I do think Parsons was the guy all along

Ian Rappoport of the NFL Network said that it was Parsons all along.

Start this video at about 0:49 to hear what Rappoport says about it,

He said that he knew for what-3 days that Dallas had Parsons over the corners.
What impresses me about that is how unwavering he is, he knew because he was told by one of the Joneses, which would not surprise me as Booger looks at part of the draft as a chance to show off.

He said he knew days before, which just so happens to coincide with CAR not hiding the fact they were taking Horn. I think they knew they were taking Parsons and this trade up scenario, where's that coming from? I had not heard about trading up except in the annual rumors of what the Cowboys are going to do. If that is fact, then accompanying that would have been the player they were going up for and who would go up for a D player in this draft?

You don’t trade down for a third to risk losing the guy you wanted all along
You don’t think Dallas knew what the Eagles/Giants wanted? These teams know what each other want to draft. The Cowboys understood that the corners would be gone by 10 that is why the tried to trade up to 6. Before the 2020 season Parsons was a top 5 prospect and the best defender. The issue with Parsons is that middle linebacker is becoming like running backs. They don’t seem to last to long after the first contract and you can draft good linebackers later in the draft.

When Parsons said he “knew,” it was more like a premonition or sign, rather than him being told he would definitely be the pick.

I think there was a legitimate risk of losing Parsons in the trade down. True, probably no one was going to trade up for an off the ball LB. But only one of Philly or NY was going to get Smith. NY could have easily taken Parsons at 11 if they hadn't traded down. Although they clearly wanted WR, any WR taken at 11 would have been a reach. Parsons could have been a BPA for them.

The comment about not taking players that opted out was a bit of a head fake. But the strongest evidence for your argument was probably Jane Slater's report on draft day of the Cowboy's interest in Parsons. However, that might have just been another head fake to keep someone for trading up ahead of them for one of the CBs.
Rapaport was told in advance that they were on Parsons.

I don't think they were concerned about losing him to the Giants, they are at the QB crossroads and they had to have a WR. Gettleman has to make the call on Jones or he could be on the beach. They didn't get who they wanted but Toney might surprise some people laying it all on the big 3.

The Cowboys were in the enviable, depends on your perspective, position of needing anything and everything on defense but the marching orders to Quinn were to stop the run first. If they cannot stop the run, that high octane offense won't matter except for stats. They were a stat pad for mid level RB's last year and that's just embarrassing.

Where does the trading up to 6th come from?

Giants traded out of their spot. There’s always the risk the team that traded in was going for Parsons

They traded out because Smith was gone and they felt they could get Toney. With Fields and Jones still on the board, anyone going up was going for a QB. Had they been gone, this takes on a different look. At one time, most had all 5 QB's gone before 10. Fields started losing steam, probably related to his Epilepsy disclosure.

why does this matter so much to fans? who really cares?

we talked about Parsons pre-draft most here not only said he was one of the top defenders in the draft he was a potential pick for the FO..

yes at the moment we have more of need for CB and they were first targets but in no way is parsons a drop down and as if they settled for him..they were targeting BPA and need if all 3 were tie they would be happy with all..

the biggest question is if Surtain and Horn were both there at 10 which would they have taken?..

well when there was an equal talent left that yes was on their board and they traded down and still got him..thats a win

s much as the CB position was need there wasn't much of gap in need at LB we lost Lee and thomas etc with LVE injury prone and JS having some troubles well

i saw in hindsight with the resigning of Lewis and keeping brown , really LB was just as big of need and we got equal talent if not more getting parsons.

theres no regrets from anyone at the Star nor from most fans, i had Parsons on my list of 1st round hopefuls..

no need to solve any mystery there isnt one. Defense was the target and they got that and then some..what was weakness or a question mark at LB may be strength..

we got KJ, Wright, and that CB i cant say or spell his name to hopefully fill a hole..

got a few fatty's to be possible NTs, some defensive line rotational types

id say all in all a solid draft..

so no need to figure out who was supposed to go where..the draft is done we have players and now have to find out which ones can play NOW..

this is like having your hopes set on a few nice bucket list cars on alot and the choices were tough and the list was Ferraris, Lambo, and McLaren..

well if the first two were gone, would it be truly settling for the McLaren? they are all pretty equal and in the same class..id say id be happy when any of the three

You could have said with Jones and Fields on the board, anyone trading up to 10 was going for them too, but we went WR. Anyone who caught wind Dallas wanted Parsons could have tried to jump the Cowboys. Dallas could guess that wasn’t happening, but didn’t know. NYG didn’t know it’d happen to them

Exactly my point.. I don’t think they were all in on any one player.. that includes the corners. I think they liked several defensive players and could have gone several directions. There where rumors they really like Zaven Collins also.. but that goes to the waste side when Parsons is picked.

If they were “All IN” on one of the corners.. they could have used one of the 10 drafts picks to move up a spot or two.. they didn’t.

Bingo!

You could just trade up to #1 to guarantee you get that corner too. You don’t throw away unnecessary picks. Everyone has to guess how they draft will go and plan accordingly.

Eagles GM said in the presser after the first round that the reason they traded up to grab Smith was because fewer QBs went in the top 10 than they expected… meaning the number of non-QB talent gone by pick 12 just increased by 2 more guys. They had to improvise to get someone on their wishlist.

Everyone was shocked Denver went Surtain at 9, what good is moving up for him if Dallas was confident he’d be there at 10? Crazy things happen

I had thought Denver would be targeting Parsons all along,, but they needed a corner and they got one.
I did too, until I looked at their LB corps. They are stacked. They not only have stud starters, but also have talented young backups. There was zero need at LB for them. And w/ Bouye busting so badly, the need at CB was massive.

I wasn't shocked, Surtain was only associated with one team more then DEN, if they weren't going QB.

The easiest picks for me to call after 1 and 2 were 8 and 9, strictly based on the divisions they play in and their secondary's. CAR was still in the QB game until Darnold. Then it was just a question of which CB and they didn't think anyone would jump them for Horn and basically announced that before the draft.

The biggest surprise to me was NE. I was waiting for the trade to be announced after the 3rd pick because the Niners took Lance instead of Jones. However, Belichick proved himself smarter than me, barely though, because he knew SF was the hurdle his target needed to clear and he could just wait.

I think all of the teams picking behind the Cowboys knew they were taking Parsons and no one wanted to make the jump up for him. They felt safe with PHL because they knew what they wanted, the Giants as well.

And add the QB's in their division and they need help in the secondary and more than they got.

There was no team that was going to trade up for an off ball linebacker. The quarterback was always going to be the trade up route. Plus the Cowboys were high on Collins who went to Arizona. The Cowboys knew what they were doing. The organization is not a bunch of yahoos on Cowboys Zone. They know the land scape of the league.
