Kiper Mock 4.0 4/13/21

Drafting a corner at #10, or even #15 -- can't be the BPA.

Corners are reactionary players that lack aggression and physicality -- constantly on an 'island' with coverage on receivers, & are highly dependent on the front 7 in attacking and pressuring the QB.
At #10, or #15, draft impact players that are aggressive, and are game-changers -- OL attacks the defense, WR's challenge the defense, DL collapse the pocket and pressure the QB, LB's attack the line of scrimmage, etc.,

Corners are 'island' players -- their impact is minimal, they are contingent on the DL causing the QB to panic (if a QB has time to throw, I don't care who you have in the secondary), & more important drafting them at #10, or #15, a team is leaving more valuable/foundational impact players on the board.

Before you all chime with Patrick Peterson or Jalen Ramsey -- just note some of the front 7 players those corners benefited from during their respective tenures in Arizona and Jacksonville.
In particular, Campbell, Chandler Jones, and Yannick Ngakoue put up high sack numbers -- look up the numbers.

Arizona:
Calais Campbell
Sam Acho
Darnell Dockett
Karlos Dansby
John Abraham
Alex Okafer
Chandler Jones

Jacksonville:
Calais Campbell
Malik Jackson
Myles Jack
Yannick Ngakoue

The most important place on the field is the pocket.
Teams need players that can throw from that spot, that can protect that spot, and that can attack that spot.

The fetish with corners at the top of the 1st round needs to stop.

Give me the best edge rusher in the draft:
Jaelan Phillips.

You may want to go into witness protection, bro. Winicki has a slow and deadly trigger, and he'll be coming after you.

Cowboys have a lot of picks in this years draft. I'd be OK with picking up an extra in next years draft. All the guys we pick this year aren't going to make the team. Better to pick up a few for next year where the value is a little better for us. Besides, two of our Biggest needs are at the top of next years class. Thibodeaux at DE and the Safety out of ND. Both of those guys could be high picks next year and it wouldn't hurt to have an extra 1st to move up and get one of them if they are there for us. Both of those position in this draft class aren't there at the top of the draft.

I'd like to see us take those extra picks and turn it into more quality.

When you hear things like they would've taken Diggs in the 1st round last year had it not been for Lamb it does get me worried.

Exactly.

With only one of the top five quarterbacks still available, the Patriots jump five spots with the Cowboys, giving Dallas their 2022 first-round pick in return. The Cowboys don't need a quarterback, so they'd be thrilled to get an offer like this and move down only a few spots, because their biggest holes are on defense and they can get a good player at No. 15.

This would be the first time in the common draft era (since 1967) that five quarterbacks went in the top 10 picks. The quickest that five QBs were picked was in 1999, when five went in the top 12.

15. Dallas Cowboys - Jaycee Horn CB South Carolina

Dallas trades back five spots with New England, gains what would likely be a 2022 first-round pick and is able to plug a need at No. 15. The Cowboys' defense was dreadful last season, and they lost starting corner Chidobe Awuzie in free agency. They can pair Horn with 2020 second-round pick Trevon Diggs, who had a nice rookie season. The knock on Horn is that he had only two career interceptions, but that ball production should come in time.

44. Dallas Cowboys - Joe Tryon DE Washington

Tryon played linebacker, defensive end and defensive tackle at Washington, picking up eight sacks in 2019 before opting out of last season. At 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, he'd play end for the Cowboys, who have an under-the-radar hole behind DeMarcus Lawrence. Dallas could go offensive line here as well.

Who was available at 10? Was Slater there?

Let me stop you right there. You trade the hell down. Get out of there. Don't waste a top 10 pick on an impact-less player.

Sure, keep on trading down until you can get yourself a Taco and a stockpile of later round picks.

That approach hasn't really worked for us

Like the trade, even though the Eagles get Surtain. Don't care for the pick we made in the second. And rather than a first next year, I'd prefer an extra second this year.

If Melly Mel would have sent Barmore to the Cowboys at 15 now we're talking about really beginning to fix this defense.

A real DT and an extra first next year is nice.

Or a real DT and then a CB and S in the second round (instead of getting a first-rounder next year).

Why? Diggs played better the the third pick in draft and is considered the top cornerback in that draft. Diggs is a future stud.

It has nothing to do with Diggs.

Diggs was proven to be able to be had later on so you would like to see your team squeeze every drop of value out of their draft picks instead of reaching a round early.

This draft is actually a poor one. Anytime a tight end is considered the number 2 player and 3 small wide receivers are considered top 6 players, I have concerns. I think you can follow the tea leaves and see the Cowboys want to improve the defense with this draft. I don’t think Pitts makes us any better then the corners would make us.

Maybe not but he's a potential impact player and NFL defense these days is mostly about how well you rush the passer because DB's have everything stacked against them.

Catch-17 Jerrah has finally worn you down. The team would be entertaining with Pitts especially playing the home games on turf. I get it, we could score 50 against bad defenses but and up 8-8. The Joneses get richer while we blame Dak, MM and Jaylon. Jerrah is the best business man in the league.

TJ Watts literally went one or two picks later. You can blame the quality of players on bad drafting there.

Yeah, for sure. But that doesn't make the idea any more persuasive. You can't just pick a position and say 'this is the only one worth a top X pick'. You have to evaluate players, not their positions. In fact, that's how we ended up with Taco instead of Watt.
