What I think happened at 10

I don't know...i am starting to think that Parsons was the target all along based on what is coming out. He was the highest-rated defensive player on the board for them, the info coming out that they were considering moving to 6 for HIM, not the corners.

The fact that he was one of the "dawgs" up high, along with Horn.

I see their order of preference as Parsons, Horn, Surtain...imo.

I love what they did.

What info coming out? There was no rush on Parsons. If they were moving up for Parsons, why would they then pass on him at 10? That makes no sense at all. They were targeting the CBs and thats why they tried to move up. Parsons was plan C at best.

Info from the PC and "insiders" like Fish.

The concern was slot 7 and 8. Once it got past there, they had wiggle room. Not that hard to understand.

There were reports before the draft they liked Parsons.

There are reports that every team in the league liked him. Obviously we like him. In fact we like him so much that we passed on 3 extra picks including an extra first round pick to land him.

What info coming out? There was no rush on Parsons. If they were moving up for Parsons, that would just further evidence that they can't read the draft even a few picks out. But your explanation makes even less sense in the face of the fact they PASSED on Parson at 10. So, why would they try to trade up to 6 for Parsons but not take him at 10?
Because at 7 Detroit was one of the teams mocked and told to be interested in parsons along with WR. When Sewell dropped to them in changed the landscape a bit and as the 2 corners left board it also meant that Denver and Carolina who were also rumored to have some interest wasnt taking him .So if you have Slater and Parsons sitting there and you know Philly wants WR why not trade with them

It makes sense to me but Im not real upset they took Parsons.in fact Im excited. I wouldnt have been butthurt if it was a corner though. Fish who can full of **** said as such earlier and I think archer confirmed it

Parsons isn't worth passing on the mega trade offered by Chicago. We missed a great opportunity that the Giants were more than happy to accept.

I think at several points in the offseason, the FO had discussions concerning the draft, their needs, what constituted a good day one and under what conditions would they consider trading in either direction.

I think there were 5 players targeted that they had to come away with 1 of them and the worst case was that 4 of them would be gone by the 9th pick. The worst case happened but it wasn't the last player standing they thought it would be.

All thorough the off season, it was about 4 or 5 QB's, Sewell, Pitts and 3 WR's. The odds of 2 of the 3 D targets being gone were remote. And certainly not the 2 CB targets. The Cowboys had Pitts, Sewell, Surtain, Horn and Parsons as their top 5. And were reasonable sure Pitts and Sewell were gone.

Then on Tuesday, we began to hear rumbles that CAR and DEN might be eying the corners or some other team might jump into the top 9 for one of them but not both. On early Thursday, not only did I think they would be gone, so did the FO because they began to consider going up for 1 of them. The worst case scenario was developing.

Trading with the Eagles was the shocker of the 1st round for me but the Cowboys knew they weren't taking the last man standing; however, the team most aligned with Parsons in most mocks was the Giants, that was the risk. The Cowboys knew the Eagles would end up with Smith at 12 so letting them have him at 10 was nothing but a 3rd round pickup for them.

And what the Eagles did was of little matter, the Cowboys were looking at 0-5 on their targets in the 1st round.

I do not know if the CHI trade was offered to the Cowboys but going to 20 would mean they do not get any of the 5 targets in the draft and that is failure. Doesn't matter about the 1st round 2022 pick, since when did Booger look beyond the upcoming season? Just not his MO.

I think Parsons was firmly in that 5th spot and they centered most of their discussions around Horn v Surtain with Booger even making the comment about evaluating an opt out player.

Micah Parsons was the consolation prize, they really wanted one of the CB's and the only other option was to roll the dice on Farley and a 2nd on an injury risk is not the same as the 10th or 12th roll of the dice.

I think there is inherent risk with Parsons with his off the field behavior and that interview made him look as dumb as an email stamp. However, there is reward as well because he can hit and run better than anyone at LB now.

I really do not have a strong opinion about this pick but I do know any team with the 10th pick and facing losing out on their top 5 targets isn't a good thing especially when you consider every person in the free world was aware that the Cowboys needed D more than any other team. In 80% of the mocks, they were the first team to take a D player in the top 10.

