The NFL will undergo its first significant regular-season schedule change since 1978, as the owners approved to add a 17th game to the schedule beginning in 2021. The change was a year in the making as the owners had the option in the new collective bargaining agreement to increase the number of regular-season games per club to 17 -- but not more -- at any time. The change will also result in the league reducing preseason games from four to three -- the maximum amount of games the new CBA allows.

"This is a monumental moment in NFL history," said NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. "The CBA with the players and the recently completed media agreements provide the foundation for us to enhance the quality of the NFL experience for our fans. And one of the benefits of each team playing 17 regular-season games is the ability for us to continue to grow our game around the world."

I take it that if you play the extra road game this year, you will get the extra home game the following year?

The league should delay having international games for at least another season...assess what the Covid situation looks like in early 2022.

Super Bowl will fall on Valentine's Day weekend starting in 2026 (on the actual day in 2027).....image the marketing ideas that will be created.

Players salaries grew with along with it, which is why you don't hear them complaining. The NFL and NFLPA worked out 17th game compensation before this was announced to the public.

I agree most pro leagues play too many games, though. Especially when half the league makes the playoffs.
Last year-
NBA____ 16 out of 30 teams
MLB_____16 out of 30 teams
NFL______14 out of 32 teams

Interesting it's all NFC vs AFC. .. so much for the last game of the season being a divisional game increasing the potential for division title and playoff hopes.

all the NFC East teams have to travel, I guess that is a good thing. Wash at Buffalo, Giants at the Dolphins, Philly at the Jets and Cowboys at the Pats.

Hopefully not in New England in December

Agreed. As I said in another thread, I don't think that the NFL has really thought this idea through. Teams with more road games than home games will have a legitimate complaint when that extra road game results in them missing the playoffs or a lower seed. The NFL should really vote this down and reconvene next year to agree on 18. Otherwise, this is going to be a disaster.

I can’t believe they’re not using neutral stadiums for the games... Gives every team with an extra home game an unfair advantage in that year.

This is the best way to use the 17 game schedule. Use the extra game as a neutral site game. That's the ONLY way to keep the 17 game schedule fair to all. Use it as an international game and/or I'm neutral domestic cities. Otherwise, this is going to blow up in their faces. Unless they reconvene to 18 games or make the 17th game neutrally located, this is one of the most idiotic ideas the NFL has come up with, and that's saying alot.

I am no fan of this 17th game, but the whole reason it is all NFC at AFC is so no team will have an unfair advantage over another team when it comes to playoffs and seeding. Everyone in the NFC has 8 home, 9 away this year. You won't be competing for seeding with a team who has 9 home and 8 away since those teams are all in the AFC.

Now, of course, one may point to the SOS being unfair from this 17th game, but that's a whole 'nother matter....

So de we still have 5 PS games this year since we are playing the HOF game? If so that’s 22 games not including playoffs. :omg:

Dallas has played in New England four times since 1999.

In those games they scored a total of 31 points.

1 TD, 1 XP, 8 FG.

In the last seven meetings overall, Dallas has failed to score a TD in four of those games.

Interesting off topic fun fact.....

1996 Dallas beat each Super Bowl participant (GB + NE) without scoring a touchdown in either game.

Looks like it.
I dont think the 17th game means they will all be played in week 17.....actually it's week 18.

Why wouldn't they be mixed in throughout the season?

They arent tied to one another and I dont think the league is going to give up on wanting all division games in the final week.

I see what you mean about the HOF game usually being a 5th PS game, but they are reducing those by one.

It also says the CBA says max of three per team, so I'll bet that counts.

Especially with the world situation. I don't see Dallas and Pitt playing four each.
