Statistically McCarthy needs to stay with the 'go for it' approach in order to come out ahead.I don’t think it changes much of anything with our current HC. McCarthy has a penchant of going for it on 4th down, exp when the FG distance is longer and 1st down yardage is short. And personally, I don’t have a problem with that.
That said, if a FG is necessary.. ideally you want the new kicker’s opportunities to be at the 40yd or less.. if it’s an “end-of-half” or “game” situation.. well, you don’t have much of a choice, you’ll just have to put your trust in the kicker like any other kicker.
- Statistical analysis shows that the aggressive approach is better over the course of a season but it can occasionally screw you in individual games.
