The most important upgrade for this team

It always amazes how some fans need hope to follow and root for their team.

I guess following Baylor football my Alma Mater has prepared me for a dormant program where winning championships isn’t a reality.

Hope isn’t necessary to follow or even enjoy. You live for rivalry wins and the occasional conference title or bowl win. It is what it is.

The problem isn't a lack of knowledge with them, it is the priorities. We've already had the GM admit he should have fired himself years ago. He knows he's not the best man for the job but he is the only man for the job, according to his boss.

When they passed on Manziel and drafted a great O-line, I thought they were on the right track. I thought Jerry had improved, and maybe he has improved some, but he's still light years from being a great GM.

The culture is the reason. Even Jimmy Johnson alluded to this.

The Cowboys of today are treated like royalty. They are all heralded as superstars, and get all these endorsements; etc. when most of them haven't even won a playoff game; let alone the Super Bowl.

Not saying the players aren't hungry; they're just not as hungry as they should be. They've gained popularity and financial security, so it's safe to say a lot of today's Cowboys are already satisfied.

General Manager and Director of Player Personnel set the culture, and they have jobs-for-life.

Only way it changes is if they hire a head coach who makes Jerry uncomfortable.

This ........ A thousand times this

We need a player with the fire, heart, and intensity of Michael Irvin.

That is something we have been missing for nearly a quarter century.

As always with Jerry, it's unclear just who in the org has power, besides Jerry. "Consensus" means no one gets held accountable. Someone should for the 2016-2019 defensive drafts. And not just *after* you dump the DC and declare him the scapegoat.

Well said. Here’s the only accountability in this organization for two decades plus- throw the lifeless body of an assistant coach over the walls and attach blame for the lack of results the higher ups get on that mid level manager. It’s a cancer that eats this organization from within.

If Jerry even reshuffled the deck some by taking some responsibility away from SJ, hiring someone else to have some authority...etc. The lack of accountability for the leaders of this organization is the fly in the Cowboys soup.

I think they do, but maybe like Jerry, they don't see it as a problem.

I mean, their fantasy teams have no culture issues, and thats how many people think these days....these guys are robots.

Very not true. They need to be pushed to the limit by coaches by some sort of fear.....and Jerry's need to be the good guy with players makes that tough to pull off.
They keep stating that culture can be bought simply by winning.

We all know we need help at multiple positions. We can talk Safeties, DTs, LBs...whatever position of need we have on this team. But the most important upgrade our Cowboys need...the biggest obstacle holding this team back from being a contender is its CULTURE. Currently, it’s as soft as a roll of Charmin and entitled as someone named Spalding.

Yes, we must have talent upgrades at multiple positions. Talent is critical to success in any sport. We need lots more talent for sure. But what this team needs more than anything- its players, coaches and entire organization, is to get tougher and more accountable.

You could bring in 10 HOFers at multiple positions, but until this culture toughens up- I hate to say it- we should not expect much to change. The difference between a typical 8-8 season and a deep playoff run isn’t just talent. It’s a change in the culture. That’s the most important element Tom Brady brought to the Buccaneers this past year. Accountability and toughness. It matters a ton.

The difference in talent between teams winning SBs and those who only flirt with it, is usually the culture.
The definition of "culture" in the Jimmy Johnson Dictionary was Fear of Losing.as well as a degree of discomfort when it came to your status as a player. Very few of Jimmy's players were allowed to feel secure in their employment. Today these SB champion players are thankful for Jimmy's tactics. However, during that time as a Cowboy, Jimmy never let them relax, they learned to fear losing far more than they ever learned to enjoy winning. When Jimmy left, the fear left and it was a matter of time, a very short period of time, for the team to crumble.

My guess is there are quite a few Cowboy players today, some of them major contributors, that need to be sent to the "asthma field".

Well said. Jimmy made winning the be all, end all of the team. It was THE goal. Jerry has made winning A goal. Not THE goal. He wants to win, but not bad enough to change. If winning was the most important goal in this organization, JJ would remove every impediment to winning- including people. But it clearly is not the most important thing.

As it stands now, luck rather than planning is probably our best avenue for winning in the playoffs.

They didn't miss out. They were never interested. After the JG debacle we were always going to get a guy with previous head coach experience in the NFL.

To Jerry, JG was out-of-the-box thinking and it didn't work. He's now got an experienced HC with a SB ring and couldn't be happier, because that's Jerry.

McCarthy, like Wade Phillips, was desperate for another shot as a HC and won't cause Jerry any discomfort.

Jerry would never be comfortable again hiring a college coach with a lot of charisma like Jimmy had. A guy like Urban Meyer takes up too much of the spotlight and if Meyer ever wins big, the spotlight and “credit” would shine more on him than Jerry would ever be comfortable with.

Been saying that for a while. I'm a Cowboys fan win or lose. What I don't get is why others who constantly complain and trash the team continue to watch?
We don't. This past year was the first year I've ever missed a game - multiple games actually. There are lots of people on this forum who did the same..............
Great post @Bobhaze as all of your posts are.

I have missed 1 game in my life since 1965. My grandfather passed away in 1976 and I missed the game vs the St. Louis Cardinals that year other than that If Cowboys are playing I am watching. Been to every Thanksgiving Day game except for 2, the 1st one they played and last year due to Covid. And lucky enough to go to 1 SB game vs Pitt in 76 season when tickets were still affordable, the ticket price for that SB game face value 35 dollars. lol
