I looked at that and their criteria for an “ok” QB is different than other sites. For example they labeled Quincy Carter and Charlie Batch as successful picks.

Carter had a winning record as a starter and Batch had a long career both as a starter and later as a backup.

That’s a good question. I’ve believed for years that the parts of a QB’s game that are undervalued are leadership, how well they play under pressure, what kind of team they were surrounded by. I believe both scouts and fans are over enamored with arm strength and athleticism and fail to see a college QB in context of the team they played for and how his play impacted that team.

For example, too many college QBs drafted early have been overvalued because of the team they play for. I always thought Tua was good, but he was constantly surrounded by NFL talent on those Alabama teams making him look a little better than he is. Contrast that with Mahomes, who because I’m a Texas Tech fan, I saw him play every game in college- he was great while being surrounded by almost zero NFL talent on below average Tech teams.

One thing that really helps college QBs get ready for the pros is simply experience as a starter. Look at Dwayne Haskins. Dude started like 15 games in college before being drafted in first round. Contrast that with guys like Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Baker Mayfield and Russell Wilson all started between 35 and 45 games in college. That makes a huge difference in being prepared to play in the NFL.

The reason I mention pressure- look at how QBs play under duress. Guys like Tua, Matt Jones and Trevor Lawrence rarely got pressured in college like they will in the NFL. Last year as a rookie, Justin Herbert was off the charts accurate under pressure. He showed that in college too. It’s easy to look great when no one is in your grill.

Finally, the leadership quality. Some QBs just have a special quality that cannot be tape measured. Joe Montana, Roger Staubach, Tom Brady, and Johnny Unitas all had this aura about them that lifted the whole team’s play. They are seemingly in every game because of their ability to lead a comeback against the odds. They are special in an intangible way.

In this current era of QBs, I think too many teams just don’t do their homework on the more subtle parts of what makes a great QB.
#1 facet to judging a QB: The ability to pour through details about the opposing D and make multiple decisions in nanoseconds. Problem is, you cannot really measure this.

Yep you gotta have a good QB or bust. We’re not too far removed from that 2013 Hawks D or the 2015 Broncos but a lot has changed since then. I personally don’t have any feelings about the contract situation because I haven’t felt that Dak has acted in bad faith. The only thing he asked for is a 4yr contract vs the 5 we wanted to give him. That IMO is perfectly reasonable.
Since a team needs longer term contracts in order to put talent around the QB, why do you consider that reasonable?

Dak suffers from the same issue Romo did.

A defense that doesn’t generate turnovers and a team that relies on nearly perfect QB play in order to be successful. And if the QB makes a mistake or is not having their best game, they often can’t rely on the other parts to pick up the slack.

Swapping out Prescott for [whomever] isn’t likely to change the end result. Even if you somehow upgrade the QB position - it still likely doesn’t land us in the Super Bowl/deep playoff run with a defense that still doesn’t generate turnovers and offers little resistance. Just would mean more spectacular losses.

This is exactly it. With this defense, we could have Dan Marino in his prime and not make the playoffs. That's why I'm against any approach that doesn't put a high emphasis on building a championship-level defense. If we have to pay so much to keep Dak that we can't do that, then I'd rather let him go. If they can find a way to agree to terms with Dak and still build a great defense, then I'm good with keeping him.

You’re wasting your breath.

We live in a country in which 40% of the population either ignores FACTS or aren’t smart enough to process the information. That’s painfully clear in 2021.

It’s the same ratio on this board.

“DURRRR LET’S GET RID OF OUR YOUNG PRO BOWL QB (SINCE THOSE GUYS GROW ON TREES) FOR A MINUSCULE CHANCE AT A QB UPGRADE IN THE DRAFT DURRRRRRRR!!!!!!”

And you are right in the middle of the 40%, congrats, big boy!

We've seen 4.5 years of Dak. Nothing but stats-most of which were from playing when behind or vs flex defenses in garbage time. When do you call it quits on a guy? 9 years? 10? We did that with Garrett and how did that work out. He can't beat good teams.
We're doomed to 8-8 if he signs. Again.
Zeke was Jerry's 1st mistake and he needs to learn from it.
Let’s hear your alternative

Awwww, you must be a lowly, anti-Dak troglodyte who got his feelings hurt. All of the smart kids are laughing at you again, just like in grade school.

I know it hurts.

All the ex-players and coaches who praise Dak and urge the Cowboys to sign him are indirectly calling you an IDIOT for bleating the opposite.

Then you’re left confused and furrowing your brow in a vain attempt at understanding football.

Interesting how you have not been benched for your constant personal insults.
It's his small limited mind that hinders him, try and show a little compassion and be thankful you don't have his weak mind handicap.

Comeback is 1 word.

You didn’t know that. You know why? Because there’s a wind tunnel between your ears.

Just like in grade school, Mr. Inferior. Just like in grade school.

You know something? I get that you are totally into Dak as our QB, but what make me wonder is if you really are?

The reason I say this is because I would not think that Dak would like the posts you make to support him by calling us Cowboy fans all kinds of names because you think it's funny or that your trying to make some other point to make yourself happy over Dak.

Another thing you might not understand...the 'shade' you try to throw to anyone that does not agree on a contract...like "grade school" stuff, you are just projecting who you are, and you just might not understand that.

You think if Dak read this thread he would be proud of you? You think the good Dak fans are proud of you for acting a fool against all us fans?

Is your goal to come here and stir up trouble to satisfy your fantasy or you just have nothing to do? Your just laughing in your face...what a shame.

Already gave my alternative. Go after Big Ben if PIT releases him and/or use the draft and move up. (Even Gilbert was really good against PIT's best D in the NFL at the time, much better than Dalton but I'd keep Gilbert for backup and let Dalton walk..) USe Big Ben until the draftee has time to develop and meanwhile spend spend spend on the trenches on both sides of the ball, i.e. REBUILD and with Stats Prescott we aint gonna be ABLE to rebuild nuthin and we aint ever gonna win nuthin.

Am I supposed to take you seriously when you can’t properly differentiate “your” from “you’re”?

They teach that to 3rd graders.

I was spot-on about the intellect of your ilk. You people have been thoroughly exposed as inferior know-nothings who couldn’t understand this sport if your lives depended on it.

I know it hurts.
