Not a fan, gets a little to whacked for me, save it for the XFL or Canadian league.
I’m a fan of the college football OT except maybe make the starting point the 50 yard line for each team and make the 2 point conversion attempt mandatory the entire time. It would take a bit longer but would be the fairest way to do it IMO.
Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.
I do think we need to look for alternatives.
The NFL needs a sudden death solution that can be achieved in a relatively short period of time. Ties are just bad. NFL doesn't have the roster to just keep playing OT's like college.
I do like the idea of increasing strategy & decision making (i think its good for the game in all situations).
Perhaps rule changes can incentivize teams to try to end the game in regulation.
Why do you need anything to decide who has the ball in OT? The team who was on Defense last gets the ball or makes the first decision (if new rule is adopted that brings decision making into it)
Maybe you let each team have one offensive possession from the same spot. No FG's. If they both score & make the extra point then it becomes a field goal contest. Each team gets to choose the spot for the opponents kick (distance and left to right position).
Heck maybe you let each team choose the spot they begin their offensive position. If the first team chooses the 20 and scores and the second team chooses the 30 and scores, the second team wins. It makes the choices important. In this example, the second team only wins if they choose a spot 10 yards or more behind the first team.
Maybe you have more punitive rules in OT. If play stops for an offensive "injury", the offense forfeits yardage or timeout. If play stops for a defensive "injury", the defense has option of giving up yardage or timeout. If no timeouts remain, tough luck. Stop some of the BS injuries to stop the clock.
Maybe you allow unused timeouts to carryover into OT. This would influence how the final minutes of regulation play out and could speed up the game.
Bottom line, we could probably come up with something that improves the game.
