Here are key things that the Cowboys can do to beat Tampa on Opening Night. Yes, I said BEAT Tampa. This game isn't a lost cause before it's played. These are two NFL teams playing each other, so each can win. Here's the key things to do when playing Tompa Bay.

  • Pressure and hit Brady as much as possible. Brady struggles when he's getting hit a lot. This is how the Bears beat him last year.
  • Run the ball a lot. Oline's strengths should be run blocking. The Bucs are going to try to blitz a lot. A good way to slow them down is to run it down their throat. When they play run heavy team like the Bears, their defence struggles. Additionally, we will need this to control the clock. Do not give Brady a lot of time on the ball.
  • Put Wright on Evans. He's similarly sized and has similar physical traits. Yes, he's a 3rd rookie, but he's the best equipped to handle Evans while Diggs takes Godwin. Joseph's not ready to play, nor should he. Brown is what we know him to be and does not match up well on Evans. Wright does. He might get beat early, but he's a rookie. Let him get experience against a WR he actually can match up with. I'd also put a little safety help from Kazee on Evans early to help out Wright until he appears comfortable.
  • Lewis should take the slot WR. He's best equipped there.
  • Quick passes. We don't need deep shots this game, at least early on. We need to get the ball out quickly and let the WRs and Zeke use their feet.
  • Most importantly - NO TURNOVERS! We need to not fumble and not throw INTs.
  • Oh, and field position will be useful.
If we can do that, I think we will win.

Pressure Brady: can’t do because our DL is barely average

Run the ball: can’t do because our OL is injured

Convert 3rd down and red zone efficiency: can’t do because of average QB with average C and LOG

get turnovers: can’t do because of average DL and safety play

  • We have Parsons whos specialty is pass rush. Also, DLaw didn't play the preseason. Let's see what he does. Also, I don't remember seeing Gregory play in the preseason either.
  • We have Smith back. If we struggle with the run, then short passes WCO-style would be best. Get Zeke out in space and throw quick passes.
  • We have a great QB who's easily best in the division. Short passes should be fine for us. Brady made a living on short quick passes. We have the speed to do that.
  • Did you see the way Parsons attacks the ball?

Pressure Brady with Parsons

on offense you cant get pass happy, yeah Tampa secondary gave up tons of air yards but being pass happy makes tampas dline pin their ears back and rush and they can get there

gotta find a way to run the ball against what was the #1 rush d in the league

Yup, and one of the ways to do that is extended handoffs, aka short passes to Zeke. Zeke against a corner is a good matchup for Zeke.

On game day the key elements are

Coaching
QB
OL
DL
safety

we aren’t elite at even one

I saw the Giants beat the Patriots multiple times with 4 man pressure and man to man on the outside. Brady really starts to struggle when you get pressure up the middle, this is the key.

I think we're at least close with QB. Dak may not be a top 5 QB, but I think he's a top 10 QB. So, we have something there we can use.

Our Oline and Safety should both be pretty good as well. The defensive line has alot of talent, hopefully they can put it together. He's just crying to cry.

  • you are absolutely right about pressure on brady, specially pressure up the middle. he is master of stepping into the pocket and buying an extra second, but if you can pressure up the middle he tends to lose his composure, get visibily frustrated and have an off day....If we can pressure him. I would dare to say hit him even if its a penalty, but to let him know we are there and we will get to him, then we have a chance of slowing him down.

  • you are right about running the ball, not because we can't pass, but because it will shorten the game, and limit their number of possessions. that's key and I think we need to have pollard in early with runs to the outside, forcing their DL to run a little and slow down their pass rush.

  • I am not so sure for Wright on Evans, as he is a rookie and he may make one or two stops, but then he will give up the big play to one of the best WRs in the league....I am not sure if we have an answer to their WRs, outside of going with 5 DBs....Neal is key, as he was a saftey turned LB and so his coverage skills are key
  • we should go deep, middle and short, use the whole field, but back to your second point, key is to run and run effectively. control the clock, we have to win TOP to have a chance
  • we need to avoid fumbles, deep interceptions on 3rd downs are like a punt anyway, but it means we are attacking down field and I am not so hard on those. we have to get at least 2 turnovers to give our offense an extra possession.
  • yes, field position, which means special teams.....
further, we have to minimize our 3 and outs....control the clock, win field position battle.
