he wasn't really 100% at any point last season after the injury. I expect a big season from Lawrence.

Given how strong the WR class was in the 2020 draft then if the front office wanted Prescott at all costs then it was Cooper who I would have let walk even though it meant wasting a first round pick. A hard painful decision as he seems to love playing for the Cowboys but if you are sold on Prescott and you are willing to overpay him then that's the price. Byron Jones and Amari Cooper.

But the front office thought they could sign all of them apart from Jones and if the reported offer for Prescott was true then it should have been enough really.

Unfortunately in the end it wasn’t enough for Prescott. And that throws a wrench in all of it. And why it makes us wonder if we didn’t read Dak correctly . Or if we should have caved in for a couple more million a year.

After what we know now Id probably agree Cooper could have been the odd man out especially since we used our #1 on Lamm.

Or we can just move on from Dak if we don’t think he’s worth it. But we must be prepared for the effects and impacts it could have while we obtain and or develop another QB. And our ownership will be held responsible for how these decisions impact the results moving forward.

I’m not really taking sides. My issue is to hold our ownership accountable for the decisions and the impacts thereof.

That's what a lot of fans found annoying. The front office are trying to put together a Superbowl roster. Yes they paid other guys first but the reported offer for Prescott was on the face of it decent and it meant Prescott kept all the weapons around him.

My understanding is that they had agreed in principle the money with Prescott last season after a game or two in to the season. Whilst the final negotiations were being agreed Prescott and the new agent rejected the offer after looking good beating up on bad teams. I could be wrong but that is how I understand it - I don't know how much that initial agreed figure was supposed to be.

The point is the people continually criticising the front office for not agreeing the Prescott contract sooner - well they had been negotiating for a long time and they thought it had been agreed early last season. And they weren't being tight with money as they were trying to keep the strongest roster together within the cap. They didn't want to lose any other blue chip assets other than Byron Jones. They didn't want to lose Elliott or Cooper especially to the Commanders.

The reported offer for Prescott wasn't exactly derisory either.

It's an interesting point in that people may have misread Prescott. I genuinely think the front office were very confident he would accept their final offer of a long term contract. Perhaps he isn't happy with other guys being paid first, he might feel disrespected and I get the impression he overates himself which isn't always bad as you need a very confident QB just that it hurts in contractual negotiations! I was shocked that he didn't sign a long term contract if I'm honest.

The offer was fair but it doesn't matter if he chooses not to sign.

In the end we didn’t get a deal done assuming that’s what we wanted.

And if we were only a couple million apart it could come back to haunt us. Those are the risk we take. The risk Dak takes is important to but once he leaves it’s not our problem .

Finding another QB is our problem so we dont waste the investments we signed to help prop him up.

It will be interesting to know how far apart we really were. If it’s only a couple million like from 35-37 then we will look foolish if Dak leaves next year and we struggle finding a replacement.

Im never shocked by what these high profile athletes do. There’s a reason he hadn’t signed the offer . He wasn’t happy with it. Doesn’t really matter why. And doesn’t appear we ever made an attempt to improve the offer to meet his demands.

Personally I don’t think he’s worth the 33-35. But more importantly what are our other options . We need a QB. This team is built to contend now but can’t without a QB. If the Cowboys misread Dak then it could foil our chances of consistently contending the next few years while we look for or develop another QB.

Irrelevant.

Disagree. The contracts offered easily met his demands. Logic and facts point toward him not wanting to be here.

Disrespected? Geez, I hope he's not that much of a juvenile.

I think it's a very tiny segment, and is overblown by people on this site.

You might be right. Definitely not for what we offered.

We obviously didn’t make an offer he couldn’t refuse. Lol

Definitely appears he didn't intend to sign this contract. Maybe we didn’t make an offer he couldn’t refuse ?

Im not sold on Dak although he could be enough so I’m in support of moving on if we have a plan to replace him without wasting time with the roster and investments we’ve made .

Maybe we go after Trevor next year in draft or ARod In FA. Those might be good Plan B’s.
