Would you have tanked for Ryan Leaf?

I understand what you are saying, but realistically every year there are fans (and teams) that fully believe in the top QB prospects and others that don’t and some will be right and some wrong ... everyone can’t be right.

Plus, realistically, how often does a QB of that caliber come along? It’s not realistic to assume any QB prospect coming out of college will reach that level. It can happen, but it will be rare.

That’s why a team has to think carefully before abandoning a guy that has proven to be a quality NFL QB. If they go that route they take the chance of getting the next Peyton Manning, and that obviously would be huge, but they also take the chance of getting the next Ryan Leaf or JaMarcus Russell or Marcus Mariota.

I’m not saying a team shouldn’t take the chance, just that it should only be after careful consideration. It’s not the easy no brainer some make it out to be.
Absolutely. I agree. Calculated risk.

He beat the Cowboys because we don’t have a defense and it’s gotten a lot worse since he beat us. It’s amazing Dak has had the success he’s had with the defenses we keep fielding every year. We have OL issues and a defense that needs to be rebuilt. Sam Darnold is an inconsistent QB. He had INT issues in college and it’s followed him to the pros. Real good QBs make their teams better. Darnold isn’t very good and the Jets will likely move on from him.

Jets scored 24 pts total:huh: and Prescott had 9 pts in 3 quarters of football.:banghead:
Prescott managed 13 pts in the 4th Q but once again a dollar and day short!!!!!
Man sell crazy elsewhere as we have eyes and half a brain lol....

I have an 18 inch scar on my right ankle. Had a complete reconstruction and ligament transplant with 3 titanium screws. Took me 6 months to rehab and it did not hold me back a bit. I'm sure Dak will be 100%.
It was the Menudo

I'm against trading down for the simple fact it never works out. I don't trade away from talent. If there's a guy I Want I take him. If there's a guy I for sure know when I can get later on the draft I do it. It worked with Fredericks but its left a bad taste in my mouth ever since we traded down from Stephen Jackson just to get a guy that plays the same position but who was inferior. Just a terrible way to go about that.

This team better not draft offense next year I don't care if its a linemen. UNLESS Tyron retires.
I know what you mean about not liking to trade down. Being realistic in my assessment of what we should do if our pick is too high for the level of defensive talent to justify such a high pick, but the risk of doing so though....

I don't understand why someone would want to lose on purpose to draft a player that is not proven. Could put us back another 10 years.......
Its because having Dak is like buying Coke at high price in the stock market and drafting Lawrence is like taking a chance on Amazon at great price. Your never going to get those big gains investing in dividend paying stocks like you will in growth stocks.

That's true and as another somewhat astute poster on this forum said to me you don't want someone that is only about 20 that can win against other 21-22 year olds. I get that. Because he is young we need to skip him and because he only won against other 21-22 year olds we need to skip him.

Understood.

That is an excellent point. Leaf was so highly thought of by all the draft gurus and sporting world and most thought he would be the 1st pick instead of Manning. Leaf was thought of more highly than Lawrence is now yet so many that suggest tanking to get a chance at drafting him just don't see that Lawrence could be another Leaf. I'm not saying he will be, only that he could be and then that pick continues to set back the defense.

Yeah I have no idea who they are even interested in but most mocks I’ve seen in the top 5 have about 3 quarterbacks, a lineman and a receiver going before a defensive player. To me that’s another where we will be picking. Outside of the top 5.

Dak had his chance with probably the best offensive roster in the NFL in the past years.
HE FAILED!
This is a game of inches and Dak comes up short unless it's the Giants or D.C.
Time to move on.....Things change.
Why do short guys always talk about inches?

The issue with tanking is not with the team but the integrity of the game and league.

It's one thing for losers to tank against each other, like the DAL/NYG, but what effect does that have on the good teams that are fighting for the playoffs and seeding?

What does that say to fans that paid damned good money to see their team play to win? That was a surreal picture in CIN last season with those fans actually cheering the other team and carrying those Burrow signs into the game.

I want the Cowboys to get the highest draft position possible because they need it with their management but to lose intentionally to get there? No, I am not on board with that. That doesn't speak to that team as much as the integrity of that franchise and the league that stands idly by and allows that to happen. NBA comes to mind, which is why I never watch them, never.

But I have no problem with fans wanting them to tank because this sport is all about winning, at this level that's all that really matters. If they feel losing now to win later is the best course, fine with me but still not OK for me. I can't root for that to happen on purpose and thankfully, my team is so bad, they don't have to tank.

30+ points per game is a failure of Dak and the offense? I guess whatever works for your narrative ...

We could cherry pick particular games from any QB to make them look bad. I notice you didn't cherry pick the 30+ points per game the team was scoring this year before Dak got hurt, and the severe dropoff since. Why? It doesn't fit your narrative.

Would you have traded Aldon Smith for a two 1st round picks?

Assuming there is no chance to win it all, or even half of it all, is playing rookies and other young guys over the regular starters considered tanking?

I say no if the intent is to either evaluate them or to get them valuable reps in real game action with the eye on next season and the draft. That is the way it should be approached.

Probably not going to win the battle but you're giving yourself a better chance to win the war.

The flaws with cherry picking actually are reality. Your commentary pretty much never is.
