Not a huge fan of this proposal.

college OT rules are best.

and like aria said. Make going for 2 mandatory on any touchdowns.

if you do that... the OT sessions will not be long. Not long at all. What’s the odds of both teams scoring a TD AND the 2 point conversion?

Ravens to propose revolutionary "spot and choose" overtime procedure - ProFootballTalk

The overtime rules are poised for a potential shakeup far more intriguing than a simple reversion to true sudden death. Per multiple sources with knowledge of the situation, the Ravens will be proposing a pair of overtime procedures premised on the concept of "spot and choose."

It works like this: One team picks the spot of the ball to start overtime, and the other team chooses whether to play offense or defense.

If the one team picks, for example, the offense’s own 20 yard line, the opponent would then choose whether to play offense from their own 20 or to play defense, with the other team having the ball on its own 20. This would minimize greatly the impact of the coin toss; under this proposal, the coin toss would be used only to give the team that wins the toss the right to pick the spot of the ball (along with the end zone to be defended) or to choose offense or defense.

I would rather see something like the college OT rules where both teams get the ball at a designated spot in the opponents end of the field. Except I would move it back to the 35 yd line or maybe even midfield.

College rules. Way more fun and gives both side an equal chance.

umm until its quadruple OTS with half the players twice a long of season. The rules are to prevent never ending OTs with game 6 days away.. these dudes are playing for Pro Careers and coaches for their careers, this is NOT college.. NHL does it one OT or then shoot out, ends it more quickly..

so NO to the new OT ruels..they changed them already and this is best for the pros..

So basically, one team picks the yard line and the other team picks whether they play offense or defense? If they play offense they start on their side of the field and if they pick defense they start at the opponents side of the field?

Interesting, but I don't like it. I'd prefer the game is won or lost on the play on the field and not the strategy of where to spot the ball. Play overtime like you play the game and overtime should be limited to post-season only.

Go back to the 15 OT rule, and keep scoring as is. The 10 minutes sucks, and it leads to more ties. Which is why the OT came in was to eliminate ties.
I actually think they should play a set time no matter how much a team scores. No sudden death crap. So if they play 10 minutes, then play the full 10 or 12, 15, whatever the decide.

Not a fan, gets a little to whacked for me, save it for the XFL or Canadian league.

I’m a fan of the college football OT except maybe make the starting point the 50 yard line for each team and make the 2 point conversion attempt mandatory the entire time. It would take a bit longer but would be the fairest way to do it IMO.

Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.
I do think we need to look for alternatives.
The NFL needs a sudden death solution that can be achieved in a relatively short period of time. Ties are just bad. NFL doesn't have the roster to just keep playing OT's like college.
I do like the idea of increasing strategy & decision making (i think its good for the game in all situations).
Perhaps rule changes can incentivize teams to try to end the game in regulation.
Why do you need anything to decide who has the ball in OT? The team who was on Defense last gets the ball or makes the first decision (if new rule is adopted that brings decision making into it)
Maybe you let each team have one offensive possession from the same spot. No FG's. If they both score & make the extra point then it becomes a field goal contest. Each team gets to choose the spot for the opponents kick (distance and left to right position).
Heck maybe you let each team choose the spot they begin their offensive position. If the first team chooses the 20 and scores and the second team chooses the 30 and scores, the second team wins. It makes the choices important. In this example, the second team only wins if they choose a spot 10 yards or more behind the first team.
Maybe you have more punitive rules in OT. If play stops for an offensive "injury", the offense forfeits yardage or timeout. If play stops for a defensive "injury", the defense has option of giving up yardage or timeout. If no timeouts remain, tough luck. Stop some of the BS injuries to stop the clock.
Maybe you allow unused timeouts to carryover into OT. This would influence how the final minutes of regulation play out and could speed up the game.
Bottom line, we could probably come up with something that improves the game.

Sounds like a good way to tank for 1st pick

I was thinking that when I read this post earlier.
"An equally stupid idea would be each team selects one player. They meet at the 50 yard line and pull their pants down. Whoever is bigger gets the win."

Just get rid of the rule where if the first team who has the ball scores a TD the game is over, but if they kick a FG the other team gets a possession.

The other team gets a possession, regardless. That immediately makes it less about the coin toss and you're still playing real football.

Improves the game? How about continue playing the game the way it should be played without given one team an advantage based on a coin flip or how many time outs they used.

Sorry man, your ideas would ruin the game even further IMO and are so far out there that I don’t think most people would want to see that. Hell, you want teams to play a variation of HORSE with their FG kickers. If you’re playing with some buddies on the local high school field, sounds fun but I don’t want to see a professional game with those kind of backyard rules.

How many times do you really think both teams would score a TD AND 2 point conversion from the 50? If a professional athlete can’t handle playing one or two OT series than the coach should be fired for lack of conditioning.

An alternative take on the college rules that I think would be fun is overtime begins with one team on offense at the opposing teams 5yd line, 1st and goal. They get a 4 downs for a TD, FG or no points. If a TD is scored they must go for the 2 pt conversion.
Next, the other team gets a chance to start on offense at the opposing team’s 5yard-line 1st and goal as well.

If one team out scores the other, it's game over. And a turnover returned for a TD ends the game instantly. If both teams have the same result, next possession double the distance to the goal line. i.e. the line of scrimmage is now at the 10yd line, 1st and goal. Still get the same results, move the LOS to the 20yd line, 1st and goal. Next and concurrent possessions the LOS is the 50yd line, 1st and goal.
It would probably only take a few possessions to get a winner.

Changes are supposed to be made to fine tune the game, stop with these radical propositions.

Edit: in before the people that support every corporate move throw insults for those being against these proposed changes

This is probably the simplest solution

And then if the kicking team allows a touchdown and then a FG two drives in a row. They deserve to lose anyway. To be honest.

I mean there has to be some kind of balance.

I do think back to the falcons New England Super Bowl. And despite the falcons second half struggled and all that. It would have been fair to at least give their offense a chance to score a TD themselves in OT.

The basis of my comments are about forcing a winner. Playing another period and still having a tie is useless.

Why does the offense or defense deserve any extra opportunities? If they couldn't get it done in regulation, why not just end the game there?

Special teams are just a much of the game as anything else, why not let them decide the outcome? similar to soccer & hockey having subsets of the game for scoring opportunities.

Like others have commented, people resist change but often after change is implemented it is regarded as positive. I simply think we could come up with ways to add importance to every play and decision while ensuring their is a winner.
