Dak vs. Trevor Lawrence is not an either-or choice

this doesnt matter because we arent going to get the #1 pick. We already(somehow) have 2 wins. And there is no way we could trade for the number 1 pick this year....

This Dak vs. Trevor Lawrence debate is starting among Cowboys fans. It is being presented as "If you have the chance, do you take Trevor Lawrence with a top 5 pick, or do you stick with Dak Prescott?"

The answer is: you do both.

Lawrence just turned 21. Dak is 27. When Dak is 32 or 33. at the end of whatever contract is being contemplated, Lawrence will be 25/26. There is enough of an age difference to make it worth the value.

If Lawrence comes in and quickly turns into an elite quarterback, then Dak becomes valuable trade bait. If Lawrence busts, we still have Dak.

People will create reasons that this won't be a thing, probably talking about "splitting the locker room" and so forth. But both Troy and Roger had to fight for their spot with genuine competition (or at least the perception of such).
It is not both. The value of either one OF these two would be ENORMOUS. I MEAN absolutely huge. Trade the pick or Dak and you're bound to land something absolutely huge.

So you want to commit not only $35M+ to Dak to be the starting QB but another $6-7M for Lawrence to be the back-up QB? So $40M+ committed to the QB position knowing that the salary cap may go down next season? Sorry but not a reality.

If Dallas holds a Top 5 pick next season and is determined to rebuild then you apply the non-exclusive franchise tag to Dak so he can shop elsewhere for the contract he desires and then negotiate with that team for draft pick compensation. Thereafter you draft a new young QB while then looking to add young talent on the OL and defense via the draft and free agency thanks to the money saved from Dak.

Just so long as it isn’t the Andy Dalton era

Agree with you on this. I love Dak but I just think Lawrence has a better skill set with good intangibles. And being on the rookie contract helps out since you can use the money to fix the defense that you have to pay Dak.
Like in 2015, when you earn a top 5 pick all bets are off. Hopefully this time we won’t draft a running back.

I think it would be crazy for any org to bench Lawrence for more than one season at most. In Dallas i would have Lawrence starting on day one.

I just fear Jerry is going to “Johnny Football” the choice though.

Personally I would take the younger guy at a lower salary for 5 years, but I wouldn’t expect him to win anything during his rookie contract. Team is a dumpster fire.

i don't know man. i get it, i really do, but the way this team has been run the past 4 years with a good qb on a rookie contract doesn't give me much confidence.....you put trevor lawrence on this team, and it might turn into a andrew luck/early retirement situation...Our defense needs to be completely overhauled and the OL may need addtional resources as well.
Anything is possible but I am sitting here watching the Chargers and I like their future with Herbert. Spend that 30 million on defense and we have a 5 year window. Lawrence could be Stafford, but you cannot pass that up.

Trevor Lawerence is a no brainer. Unless it comes out that he is a crack head or refuses to get a hair cut or something you gotta take him. Let Dak walk.

yea, but i also watched Sam Darnold earlier today and their future isn't looking good. i'd rather go with the QB we know we have than risk getting one of those and setting us back even further

Darnold is not close to prospect Lawrence is. Cleveland drafted Baker over him.

I’ll say this that if we are in the top 5 I hope we at least attempt to try to trade for Lawrence. I mean the Chiefs moved from 27 to 10 and gave up 2 1’s and a 3rd to get Mahomes. The only problem I see is who ever gets that pick is probably not going to give it up.

Exactly. The main perk of lawrence would be saving about 100 million over 4 years vs signing Dak. Can sign real defensive players instead of digging through the bargain bin. Keep Dak that 1st rounder can be traded down and your looking at total 3 or 4 day 1 defensive starters take in 2021 draft
Free agency in itself is bargain bin shopping lol.

That’s a terrible idea. The team is bad. A good QB still doesn’t make this team win. Look at Dak’s historic start to the season and we still only had one miracle win. If you pay Dak, you’re gonna be a bad team with a $45 million QB. You might win just enough games to not have great draft picks. If you draft Lawrence, you’re gonna be a really bad team for a few years, but by the time Lawrence reaches his potential, you should have a few draft picks and other young guys ready to bring the team to the next level. Look at how good the 49ers are from sucking for a few years. And they don’t even have a good QB. Imagine the 49ers with a good QB.

Keep Dak, use all the pics on defense. Don't overpay on defense for free agents who may pull a DLaw after getting paid and be mediocre..
