With a just-signed free agent kicker, how close is field goal range?

I don’t think it changes much of anything with our current HC. McCarthy has a penchant of going for it on 4th down, exp when the FG distance is longer and 1st down yardage is short. And personally, I don’t have a problem with that.

That said, if a FG is necessary.. ideally you want the new kicker’s opportunities to be at the 40yd or less.. if it’s an “end-of-half” or “game” situation.. well, you don’t have much of a choice, you’ll just have to put your trust in the kicker like any other kicker.
Statistically McCarthy needs to stay with the 'go for it' approach in order to come out ahead.
- Statistical analysis shows that the aggressive approach is better over the course of a season but it can occasionally screw you in individual games.

Let’s just say that if there’s a penalty on the extra point, we’re going for two.

Said the clueless guy. The new guy is more consistent than Greg the Leg. He was a good kicker here and in CFL. Then Fassell used cronyism to choose Greg instead - who proceeded to lose Tampa Bay for us with his missed kicks.

We shall see

its the same as any other positions there are like 5 elite types and then a 2nd tier, regardless of what you think of Greg he was élite at one time and now is on top of tier 2..so hes not money but if you think about his misses they were early in games but his big makes all in clutch times..hes made the big ones we needed late..

you aren't finding elite kicker on trees or looking for jobs..same as most positions..
We needed the big ones late because he missed the little ones earlier in the game.

not truly how that works bud, point is he makes the tough ones... he better then most give him credit for as ity goes for many coaches and players around here..he solid kicker not elite not bad and this new kid isnt taking his job..hes subbing while gz is on the dreaded list..

A miss is a missed opportunity to put points on the board. They are all Big Ones.

get over it all

missed plays on the field are important but like all qbs, rbs, OL, CBs. Labs, and Safety's, and dl etc etc coaching no one fracking perfect.,.holding greg to higher standard then all the other players who make mistakes every game is fruitless..get passed it..

he missed 4 fgs this season one was 60 yard attempt doesn't count it hail mary of kicks bs attempt the coaches decided to throw out there that 9 points dak has cost us more then that with his TOs in the endzone alone without looking back but from memory its 14 actual points but could be more in other areas..

I've never seen anything of this guy, so I wonder. Normally if the field goal is of about 55 yards or less, it's considered field goal range, though somewhat longer isn't impossible. However, not all kickers are the same. Have they been able to determine approximately from what distance this kicker is reliable?

The same as with Zuerlein and possibly better. Zuerlein is 4 of 12 from 50-plus the last two years.

I am over it. He is a 77 percent field goal kicker. In the 6 games he has attempted a field he has missed a field goal in half of them. Not to mention an extra point.

I am over it and over him. We can do better than 77 percent.

guess what hes the kicker here for this season, hes only out likely one game.

If this kicker is perfect Sunday then time to get of rid of fassells pet project washed up kicker…

is this a pro sports team or a pop Warner team…jeesh.

I actually think in the vast majority of cases if there’s a penalty on an extra point you go for two
One yard for an extra one point is a very logical gamble most of the time

I'm surprised that he's not the 'starting' kicker somewhere. He seemed steady when he was on the team before and he had a solid career in the CFL.

We might be good with him then. He may replace Zuerlein. We'll see how he does.

Yes, I'll take a kicker that makes all kicks from 45 yards or less over one that has great range but is inconsistent even on the sub 40 yard kicks.

Me too. I find it interesting that Brett Maher holds the record for the longest Dallas Cowboy field goal (60 yards I think), but he was far from the best kicker this team ever had. That honor goes to Dan Bailey. There have been some other good ones as well -- Chris Boniol, Rafael Septien, I'm probably missing some.