Then, as drafts are prone to do, it began to get real 48 hours prior to the first pick and they did the best they could do.

My grade for them, not the pick but for them getting 1 of their top 5 is a solid A.
Yea, the grade is an A, but it is an A+ with the added third round pick. Some folks wanted the OL, I do not disagree, but there are too many needs on the defensive side of the ball as you stated.

The Parsons pick reminds me a little, just a little of the Diggs pick in that both picks help now and in the near future but were not NEEDS. So very smart picks in both years.

Ya I've yet to see actual correspondence as that actually happened but I can be on board with that thought process

@CouchCoach Emmitt Smith becoming a Cowboy was not according to Jimmy Johnson/Jerry plan. Thankfully, the Jets took Cowboys plan A player and the rest is history.

Just like in life, sometimes plan B, C, D, and E are better. Sometimes, even the unplanned plans are better.

Davis is nowhere near the prospect that Parsons is. There is isn’t a reputable scout that thinks that. Your feelings are hurt because we didn’t get the guy you wanted. That’s fine. But you stating that he was not the right pick means very little. The fact is the cowboys drafted arguably the best defensive player in the draft. That’s not what I say, that’s what many in the scouting community believe.

My feelings are hurt? LOL.

Just curious how you know what their board look like or who they were targeting? You're just making a bunch of assumptions unless you work for Jerry and was inside the war room. Also how do you know they couldn't trade down further?

All that being said Jane Slater said before the draft don't be surprised if they go after Parsons....... she was right just like she was with Trysten Hill. I take what she says over your assumptions.

I don't know. No one knows for sure. But I am saying that the Cowboys make no sense if Parsons was their target. For one thing, they claim they tried to trade up to 6. That wasn't for Parsons. Because if it was then it was stupid, especially since they then traded down from 10 after the 2 CBs were gone. So that there tells us the CBs were higher on their target list than Parsons. The signs are all there. Parsons was not the target and Jerry was just blowing smoke up everyone's butts because he didn't get who he really wanted. I have no doubt the Parsons was high on their draft board, but don't tell me he was their top defensive target. That is just total BS.

Not top defensive target, but top ranked defensive player. They may have had him ranked 1 on their board but that does not mean they planned to take him 1. They had the corner backs ranked lower but with a higher factor of need for that position.

I don’t know. The Ticket had David Moore on today and I trust him. He’s fine going after the Boys so no reason to lie. He was saying that Parsons was the #4 guy on their board OVERALL and top D player so he was above the 2 DBs. You’d think only Pitts, Sewell and a WR were there. Someone can easily fact check this. I also don’t know why this isn’t possible. It’s not the 1st time our FO has been enamored with a guy that many thought was not on their radar or who was rated lower overall

I think what he said was that he was ranked higher on the teams Big Board but not on their own Draft Board. That's a needs thing. But if Parsons is rated that high on their Big Board, that's a little concerning to me.

An excellent supposition of what happened and why. The Jones boys rarely seem to think past the next opportunity to sell jerseys.

I’m hard pressed to remember a time since Jerry took complete control of the draft when he cobbled a trade together involving big acquisitions of draft capital for future years. As you said, he seems either incapable or unwilling to consider long term value. I literally don’t think he’s capable of long term roster building.

Yes, this is what I am saying basically. But Jerry is acting like they pulled off some kind of draft coup by getting the guy they wanted all along. Parsons was a consolation pick.

If the Giants selected Parsons, wonder if Slater would have been the pick or they trade down again.

The cowboys have done very well with their first rd picks over the years. Even Claiborne; he was rated very highly by everyone. Now of course you are going to have a dud now and then but the Boys have fewer 1st rd duds then just about anyone. So I reject the notion that they were fumbling around like drunken cub scouts.

This.

Cowboys are an underrated drafting team. I have noticed we are weak @ finding late round players but somehow do better than most in the UDFA market.

Seattle for example is flipped.

They draft poorly in high rounds but find incredible talent late and absolutely kill it in the UDFA market.

Parcells did it with the Browns. They traded up for Brady Quinn. We took Julius Jones then Marcus Spears the following year. It was bad trade since they passed on Stephen Jackson.
