Kinda been over this. I think that the Cowboys never signed Cooper to a 22 mil deal, per year, so that they could pay him 22 per year the entire time. I think that they set up the contract so that they could get out of it by 21, 22 latest. I think that they drafted Lamb for a reason and you can't have three #1 quality WRs on a team for any long period of time. I think that the cap shrinking this year is going to drive decisions. I think that having to possibly put out a lot of money on a QB. I think that the same might have to happen for a starting LT. Same might have to happen for a lot of different positions. I think that NFL viewership is down this year considerably and we don't know if this is a trend or a short lived thing. I think that like the Salary Cap, people might be making a mistake to think that the next TV contract is going to expand available revenue.
Basically a lot of factors come into play here but all of it revolves around the cap. Teams, IMO, are going to skinny down their rosters. It may come down to who takes less to play. For example, the team may be trying to leverage salaries here. They might have set this up so that they can see which of these WRs might play for less money and based on that, might move on from the other. As I said, the team isn't keeping three #1 WRs. They won't be able to. Eventually, Lamb will develop to a point where he wants to take a bigger role. When that happens, who's going to step down to take a lessor role? The team will eventually have to move one of them and it will be the one who makes less money IMO. Now, that might be Gallup but I doubt it. I don't think Gallup is getting paid 22 a year and Cooper will if he is on the team. Cooper will be in his 7th or 8th season at that point. Gallup will be in his 4th or 5th. Gallup's trajectory will likely be heading into his peak, Coopers will be headed towards the end of his. If you look at it from the point of view of maximum value through the life of the follow on contract, I'm thinking that Gallup probably makes more sense. I think it would also be of value to look at what Gallup's numbers would project to if he got the number of targets that Cooper does, right now. Either way, this is about money.
